In the wake this week’s sweep of the European Film Awards by The Ghost Writer, Roman Polanski’s political thriller continues to regain traction from the slippery circumstances that seemed to be clouding its prospects earlier this year. The EFA doesn’t have categories for Best Supporting roles, so recognition for Olivia Williams’ brilliantly elusive performance was not among the honors handed down this weekend. That’s an oversight we hope to see rectified by SAG and a few critics awards this month to lay the foundation for an Oscar nomination. I spoke with Ms. Williams a couple of weeks ago about the film and learned a lot about Polanski’s demanding methods in the bargain.
NOTE: It would have been impossible to talk with Olivia Williams about the layers of this role without entering spoiler territory so please be prepared for plot details scattered throughout our 25-minute phone-chat. (playback panel below).
