Adapted from May Norton’s classic children’s adventure The Borrowers, Arriety is a Fairy Tale in the truest sense of the term. Hiromasa Yonebayashi directs for Studio Ghibli, home of Hayao Miyazaki. The UK version features the voices of Saorise Ronan, Olivia Coleman, Tom Holland and Mark Strong. The US release will have a Americanized voice cast including Bridgit Mendler, Will Arnett, Carol Burnett and Amy Poehler. (Twitch)
I’m not as excited to see this as I was for “Ponyo,” but I agree that a good Ghibli film is better than most animated features.

Oh, and when I say “bad reception from critics”, I exclude some of the most influent, like Peter Travers, Todd McCarthy, Lisa Schwarzbaum AND Roger Ebert.

Am I the only one that think that even with the bad reception from critics and some part of the audience, Cars 2 will still get a nomination?
It’s all about connections, and John Lasseter has got some.
(Nomination, not a win)

Love The Borrowers. The Littles was my favorite Saturday morning cartoon as a kid (well, that and the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon) and I dig Studio Ghibli. I’m down for it.

Can’t I just have subtitles? I like both casts of English-speaking actors, but I hate dubbing.
This doesn’t even look good to me. The animation looks like something out of a 1980’s kids’ show and the story has been told numerous times before. I want to know what is new about this telling before I invest any time watching it.

From what I understand, any foreign/independent movie has to open in the US within one year of its official release in another country. To qualify for this year it has to open in like a week or so. And next year it will be too late. It’s a shame really since it is a really great film.

Oh. yeah, I’d probably prefer the British cast to the American one. Maybe the DVD will have both.

Can’t we have the British cast instead? *pout*
Too bad it won’t get a US release until 2012. Pixar left the Oscar door wiiide open this year. I’m thinking it will end up being Aardman that reaps the benefits.

I saw it already. It’s pretty good.

technically, wouldn’t the cast be “Briticized” rather than Americanized? Just wonderin’.
I haven’t seen any of the non-Miyazaki Ghibli films. This one looks interesting, though.

I’ve never seen a Studio Ghibli film I don’t like. Spirited Away is my favourite film, Princess Mononoke comes close and I love many others. Can’t wait.

Arrietty should qualify in whatever year it is released. Tales from Earthsea did not because of copyright issues in the US with the TNT franchise that caused it to be delayed in its release for years, making it ineligible because it was released many years after its international release.

A good ghibli movie is worth five of pixars so-called masterpieces.

I dug the trailer a lot more than I expected. Will this qualify for the Animated Oscar though? Ghibli’s last film, Tales from Earthsea, did not qualify.
