The Ides of March takes place during the frantic last days before a heavily contested Ohio presidential primary, when an up-and-coming campaign press secretary (Ryan Gosling) finds himself involved in a political scandal that threatens to upend his candidate’s shot at the presidency.
Opens October 7th. (via The Film Stage)
1) Gosling plays different roles (see Crazy Stupid Love + Drive)
2) Edward Norton is an overrated actor. He’s good but he does nothing fascinating in his roles…his whole praise is based on the fact that he has had the opportunity to play some great characters. But he does nothing special with them
3) Brando was lightyears ahead of Dean and Mont… Now there are actors out who are just as good as Brando was…I believe Gosling is one of them. Tom Hardy. Robert Downey Jr. James McAvoy. Garfield. Actors have been exposed to better acting and as a result, they become better actors themselves.

First I think Gosling has the stuff. I think that if you want to compare “technique” then you need too look at the restrictions imposed upon Clift and Dean in the time they were making films. They couldn’t spend half their time on the screen screwing or running around ass naked. Their dialogue couldn’t be depicted with the street language that so defines a lot of our culture. And the truth be told Gosling is damn good but at the same time he may not be brooding but he’s always got that confused as hell thing going on. It’s almost sometimes like it’s a role reversal and Gosling is the female victim rather than the male protaganist. {sorry spelling probably off]. I think Edward Norton is a much better actor than Gosling but I don’t think Gosling has had the type of vehicles to showcase his talent. But I stick by that for their time Clift and Dean were pretty damn amazing. And using your theory then you’d have to say the Gosling was better than Brando who’s whole career was built on the brooding mumble.

The Believer
Half Nelson
Lars + Real Girl
Blue Valentine
No ONE needs to drag ANYTHING out of him. The range in those 4 perfs is staggering. And the upcoming work looks fascinating.

@Nic V…but don;t confuse quality of film with quality of acting…they do the same type of acting…naturalistic/brooding….but they don’t go beyond than…they don’t do anything extraordinary
with Gosling, every moment is surprising.

Clift and Dean overrated? I haven’t seen anything with Pattinson that even comes close to A Place in Sun or East of Eden.

Gosling is 20 times better than Monty and Dean…they were so overrated. Somebody like Pattinson is more on their level, that brooding teenage heartthrob.
Gosling is much more talented as far as acting goes

Gosling reminds me Montgomery Clift and James Dean. Yeah I’m old enough to remember them. He has that undercurrent that both Dean and Clift had. I’ve seen most of his work and I regard him as being quite talented. Last night I broke down and watched Blue Valentine. Interesting film but so disjointed that I really didn’t empathize much with either Williams or Gosling. Based on what I saw I think the Academy got it wrong and that Gosling should have gotten the nomination over Williams. The one thing I wonder about him is has grown as an actor. IMO that’s hard too tell. He still seems to be avoiding the mainstream which can be good but at the same time the characters he’s chosen seem too lack some really good writing. No doubt he’s got the looks and the talent I think as much as I really disliked Valentine that he was the best thing in it. Someone needs to take him by the hand and get him something that really would give him something to do. But then again his emotional level in Valentine wasn’t that much different than it was in The Notebook. It’ll be interesting to see him in Ides of March. I think Clooney might be the one too drag him out of it. I did see a clip of the Crazy Stupid Love and actually found that to be a little promising as he seems to have moved out of his comfort zone. He’s good. I just don’t think he’s found that role yet.
