American Film Institute just named Pedro Almodóvar as its Guest Artistic Director at AFI FEST 2011. AFI FEST — celebrating its 25th year in 2011 — will take place November 3 through 10 in Hollywood, California at the historic Chinese Theatre, the Chinese 6 Theatres, the Egyptian Theatre and the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.
First David Lynch last year and now Almodovar! Wow, spot on!
Almodovar is a fantastic and underrated auteur. Like other current masters like Lynch, Wes Anderson, Tarantino, and others you know distinctly that you are watching an Almodovar film by plopping yourself in for any 5 minute strech of any one of his fims. He creates his own Douglas Sirk/Fassbinder type melodramatic world. By my count, he’s made 10 “archivable” films already and i can’t wait for his next!
