The new trailer for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close just dropped – needless to say, it is as tear-inducing as the script I read.
Meanwhile, Kris Tapley at In Contention was emailed about a test screening for Extremely Loud, Incredibly Close – as such, no one has seen it. What Tapley sensed from the exchange was that Von Sydow could finally be up for an Oscar win for his work in the film.
As Tapley points out, Sydow has only been nominated, shockingly, once in 1989 for Pelle The Conquerer. Dustin Hoffman won for Rain Man instead. He’s never won an Oscar and is considered one of the greatest actors who ever lived. One role I think he should have been nominated for, that is comfortable enough for even Academy voters to notice, was his part in Hannah and Her Sisters as the artist, “I do not sell my work by the yard.” And “If Jesus came back and saw what was going on in his name, he’d never stop throwing up.” And you can see by the trailer that Sydow looks to be delivering a very heartfelt, interesting portrayal of the sad, wounded man in the movie.
This looks just as bland and emotionally manipulative as you would have expected coming from the man who made the atrocity that is The Reader. And using Where The Streets Have No Name is just a really lame, off-putting, derivative decision. Like the movie settles for being nothing more than a “Pay It Forward”-type of thing and not caring one bit.
Von Sydow, quite frankly, is my favorite actor of the 20th century, and I’m sure he delivers some real emotional punch, but it seems to me, that he kind of replicates his Diving Bell and Butterfly (oh, I’ve already forgotten the name of that movie?)-persona from a couple of seasons back?

The Year or Silence:
Best Actor nom for Dujardin in a silent performance. Ditto for Von Sydow. Maybe Berenice Bejo in supporting for The Artist…
Do you believe in a winning combo Dujardin-Von Sydow?

Oh, and I didn’t find the trailer at least to be all that tear jerking…and this is coming from someone who cries during a LOT of movies.

Um, that was weird. The monologue it starts off with makes it sound supernatural at first and then what’s this deal with the key? I dunno, not seeing Best Picture chances unless Tom Hanks has a very significant contribution. The kid is not going to be able to carry the film, not unless he’s like the next Haley Joel Osment.

I have watched this a few times and every time I get chills. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is my all time favorite book. The book makes me cry and I have read it twice. The book is so rich in emotions and is one of the most beautiful pieces of modern literature today. If the movie can go as deep with emotion as the book, and is well executed, then this movie will be a BIG Oscar contender. The music for the trailer is sorta cheesy, that is my only beef with it lol I have high expectations for this movie, being as I mentioned a huge fan of the book, and I hope it doesnt disappoint. I would love for my favorite book to be turned into one of my favorite things: AN OSCAR MOVIE!!
I also hope that Hanks, Sandra, and the boy all give great performances and get some recognition. Sandra looks like she gives a great performance, I would love to see her get nominated again…but this year she wont stand a chance of winning….just saying.

I’m a sucker for these kinds of movies. I do enjoy the way that Sandra delivers her lines, though. Her “I’m right here if you need me” is very honest-sounding. Hopefully she keeps that frank delivery throughout the piece.

It’s hard to say, but if United 93 had come out this year and not 2006, it probably would win big. The ending scene would have sealed up Best Picture & Director. It was five years later though, so many voters probably felt it was too soon. Hell, at least they nominated Greengrass for Best Director.
Daldry’s film, on the other hand, I’m not too sure about. It could be good, but it does feel like typical Oscar bait. We’ll see.

Don’t forget that nine-eleven is a slippery slope. No offense to Mr Daldry, but it takes real skill to navigate through that subject safely, especially when you are making a “feel-good” type movie. When revisiting painful and recent history events The Academy tends to go a little bit up the current (The Platoon, The Hurt Locker) and not just embrace the up-beat spirit of “moving on but remembering”. There are exepions where the pathos is so powerful and overflowing that there’s no way around it, but I don’t see this being the next “Schindler’s List”. On the other hand, I don’t see this being anywhere near “United 93” (even if the director is again a Brit) and IMHO that’s the type of approach towards painful memories that’ll score big time. I still wonder why didn’t “United 93” sweep, but I guess it was too soon.
I wouldn’t be so sure about the acting noms either. Von Sydov didn’t show much in the trailer, but he could pull a “James Coburn”. Anyway, the supporting actor is turning to be a “who’s more due” fest and I’m not sure I like that.
Bullock? Maybe, but only because supporting actress seems very weak at this point. Howeverm I don’t see her winning anything this year.
I think “h” has it right – this very well might bee this year’s “Pay It Forward” or in some respect “The Shipping News”, so don’t bet your beard on it.
Still, the trailer is AMAZING!!!

I think this could be either quite amazing and emotional or can see it missing the mark. I have a hunch it’s more in line of amazing and emotional and I am NOT a Bullock fan at all.

Acting nods for Bullock and Von Sydow will be normal. The rest is luck.

I want to be excited for this so badly, and the book is one of my favorites ever…but Thomas Horn looks atrocious. But I felt the same way about Max Records in Where the Wild Things Are, and that ended up being one of my favorite performances of that year, so I have hope.

3 facts:
The boy is very much looks like Billy Elliot.
I can almost see Stephen Daldry getting nominated.
The moment with those keys falling from the box is amazing!

Of course it’s just a trailer, but it looks a little bit overdone. I’ll certainly give it a chance. Perhaps it’s editing, but it appears that the boy is wearing a coat/heavy jacket on 9/11/11. I was here in the City that day and it was very warm. It’s probably just me nit-picking or it’s in his imagination. 😛

Sydow should indeed have been nominated for HANNAH, and for THE EXORCIST as well, IMO.

I think that this is the perfect Academy movie, and there is not discussion about it. They will love it. And yes it is manipulative but what can we do. I love Max Von Sydow so if he get an Oscar for this I am very happy. Sandra Bullock is as usual Sandra Bullock, so not interested.

I can´t say this trailer is bad. It is actually good. But as a fan of the book I think it looks too clean and cold. I miss this magic atmosphere. I think Spike Jonze would have been a great choice.
When the script is good then it will be nominated even if it separates the critics. Which I think will be the case.
The Academy won´t be able to resist Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock.

Just horrible, absolutely terrible looking sap-fest. The kid seems to be a horrendously annoying actor.

Looks good! And Daldry always delivers (especially with ‘The Reader’!), so the predictions may be correct. I hope that Thomas Horn can carry a movie, but then again, Jamie Bell made his debut in Billy Elliot and we know how that turned out…

This looks handcrafted for Oscars, I agree. And I hate it when movies like that win. But there’s always hope, people. Remember “Cinderella Man”.

I loved this book. But this looks awful. Maybe that’s why it looks awful though.
Also: it looks like Sandra Bullock is doing her best Julia Roberts in this trailer.

This will play really well with Oscar voters…could even see it racking up a lot of acting nods for Sandra Bullock, Max von Sydow, and even the kid (who they will obviously campaign in supporting because the Academy refuses to believe that a child can actually carry a film in lead).

Now suddenly I’m NOT feeling that bad about calling it No1 a few days ago even though there is still no official early word :

The Trailer goes for schmaltz and manipulation.
Quite unlike the movie that screened Monday, which is both restrained and idiosyncratic.
I guess that’s fine if it helps get people into the seats (9/11 movies so far have been a tough sell), but this film deserves a less generically button pushing trailer. I’d go as far as saying it falsifies some of the movie’s images the way it cherry picks, edits and rearranges them out of context.

You know, the accusations of “cheese”, “manipulation”, and “bait” are so automatic when a movie like this is announced that you start to wonder if it isn’t involuntary, like the people who attack movies like this seriously aren’t able to consider that a movie like this or “War Horse” could be sincere.

man, this looks like a serious tearjerker. i have a feeling this is the one this year- it could easily have mass appeal by the looks of it. looks much better than i expected
it depends on this kid. if this kid isn’t annoying it’ll be good

the Academy rejecting a: Stephen Daldry-Tom Hanks-Sandra Bullock combination? HAHAHAHAHAZ
not that I’m falling in love with either of them, but this has OSCAR written all over it

I just refuse to believe that Daldry would get 4/4 (directing jobs/Oscar nominations). No-one else could have done 3/3 even. This is not a real world we live in.
And… Billy Elliot was my favorite film of that year.

based on the trailer, the Academy will eat this up for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It’s got the star power in Hanks and Bullock. It’s got an A-list director and screenwriter attached to it. It’s dealing with an intense, tragic subject matter as seen through the eyes of a child who, by the looks of it, will be the heart and soul of the film and move audiences to tears. And according to the rumblings of Sasha and Tapley, it’s got the respected veteran actor who’s been long overdue throughout his entire career. The Academy will eat this stuff up like they always have, especially if critics and audiences rally behind it from the start.

Von Sydow don’t need no stinkin’ medals (or oscars). He’s one of the greats, period. I hope he lives to be 100.

Hmm, this trailer makes me feel the same way the book did…my heart kind of falls for it, until my head interrupts to tell me it’s wearyingly contrived.

I think it will be hard to beat this movie this year! Looks great, and Daldry is such a great director! Sandra Bullock also looks good in this. I predict this movie will play big in this next award season!

Oscar bait. Purest and simplest. The gutsy thing to do would be to send this manipulative POS to the sidelines. But they won’t.

If nothing else, Von Sydow should receive a special oscar simply for his contribution to movies on an international scale.
I’m reserving judgement on whether or not to see EL&IC, though. Could be great if handled well – or just extremely maudlin and incredibly opportunistic (hope not)

I can see why people would think this is too sappy, but I personally adore the book, and I think Daldry is great at getting the best out of his cast. I mean he has helped Kidman and Winslet win their Oscars. His films aren’t exactly best of the year material, but what one can expect from a Daldry film is a really special cast.
I’ve been really excited for this, and yes the trailer is a little cheesy and sappy, but how else would you promote it, really? You do what you can to get people in the seats, and like it or not, cheese and tears and a lot of Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks can probably do that. Lol.
Honestly though, I do think this could easily fall into commercial sappy film over an Oscar contender.

Whoops. Looks like we have a winner. D:
Sydow has only been nominated, shockingly, once in 1989 for Pelle The Conquerer. Dustin Hoffman won for Rain Man instead.
Cripes. Is that the worst luck ever or what?
Is there a static for movies that used U2 music? Because I feel like they usually don’t end up living up to their promise. Seriously. I feel like my brain is making a connection I can’t exactly remember.

One more movie to add to the “Movies to avoid this fall” list.
Now, If Von Sydow wins for this, I’ll have no choice but to watch it.
He’s like a nordic god with no medals to his honor. Criminal.

This one looks a little bland — and the schmaltz quotient may already be filled by War Horse. But right about Von Sydow — except his main competitor will be Plummer — equally great, equally deserving, and equally overlooked.

I’m not sure about this one. It doesn’t seem to have the acting muscle power of “The Reader”, nor the shrill high drama that made “The Hours” so imminently watchable. I know Stephen Daldry has a record to die for with AMPAS, but still.. this looks unconvincing.

Any hope of a Best Picture nomination for Harry Potter is officially dead with the release of this trailer. Sorry Jesus Alonso, but Potter vs. Eastwood and Daldry? It has ZERO shot getting past either of them.

Well, I’d vote for Von Sydow to have the oscar. Period. Just because he’s Von Sydow. Gotta say, though, this trailer didn’t really grab me for some reason. It looks like it could be a lovely movie. I think it will depend on the script. Granted, I haven’t read the book. Daldry has a lovely touch as a director, so who knows?

Isn’t he most famous for his Bergman collabs? The non-English-languageness of Bergman movies likely made it harder for him to get those noms.
The trailer is emotionally manipulative as expected. I was amused that it’s from the director of Billy Elliot & The Hours rather than The Reader when The Reader scored much bigger than Billy at the Oscars.
Will Bullock break dishes to ensure her 2nd nom?
