This has Best Actress in a leading role written all over the place.
I love the story, i love the woman, i love the actress.
Close, Davis, Olsen, Streep and Yeoh would be a perfect set of nominees.

I did see The Artist.
It was also very good. People still can’t believe that it didn’t win the audience award!

From the 30 films I saw at toronto, this one seemed the most “Best Picturey”. (In a good way).
The story is very compelling and moving, Yeoh and Thewlis are both excellent, and the production values (especially the cinematography) are quite good.
The film received at long standing ovation. Afterwards, several audiences members remarked to Besson and thanked him for both the depiction of the story and the casting choice of Yeoh.
Highly recommended!

I agree with pretty much everything Simon says (ohohohohoho). Michelle Yeoh was the perfect choice for this part. Unfortunately, the script just doesn’t give her enough to work with. I really can’t see a nomination happening for her.

Was Judi Dench nominated for Chocolat?? My good Lord, I must have a selective memory after all! For Chocolat?? An absurdity, if there ever was one.
But then again, The Dame gets nominated (or at least considered a strong option for a nomination) every time she is on screen in a Hollywood production! J Edgar is next in line, surely…
No, cannot say I’m too fond of her choice in roles…

Well, in Crouching Tiger she was kind of in the middle of Leading and Supporting (sharing the largest female role). It would’ve been a very tough choice, I wouldn’t call it a Lead. Well, she was not nominated for Supporting either, and that’s the category where Rinko Kikuchi was.
In the year of Crouching Tiger, I think they could’ve left her a place in Supporting… Judi Dench for Chocolat? Not so much.

Despite the fact that this film might not do too well critically (I anticipate mixed reviews), Michelle Yeoh was the perfect choice as the Aung San Suu Kyi. She is grace incarnate, and her face so wonderfully expressive. I have been a fan of her for years, but she has been sadly underused.
She is amazing to behold in Crouching Tiger but was shafted of any serious nominations (despite the Bafta). I would love to see an Asian actress nominated for Best Actress, but I just don’t see it happening 🙁

Incredible how much Michelle Yeoh seemingly embodies the calm, yet captivating, presence of Aung San Suu Kyi! Maybe this film is no good (Besson is not the safest of bets to deliver), but Yeoh’s gracefulness is haunting, nonetheless.
