Have to agree with Ryan here re: directors. They are the #1 reason I go to or look forward to a movie. A movie is the product of a director’s vision (barring any crazy studio interference, like Mr. Fincher had on Alien 3). Sure subject matter, great trailer, actor giving a great performance are reasons that get me into the theater. But when a Spielberg, Scorcese, Fincher, Nolan, Malick, Allen, Eastwood, Jackson, Scott, Soderbergh, Aronofsky, Boyle, etc etc, have a movie coming out — well then we perk up our ears because the director is the reason a movie works or doesn’t work, captivates or bores, moves us or leaves us cold.
As Sasha is so fond of saying, the director is the star of the show. When one of the greats has something new, we stand up and take note.

No doubt, Mara looks amazing in the trailers, she seems to have gotten herself lost in the character. Hope the movie turns out to be a success.

Anyone who says they don’t know why this film is being discussed here (at this point) is lying.

@Carl I too would really, really like to see that 8 minute thing (what was it? a very long trailer?) that was shown at Toronto and some other places. I have looked everywhere and it’s not on the net yet; so obviously Ryan must demand an exclusive.

Ryan, I think when you say “we” you mean “me”. You seem to be thinking about directors first and foremost. I don’t think all of us do. But if that’s what everyone else is going by, directors only, then you’ve answered my question.
ha, Antoinette — I didn’t delete my post — I just keep revising what I’m trying to say.
If I now sound less insistent, then it’s because you’re helping me refine my thoughts.
[no harm done, Chen. I’m in a cranky mood tonight. I can appreciate that you’re a fan of Michelle Williams and Sasha’s a fan of Fincher. I’m a fan of them both!
and I’m a fan of readers like you who have passionate opinions.]

That’s a terrific bid to draw in more viewers than just those “in the know.” It was a hugely successful book, but there are still millions upon millions of people who don’t know the story. Get ’em in the seats David! I can’t wait.

Yes, Ryan, and we KNOW for a fact that his next movie is going to suck! That’s the law of Woody. There is a strange beauty in that, come to think of it.

I didn’t say I couldn’t imagine it. I just actually don’t know WHY it’s in contention. But basing Oscar buzz solely on directors can’t be it. Woody Allen puts out a movie every year. He isn’t in contention every year. So I’m asking what apart from Fincher being the director is making it a contender. If he makes a movie about boogers and duct tape it’s not going to automatically be in contention is it?
I thought we were paying attention to The Descendants because of the golden boy Clooney AND that it got great buzz from Toronto(?), one of the festivals anyway.
J. Edgar. Yeah it’s Clint Eastwood, winner and nominee many times over. Leo, biggest movie star on the planet, multiple nominee, even twice in the same year a few years back, and someone considered to be one of the best actors of his generation. And it’s a bait-y biopic about a huge historical figure.
War Horse. Don’t even get me started.
Tree of Life. It’s been seen by many, firstly. So we know what real live people think. Then you have MALICK, PITT, and PENN. How many nominations and wins between them? And an Oscar bait-y meaning of life movie with dad issues in it?
David Fincher has been nominated a couple times. I don’t know the creepy girl from Adam. And Daniel Craig seems like a nice person. (I’d hate to think what the peepee tint did to those beautiful blue-green eyes though.)
Woody Allen puts out a movie every year. He isn’t in contention every year.
But don’t we always think Woody Allen might be a contender — until we see the movie and find out otherwise? Every year we have our fingers crossed for Woody’s comeback. This year we got it.
I thought we were paying attention to The Descendants golden boy Clooney AND that it got great buzz from Toronto(?) [Telluride]
not really. Because golden boy Clooney is not so golden all the time. He’s golden in about 25% of the movies he makes. I’ve been paying attention to The Descendants for 2 years, and it got my attention exclusively on the basis of Alexander Payne directing.
In fact, it got its premiere at Telluride on the basis of Payne directing. In fact, the only reason the movie got made at all is because Payne was directing.
Tree of Life. It’s been seen by many, firstly. So we know what real live people think.
Not the point, Antoinette. We all knew about Tree of Life 3 years ago, did we not? Haven’t we been anticipating it for 3 years? And why is that? Because a movie about ‘Trees’ and ‘Life’ sounds so awesome? No, we were excited and interested long before anyone had the slightest clue what it was about. Because we knew who was directing it.

The only downside to this movie (aside from the peripheral fire fight) is the fact that I have to wait 78 days to see it.
I haven’t read the books, but I’ll hold off on that temptation to see what Fincher gives us – and I can’t freakin wait! Mara is gonna shine.

Just ease up on the personal digs, Chen. I’ve let it slide for months. It’s not a horrible thing you’re doing, but it’s not necessary, so I wish we could quit having this friction.

Ha The Pope and Ryan, you both beat me to it!
I was going to mention Drive as a perfect example of how to get excited about a film because of its director. I doubt the film would be of any interest without his genius.
And regarding The Girl With Dragon Tattoo, I feel the same as the Pope. I love Fincher, have absolutely faith in him, I really like what we’ve been offered to see so far (and love even more Reznor’s tracks revealed), but unless they’ve made some major changes to the book (and especially its dreadful ending), I’m not sure Fincher’s talent won’t be wasted on pointless materials. But well even so, there will still be a terrific cast and Fincher’s visuals to enjoy.

I think this is fine as far as time constrained trailers go, but I think the first version was much more enthralling and just as audience friendly; it didn’t feel like four minutes at all.

You’re killing me. We still have what…like a 3 month wait? Damn. Looks like why I go to the movies. There is a slight geeky satisfaction seeing Fincher return to this kind of flick. I can’t quite describe it other than….its a Fincher flick.

Huge fan of Fincher, every faith it’s going to be great. My only reservation is the source material. Good, intriguing plot but the denouement was a let down. I hope that Fincher/Zaillian are able to improve it.

If I didn’t know David Fincher was the director, I’d pay as much attention to this a Dream House.
Sorry, Antoinette, I don’t understand this. How much attention would you pay to The Decendants, J Edgar, War Horse, Midnight in Paris, Tree of Life, if you didn’t know Payne, Eastwood, Spielberg, Allen, Malick were the directors?
More importantly, what would be interesting about Midnight in Paris if it hadn’t been directed by Woody Allen? What would Drive be worth had it been directed by Ratner instead Refn?
Who would’ve paid any attention to Gran Torino if Eastwood hadn’t directed it? I’m not really that much into Samurai either, but Kurosawa makes them essential to me.
Aren’t directors the primary reasons most of us the movies we do?
We might not be paying attention to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo if the director was a secret. But he’s not. Some of us know and admire him.
It’s ok that you don’t. But it’s odd that you can’t imagine why anybody else is excited.

It looks fantastic, at least to me. Fincher is a master at creating tension, and it seems like he has found his perfect composer in Reznor. I haven’t read the books, so I don’t know much about the story (and plan to keep it that way). But I love what I’m seeing in the trailers.

I don’t see what’s so great about this. I’m not a fan of saturating movies like he always does. But beyond that long standing gripe, I just see the type of person I don’t like running around with James Bond. What is it about this movie that’s making it a contender? The original film or the source material or just that it’s David Fincher? If I didn’t know David Fincher was the director, I’d pay as much attention to this a Dream House.

Ryan, I like reading the site but have never really commented. Small suggestion: could you try not to respond to comments so defensively? I don’t think this reader meant anything mean; Sasha is a big David Fincher fan! And it’s fine if she wants to champion Michelle Williams. When writers go on the attack in the comments section, it discourages me from commenting.
Reader,
Not really sure how anything I said to Chen is an attack. I’m pointing out that he/she is a vocal persistent Michelle Williams fan. That’s more like a compliment than an attack.
What useful purpose do you think Chen’s comment here serves? To me, it looks like an impatient dig: “yeah, yeah, we get it, Sasha, you love Fincher.” — and what prompted this reaction? Because Sasha posted a trailer?
Please don’t be discouraged. Leave the discouraged mood to me.
