We’re definitely talking a costume nod.

Having seen W.E., I must say I don’t know what the heck the critics have seen because W.E. is one of the better films this year. Also, I wouldn’t count out a cinematography nod (along with make-up, art direction, original score, supporting actress, costume design and sound mixing/editing), as the techs are simply top-notch.
The only problem with W.E. really relies on some of the editing. Some of it feels overdone. Also, the dialogue at times can be clunky (like on one of the clips that’s been posted online, we can clearly see the dialogue being all tacky and stuff). But otherwise, W.E. is really a fine film, with a great story, great performances and wonderful techs — I’ll even go as far as to say it’s got the most impressive and wonderful cinematography I’ve seen all year (if not, of all time).
Don’t believe me? Watch the film for yourselves and don’t be fooled by the critics who simply don’t like it because it’s directed by Madonna.

I heard from an acquaintance that saw it at the Chicago screening that it was very much like The Hours , thus the gloom and tone but filmed very much like A Single Man.
She said it was good but it is also an art house film and will be misunderstood.
I will see it just because of all the fuss and how it is “pleasing” to the eyes. Nothing wrong with that.

I saw a pre-Venice screening. The film (then) was neither a disaster nor a success, but a flawed movie that has some good moments, some off-putting ones, and ultimately doesn’t quite dig deep enough or quite fulfills its ambitions. The script is ultimately a let-down. But it was beautifully shot and edited and the costumes and music and Riseborough’s performance were excellent.
It could be said that the way the movie deals with the Nazi-sympathizer notoriety of W.E. – whether deserved or not – is rather too glib and dismissive.

I couldn’t even make it through the trailer and I love Abbie Cornish (Bright Star <3)– it just looks too angsty. The music and costumes did sound/look good though. I could be persuaded if I hear from others that it's not absolutely exhausting with the melodrama.
One thing about that music– the third piece is a little too similar to the Amelie piece. I wondered for a sec if they were the same…

@Chris
I feel the same way you do. It was almost like some did not want her to have any part of the industry. I believe it has flaws and most critics were fair but a lot of critics, based on Madonna’s past with film, were ready to unfairly criticize the film. I read where Weinstein loved the film and that has to say at least something. I believe he is, or has recut around 10 minutes to improve it before the BFI London Festival. Like one critic said, it is a beautiful well crafted film but the story is lacking in depth and I don’t know how much 10 minutes can improve a whole story. Hopefully the new editing can help somewhat so the very talented Andrea Riseborough can get some awards love.

I’m also skeptical of the criticism of this movie. The critics sounded overly preoccupied with the idea that the movie was directed by Madonna. Something about the bad reviews just came across like the critics had a personal problem with her and wanted to focus on attacking her rather than judging the movie the way they would a normal movie. I haven’t seen it so I don’t know if it’s any good, but it looks decent in the trailer.

Didn’t it receive mixed reviews? With every negative, there was a positive one.
Btw, this looks very beautiful. Reminds me also of the camera work in A Single Man.

I saw this a while back and though not a perfect film by any means, it is not the disaster that film fest critics declared it to be. I still think that Andrea Riseborough gives one of the best performances of the year in this. Still hoping for a supporting nod for her.

I’m sold on seeing this now. It looks stunningly filmed and I adore Riseborugh.

@ wisconsinkel
No, I wouldn’t. But no style of filmmaking which may work when employed by one director or to tell one story must necessarily work when employed under different circumstances. Douglas Sirk was a master of melodrama; I just don’t think Madonna is, from what I’ve thus far seen, as limited as that may be.

Looks really good and stylish! I bet it will be much better than what i´ve read!

@PaddyM, would you criticize Douglas Sirk then? He made a career of directing fabulous melodramas…

It actually looks all right. But if I remember correctly what the critics were saying after Venice, is that there was actually a potentially good film in there just lost in between unnecessary niceties, a contemporary story which didn’t really add anything, and above all quite a lot to be edited. And I can see exactly that in this trailer, something messy and rather ridiculously ambitious, but with some intriguing potential. In any case, it certainly looks better than any of the turds her ex-husband is making. There’s that. Now let’s just hope Weinstein trimmed it down and did a good re-editing job (as it was planned after Venice), and we might have a enjoyable film in the end.

I think, just by viewing this, that many critics prepared to stab W.E. because of Madonna. Many testers and festival viewers said they loved it based on some forums comments I’ve read.
The cinematography is stunning in this so called trailer, along with the art direction and costumes. The production value appears high quality.
Maybe Andrea Riseborugh will, after all, get some recognition.

Looks nice although a bit deluded (that obsession doesnt go with me).
Nevertheless the costume nod might be a fact. I would throw in one for makeup, even if it isnt as certain.
Looks better than critics say, although i wouldnt say better than other romantic period dramas.

@N The music from the trailer:
1 – W.E. – Abel Korzeniowski
2 – Amelie – Yann Tiersen
3 – W.E. – Abel Korzeniowski with/or Yann Tiersen (apparently)
This trailer was shown at a private screening at the Berlin Film Festival in february intended to sell the film to distributors. That is why the “in post production” is at the end and there is no Weinstein logo at the beginning. The official first trailer is yet to be released.

just figured it out, the 1st and 3rd piece are original to the movie by composer abel korzeniowski (who also did a single man)

@ Ryan B, we’re not hearing criticism in advance. We’re hearing criticism from people who have seen the film. A clip was posted here a few weeks ago, and even that clip drew negative reviews, and rightly so. Even this trailer looks heavy-handed and melodramatic.
I think Art Direction, Costume Design, Make-Up and Original Score are all definite possibilities, but nothing else.

Judging solely on the trailer, this looks deftly directed, as much or more so than Albert Nobbs. I think if the director’s name were not on it, we’d hear a lot less criticism in advance.

What is the piano piece in the background? It is so lovely!

Why did they trash this, again?
Looks very sensuous. Cinematography and Costume design look top notch. Reminded me of A Single Man.
Rather watch this than War Horse.

What I love about Madonna is that she always keeps on trying. She’ll get it right one day, she got it right with the “Ray of Light” album, one of the best albums ever!

Idk…to be honest I find the criticism about this film a little harsh. It looks promising based on this trailer. I think I’ll definitely check it out for myself and draw my own conclusions.
