Beautiful Angelina Jolie appear son 60 Minutes this Sunday to talk about her new film, which is quietly gaining buzz behind the scenes (thanks to Justjared):
Kris Tapley writes up an intensive piece on Méliès and Martin Scorsese’s Hugo. It’s a wonderfully informative bit of writing, a must-read for Hugo fans:
Naturally, then, it was a perfect fit for Scorsese’s film, which features an aged Méliès when he was a toy salesman (portrayed by Ben Kingsley), struggling to forget and move on from his life’s work as a filmmaker. “A Trip to the Moon” makes an appearance in the film at a key moment in the third act, but it’s not just any version of the film. It’s the colorized Technicolor restoration that Scorsese used, truly bringing the themes of his film full circle.
Méliès was a magician before he became a filmmaker. He brought that touch to his work behind the camera, and when you talk to people who have been inspired by that work, the word “magic” just seems to effortlessly come forth.
“Motion and emotion. They were, and are, at the core of cinema,” Scorsese writes in “The Hugo Movie Companion,” a handsome behind-the-scenes hardbound book that has been published in conjunction with the film. “And it was Georges Méliès who provided the final key: magic…He saw moving pictures as a way to enrich and enlarge his stage presentations. In so doing, he took the movies another giant step forward. The Lumières [who invented motion picture photography] gave us the world as we knew it, and Méliès gave it to us as we imagined and extended it, with imaginary voyages, disappearances, and transformations.”
Jeff Wells talks to A Dangerous Method’s David Cronenberg, “I still remember the intensity of that discussion and saying to myself as Cronenberg delivered his points, “Whoa, this guy doesn’t fool around…no digressions, no bullshit.”
Scott Feinberg digs into Best Original Score and the possibilities of newcomers breaking into the pack, “This year could prove to be a tipping point for things, with a number of established veterans each in the running for multiple scores opposite a number of very worthy newcomers.”

I would like Winger’s score from Take Shelter to get some notice. God, that still sends shivers down my spine when I listen to it.

Okay, I read the article. Apparently, Alexandre Desplat can be nominated twice. I am rooting for him to finally win. There was also a double nomination in the ’80’s. Jane Eyre’s original score was also magnificent. Mychael Danna for Moneyball should also be a strong contender.

I think it would be a wise decision to postpone In the Land of Blood and Honey to 2012. Squeezing it in 2011 will probably make it easier for some biased critics to dismiss it as well as it being shut out of the award race because it is just too competitive this year. I already heard buzz about it being possibly being postponed. It doesn’t have enough publicity. I know the media will be harsh and promote some fake controversy by twisting around words in interviews or repeating the same old accusations like they always do with then their movies are out. The release date is cluttered with a bunch of major studio releases at the same time. I seriously want this movie to perform well and I know the judging standards will be high. I have already heard strong early praise about the acting performances from one person who saw it. I know Graham King sometimes reads AD. Graham, show some sense and postpone it before it is too late! Please! I hate it when potentially good movies get tossed aside. There is still plenty of time to postpone it from its 12/23 date.
I definitely plan on watching Hugo and The Dangerous Method this weekend. Some people say Fassy might get the Oscar nod for that instead of Shame just because Cronenberg is a bigger name than Mcqueen.
I checked some past information about Original Score. John Williams has been frequently nominated for original score twice in the same year. I am assuming the rules have not changed and that composers can have multiple nominations in the same year? Does anybody know if that is correct? I think Alexandre Desplat might get double nominations for HPDH2 and The Tree of Life. We haven’t had double nominations for the same composer since the 1970’s. I wonder if Clint Eastwood will finally be Oscar- nominated as a composer for J.Edgar.
