Many really good films on this list, particularly The Descendants, Take Shelter, and Buck.
But for what it’s worth, Tree of Life is my best film of 2011; not everyone’s taste, I understand. But what I find really interesting is that Anne Hornaday gave 2 1/2 stars to Tree of Life, which was filmed by a director who’s work clearly influenced Kelly Reichardt. I didn’t dislike Meek’s Cutoff, but it’s baffling to me how Anne Hornaday can praise one movie so highly and dismiss another when both use images rather than words as their primary way of telling a story. Rotten Tomato reviews repeatedly say that there wouldn’t have been a Meek’s Cutoff without Terrence Malik.
Great! Love it! Nostalgia for the Light was my favourite film out of all of them last year – better than any narrative film from last year. It’s a stunning cinematic poem that just resonates in so many ways and so many directions – a film that makes grounded in the world and suddenly adrift in potential (and sorrow) at the same time. Glad to see Take Shelter and Meek’s Cutoff too.
Buck is a decent doc and all, but really top 10? Above Drive and Win Win?
seriously, meek’s cutoff on number one slot.. the only thing i took home with me from that film was michelle william’s reasonable performance because other than that literally nothing happens through out 1hr 45min movie, from start to finish.
where is TGWDT already……was it that bad?
After all this praise on almost every thread, I’m getting horny over Take Shelter. It’s funny to look at Groundhog Day now (it was that a couple years ago even).
Any Top Ten that includes Take Shelter is ok in my books.
Hmm, so Take Shelter has an 85 on Metacritic and 92 on RT (with an 8 avg) but only 76 from the BFCA…I guess that’s why?
Top 10-lists in general don´t make that much sense to me, cause they are really countless and most people won´t remember your list for longer than … let´s say five minutes (optimistically), but still – I´m happy about every film critic that appreciates the film “Beginners”!
There’s a movie I know nothing about. Buck. Should I care?
So why is this Take Shelter not being talked about? I’m not sure why but reading about it and seeing some images from the film it reminds me of Donnie Darko.
