Great story!
An example: I didn’t like Enter the Void THAT much when I first saw it. Now I’ve seen it many times. I love it.
The opening credits alone speak of high art:

Just watched the blu-ray today.
Sometimes
Divisive = great art.
I’m just trying to help un-brainwash you guys :p
I’m trying to caution you that you’re about to wear out your welcome.
Then you didn’t look at all of the links Tero. 2 Trash it, 2 Praise it. I figured I should at least present the other side to seem more objective…
BAHAH, this is pretty spot on as well-
“Pretentious, self-indulgent drivel; extended session of mental masturbation by the writer/director. Was on the verge of walking out half a dozen times, but morbid voyeurism and dwindling hopes of glimpsing a plot kept me in my seat. Never again will I waste my time and money on *any* film by Malick.”
The 6-minute trailer for Psycho is enough proof of that.
I’d be glad to be pretentious. I try to be. Teach me another word.
I looked at the links. They speak HIGHLY of the film. Even mentions that all great artists are pretentious, cause you can’t really be great without knowing that you are. Yay, Hitchcock is pretentious, too.
Though I give it a slightly better score then 1 out of 10
I think we get it that you don’t like The Tree of Life, Scott.
How about try to post one reminder per day instead of 10 times a day? We’d all appreciate it.
That endofpage article hits the nail right on the head. Couldn’t have said it better myself.
Why is that comment “awaiting moderation”?

A native English speaker should continue with you here.
What do you call a person who uses a word like ‘pretentious’?
What do you call a person who uses a word like ‘pretentious’?
Varies. In this case: tedious, obnoxious.
I’d have to say Tarantino is probably the most pretentious director around. (“ie I think this is my masterpiece”)
Right.
That’s all.
Well actually I suppose it’s not so much film(s) as it is just this one.
It means he’s makes films that “attempt to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed”
Scott, let me be more specific, cause it seems like you don’t know this.
Malick is one of the shyest people on Earth. If he was nominated for an Oscar, he couldn’t attend the show. He has been nominated, he didn’t show up. For years there were no new pictures of him online even.
I think it’s pretty far from having an ego of any kind. Pretentious or not. I actually hate the whole word ‘pretentious’. What the hell does that even mean?
@henry http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/01/11/idUS234495347220120111
OCO the critics know more than the public. The fans only vote in the people choice awards. For that reason, that awards or mtv is not considered as prestigious.
Malick’s ego?
Wow, you sure know much about the guy.
Wonder if Malick paid the critics off to inflate end of the year rankings and his pretentious ego.

http://criticstop10.com/
Try harder.
And it doesn’t even crack the Top 20 for the year on IMDB. Rightfully so :p
Except at only 84 percent approval its not
Tree of Life is the consensus best film, not A Separation. Pretty blatantly, actually.
I know foreign films rarely crack the Best Picture category but why is that Artist has all the buzz? Is it not possible A Seperation may also get in?
And it’s interesting that the critics and cinephile general public now agree on the Best Film of the Year. I may really have to see this A Seperation…
Ugh, that should have read the generally more discerning of the general public moviegoers also seems to believe the Potter finale is worthy. I mean it’s not just People’s Choice Awards or MTV Awards voters…
In regards to the cinematography in The Tree of Life, I agree that it’s one of the best of the year and I’m glad that it is winning awards from the critics.
However, it’s worth a reminder that the cinematographer (Emmanuel Lubezki) has been nominated four times previously and lost to Braveheart (A Little Princess), American Beauty (Sleepy Hollow), Memoirs of a Geisha (The New World), and Pan’s Labyrinth (Children of Men). I have a strong feeling that the members of the Academy will probably vote for The Artist or Hugo for Cinematography. Now I could be wrong about this prediction, but remember that this is the Academy that voted for The King’s Speech over The Social Network. I have a feeling that The Artist is going to pull off a “Slumdog Millionaire” sweep at the Oscars.
Either way Potter the (generally) more discerning of the public moviegoers seems to agree that the Potter finale should be a Top 10 contender.
Sort of OT: Is it just me or Michelle Williams is losing steam..?
I don’t understand that list though. I wonder if it’s out of date because going by the user ratings for 2011 films I get this…

Well, not necessarily and in theory what the public decides is what should matter most…however the critics can probably make more informed decisions due to greater availability for one thing.
But if there was some way to insure that average day folk who had enough passion for film to see all or most the top contenders in a given year then I’d be all for a public vote awards show being considered the most prestigious.
@Scott so ur saying that the critics make better film nominations than the public?
And whichever way you look at it, it’s hard to deny that Potter is not deserving of being a Top 10 contender. Of course, there will very likely not be 10 nominees this year, so ironically it is going to rest on whether or not there is enough of a fanbase in the AMPAS to secure the 5% needed.
I am however saying that if left up to the public to decide it’s difficult to acquire a fair and well educated voting sample, so it probably is best to leave it up to the “experts” and professionals as opposed to people who may not watch anything but blockbuster movies. I mean IMDB voters actually has a fair amount of credibility (or at least the sites system filters voting well) but think of the sort of people that you see on Leno’s Jaywalking or the show Street Smarts. Probably not the best bunch to decide on the best film of the year, lol. And yes, as someone else mentioned, awards like MTV are over-run with tweens and fans who vote stuff. That’s why Twilight always wins. They have a rabid fanbase and nobody cares enough to outvote them.
So no, I’m not saying that Deathly Hallows: Part 2 isn’t deserving, but most fans are not as well exposed to film and/or attempt to be objective. I admittedly don’t think I would even be fit to vote this year because there are a number of the contenders I’ve yet to see. Sure, I honestly do think the Potter finale is still the best I’ve seen so far but that is only because I’ve yet to see another film with a solid 1st, 2nd, and 3rd act and even as a Potter fan I have to admit that Potter’s 3rd act is a bit weak, in part because they deviated from the book. But the first 2 acts are so fantastic that it still comes out on top…for the time being.
“OCO300, pretty fucking ridiculous with the exception of POTTER, Moneyball, Crazy Stupid Love, and a few select others.”
No OCO, I didn’t say that at all. Do you have trouble understanding English?
Nate 😉 I lolled
But I’m a guy.
@Scott so your saying alot of public awards are really ignorant for nominating or voting for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part to be nominated or win Best Picture?
Lots of Tree of Life love from critics. Bravo!
@OCO
I hope so.
And I was using sarcasm, just in case anyone is interested.
OCO300, pretty fucking ridiculous with the exception of Potter, Moneyball, Crazy Stupid Love, and a few select others.
So carrying over my thoughts from the critics scores thread, I suppose we can’t really trust the ones funding movies to decide either…that would be like asking baseball fans to select the awards. And how do you control which fans vote? Well you can’t really…and so you can end up with a situation like the MTV awards where Twihards stuff the ballots. Plus a whole lot of other factors like people voting that have seen a very limited number of films. So while in theory it seems like asking the ones who are funding the films which are best it doesn’t exactly work in reality. Though IMDB seems to have done it fairly well. Perhaps they should use their algorithms to stymie bias with fan award voting.
@Nate are you talking about Paddy M.?
yeah, she’s definitely espousing her totalitarian beliefs on a movie website and not using hyperbole to make a point.
@Scott how ridiculous are the nominations for the People Choice Awards?
@Paddy M. so what do you mean people all over the world shouldn’t vote?!
cinematography is the only oscar tol should win.
I’m not convinced there is anything we could call consensus even among the critics/bloggers:
http://www.metacritic.com/feature/movie-critic-best-of-2011-top-ten-lists?tag=supplementary-nav;article;2
at least 26 different movies have been #1 on somebody’s top ten lists. 26 films! I’ve barely seen half that many movies this year! At least 26, that list only counts the top 30 point getters so there are probably at least 10 more movies that got at least one #1 spot from some critic or blogger. If a critics group has 10 members they very well may each have a different #1 and out of their top fives there might not be a single movie that is on everyones list. That’s nearly the definitive opposite of consensus.
Well, I get they aren’t random, but I mean you have critics from a bunch of different cities……seems random enough. I just have a hard time believing that out of thousands of people, there is little variation in their tastes.
Of course, the same group of people is probably being represented (middle-aged white male), so maybe that’s why.
But you guys have made good points about the balloting system and Joe Schmoe not seeing these types of movies. Still, I just wish there was more variety. Seems like as soon as there’s a “consensus”, everyone follows.
“I can has bulletproof vestsz”.
Why? Plummer was wonderful. I think Brooks is terribly overrated and hope that he won’t even get nominated.
Opinions, yeah.
Every time Christopher Plummer wins, I hear a cat getting shot.
Thanks for the heads up Ryan.
conflicting information, but I’m going by this:

because there’s an exclamation point!
but fauna, these aren’t random people, they are a pre-selected group based on an interest they all share
They’re busy watching the New Hampshire primary.
Where the hell are the ASC nominations?! It’s 9 PM ET…
ASC nominee announcement might not happen tonight. Although the ASC website says it was scheduled today, an ASC tweet today said tomorrow. Sasha spoke to someone at the ASC who said the 12th. Who knows.
“Pick 50 people at random from the streets and you’ll get tons of different answers. Seems more like groupthink to me and trying to predict the oscars.”
Yes and no. I mean groupthink is real so I won’t argue that. But at least, one would hope, the critics have seen all of the same films they are judging. Joe Shmoe who only saw Transformers, Hangover Part II, and Your Highness will surely pick a different favorite film than Sally Sue who saw Midnight in Paris, Bridesmaids, Footloose, and Lion King 3D. Neither of them saw Tree of Life of course.
they use some sort of ballot system. if the same 5 movies show up on only half the ballots there are your nominees. there doesn’t have to be remotely any consensus. (Except there are consensus top ten lists that some papers and mags and blogs do. that would be difficult, but still it’s only 5 people usually.)
speaking of which, did Ryan or Beth ever put up their top tens? (not that they’re consensus, that just reminded me.
Fauna there is no doubt that alot of groupthink operates. How could you, with such precision, predict most if not all of the top 10 BP nominations from thousands of voters?
I don’t care about critics groups anymore. I just have a hard time believing that so many different people can come up with the same 4 or 5 movies as “best film”. Pick 50 people at random from the streets and you’ll get tons of different answers. Seems more like groupthink to me and trying to predict the oscars.
Tree of Life reminded me in many ways of 2001: A Space Oddessy. The narrative is deliberately distant, forcing the viewer to think, and the story line isn’t linear – but is instead a series of quick snapshots (or moments) in the lives of the family. It’s the kind of filmmaking that turns off a lot of people, but I detect a cult following for this film in the future.
The PCA’s are as relevant as the MTV Movie Awards: both voted by tweens and teens on the internet.
Yay Meryl! Good for her.
And the PCAs are bullshit.
Um, while the people’s views obviously matter (would films even be made if people didn’t pay to see them?) there are some ridiculous nominees in some of those categories…
The Tree of Life has a good chance of getting a nomination in the Visual Effects category. Las year champion in this category also used traditional methods for visual effects. It is not only CGI what makes a picture a contender but also the creative minds at work.
The final choices came from fan voting, which exceeded 232 million online votes, per the PCA website.
Those People’s Choice nominations make me wish the people didn’t have a choice.
As some of you may know, tomorrow night is the 38th People’s Choice Awards on CBS. If you wish to make this a separate thread, Sasha and company, I haven’t requested such in a while. This is what the PCA’s came up with for their movie nominees:

As you see, Oscar contenders pepper the field. Will they succeed or be drowned out by the Harry Potter 7.2 tsunami (it’s up for 9 PCA’s; no Twilight: Breaking Dawn I in sight).
The Outsiders
Rules of the Game
El Topo
The Draughtmans Contract
Everyone is soo sure that Tree of Life, being the most beautiful and perhaps best shot film, will win just because of that. Trust me…I’ve had that feeling countless times over the years and have been disappointed each and every year (IE: The New World, Children of Men, Assassination of Jesse James, A Very Long Engagement, Hero, True Grit)
Remember what happened when Lubezki was winning left and right for Children of Men, a film much more accessible to the non-cinephile? Well, what do you imagine will happen to his Oscar chances for a film only the true cinephile snobs love?
just some great cinematography works that come to my mind:
Barry lindon
Doctor Zhivago
Mamma Roma
Fellini’s Casanova
American Beauty
The Tree of Life
Lawrence of Arabia
The Aviator
Manhattan
Benjamin Button
Brokeback Mountain
Wall e
L.A. Confidential
Drive
Titanic
Zodiac
Bullets over Broadway
North By Northwest
Rear window
The Piano
Shining
Last Tango in Paris
What about Troll 2?
Mattoc says: Also, check out Night of the Hunter.
Seen it.
I was wondering that. Thanks Scott.
Also, check out Night of the Hunter. It was made when filmmakers were afraid to leave he studio lot, but gorgeous nonetheless
Ok, well that’s the truth. The glasses tended to cause problems with unwanted light reflection so they had him wear frames without lenses and yes, do some post production to add them in at times. Also, in anyone wondered why Harry’s eyes in the films are not green it’s becaseu Dan was not able to wear the tinted contacts that were originally planned for use.
The Conformist – gorgeous cinematography. Assassination of Jesse James, also – and I loved that movie for obvious reasons. Almost anything by Deakins, Hall, Storaro, or Nykvist.
@Mattoc, I assumed you were talking about the lenses, lol.
I was joking about the glasses …that is HILARIOUS
Oh, I would remiss as a Hitchcock fan to not mention Shutter Island. I loved the look of that film and I think Richardson was snubbed of a nom.
Actually Dan wore glasses without lenses during filming.
“I would have thought the visuals would typically be somewhat underwhelming in foreign films due to lower budgets…”
Wrong. Movies cost millions here, too. Cinematography is not the most expensive part of filmmaking. You spend ridiculous amounts on actors, for example.
VE and Cinematography work hand in hand but are not the same thing.
Like in HP, Daniel’s glasses are done in post, while Brad is actually wearing his in TOL
How dare you to put Malick on the same spot that Hazanavicius!? HOW DARE YOU, DENVER!
Half kidding, actually. Good to see TOL picking some gold.
But I suppose that moreso affects VFX then it does cinematography.
I’ve noticed that Tero. So does that mean a significant amount of foreign films have great cinematography? I would have thought the visuals would typically be somewhat underwhelming in foreign films due to lower budgets…
Yeah, Deakins is one of the greatest. He’s in my top 3 of best cinematographers of all time.
Most great cinematographers come outside USA, and Hollywood knows this. They have known this at least since the early 70’s.
Oh, Road to Perdition is one I really need to add. Though Mendes obviously had a great deal of influence and has his own distinctive style cause when I saw it I didn’t know who the director was but while watching I thought, you know I wonder if this is directed by the same guy who made American Beauty…
I know it is not a popular opinion, but isn’t Shawshank a film you buy your dad for Father’s Day?
Kaminski just likes shining a light in my eyes – generally from a reflective surface.
Natural Born Killers was good. conformist, Leopard, Cries and whispers, Los Olvidados, Last of the Mohicans, Heat, Jack and Jill, etc…
Well Jesse James is a quite dreadfully dull, but it does look incredible. And no wonder, it’s Roger Deakins. Actually I probably could have filled half the list with Deakin’s films…
Scott, buddy, you have a lot to learn my friend, before you go off making grand sweeping statements like that. Take a deep breath. It’ll be all right.
The Assassination of Jesse James is one of the most blatantly Malick-inspired films ever made. It’s also incredible.
idk, I’ve always felt that Shawshank was a beautiful film overlooked in that category.
Have you seen Schindler’s List? That tops Saving Private Ryan even, but those are pretty much the only ones where Kaminski’s talent can really be seen.
Some of the titles (like Shawshank Redemption) hardly stand out in Cinematography. I will agree on these, though:
Citizen Kane
Days of Heaven
Raging Bull
Saving Private Ryan
Amelie
Children of Men
The Assasination of Jesse James
Scott – you are in thread where TOL won Best Picture. Do you feel dirty?
more like 3 years…
Yes, most of The Tree of Life effects are practical. And don’t we just love that? Cause you almost always can spot CGI. TToL is very organic.
Scott, we both have known for months that TToL’s chances for BP are not certain – it’s in the Top 10, but where?. Its Cinematography nomination is certain and it’s also easily the frontrunner to win. Only The Artist could spoil that there – if the movie sweeps completely (as some are expecting). So you will have the last laugh if it doesn’t win, or get nominated?
Scott, I do not mean this as an insult, but from reading your posts I am forced to deduce that you’ve been seriously interested in film for no more than three months.
hahahaha, Mattoc. Amazing.
and I feel bad this thread got hijacked and I certainly participated in that. to be continued when the ASCs come out . . . .
@ Jerry, I think clooney was very good but, while I think there might (maybe) have been a better ensemble out there, the ensemble as a whole was better than Clooney, specifically Woodley, but also Forster, Greer, and (surprising, but not really) Lillard. I did think it was weird that they listed Bridges on the SAG nomination, because I felt like there wasn’t anything wrong with his performance but he just kind of seemed like Beau Bridges. Idk. lol. Having second thoughts about a better ensemble now . . . hmmmmm
Malick is such a respected director that even dinosaurs come out of extinction to work with him…
Best Cinematography I’ve seen
Gone with the Wind
Citizen Kane
Casablanca
Rear Window
Days of Heaven
Raging Bull
The Shawshank Redemption
Saving Private Ryan
American Beauty
Gladiator
Lord of the Rings
Amelie
Children of Men
The Assasination of Jesse James
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
Inception
True Grit
Tree of Life would be lucky to make Top 100
Malick is one of the few directors who takes great pains to create a complete, natural environment that the audience, as well as the characters, inhabit for the duration of the film. Lighting and sound details (a breeze catching a curtain in a sunny window, the sound of kids playing outside, out of sight) don’t move the action along, which is a problem for some viewers who want “just the facts”, but these details are crucial to the full appreciation of his stories.
Like what good writing does on the page, Malick allows us to feel alive in the setting by giving us glimpses of the surroundings, feeding our senses so that we understand completely the atmosphere as experienced by the characters. This time, in Tree of Life, he was ballsy-bold with his canvas.
Bergman was good at this in some of his work, and Jan Troell did a masterful job in The Emigrants and The New Land (must be a Nordic thing!?), but Malick has raised the style to a full-on experience. There is no one you can compare him to.
the cellular stuff and the dinosaurs were probably cgi though i guess.
I definitely think the Cinematography award is the easiest to predict this year, it seems like the closest thing to a sure thing of all the awards.
also, I hope getting outed as a Tree of Life homer doesn’t color all of my commentary from now on.
It’s curious they picked ‘The Descendants’ for Best Ensemble but didn’t choose Clooney for Best Actor. TOL continues to be a hit with the critics and shut-out by the industry. Very sad, I think it deserves a shot at BP and director.
from wikipedia:
“Working with visual effects supervisor Dan Glass, Trumbull used a variety of materials for the creation of the universe sequence. “We worked with chemicals, paint, fluorescent dyes, smoke, liquids, CO2, flares, spin dishes, fluid dynamics, lighting and high speed photography to see how effective they might be,” said Trumbull. “It was a free-wheeling opportunity to explore, something that I have found extraordinarily hard to get in the movie business. Terry didn’t have any preconceived ideas of what something should look like. We did things like pour milk through a funnel into a narrow trough and shoot it with a high-speed camera and folded lens, lighting it carefully and using a frame rate that would give the right kind of flow characteristics to look cosmic, galactic, huge and epic.””
And this is exactly why I have a good feeling about Tree of Life for visual effect nom as well, there is a segment of the Effects branch that loves traditional effects.
Thanks Matthew D. I got that wrong then. That was my favourite part of the film one way or another.
The chances of TOL not being nominated for (and winning) Cinematography are as slim as any chances have ever been for anything ever.
By the way, most of the creation sequence was in fact NOT done with CGI.
Scott said: “nothing really stood out beyond what I already mentioned”
except also the things I mentioned. Those stood out.
you’ll have the last laugh if they don’t nominate it for BP?
Yay, Meryl Streep!
Sorry Scott. I had forgotten that your opinion is definitive.
Well I’ll have the last laugh if they don’t nominate it :p
Oh look, another critics group that appreciates great filmmaking.
And I legitimately laughed at “But I dread The Tree of Life winning…it’s just not deserving beyond the creation sequence, which could have very well been ripped from the Planet Earth documentaries or images from the Hubble telescope.”
GOODNESS.
The cinematography in The Tree of Life was stunning, Scott. You may not like the film but that’s not much reason to criticise its cinematography. The creation sequence was mostly CGI too, so your comment doesn’t make a lot of sense anyway.
I second the question, when to they announce?
Nate I’d agree with you if we’re talking about Days of Heaven, but not Tree of Life…nothing really stood about beyond what I already mentioned.
@Scott Couldn’t disagree more. The camera work in Malick’s films are always extraordinary. The way he uses light, the way he and his team decide what to capture, what not to capture, the elegance of the camera movement. The attention to detail he demands and the miles of film he uses to show the beauty and life of everything. The Camera work in his movies is itself a meditation about the world, and I know that sounds pretentious but think about it, one of the main things a director (and his cinematographer) show us with their films is what to look at. We walk through the world every day looking at the things we want to look at or happen to catch our eye. We walk into a Terrence Malick film and we look at what he (and his Cine) wants us to see, from the perspective he chooses and that is the commentary he provides. That’s the story he tells. And that is one way that film can operate as an art, and nobody does it better than Malick.
This list of winners seems off to me. Pitt’s the favorite it seems. He’s going to win everything because it’s payback time for the times he lost. It’s too bad he and Clooney won’t step aside for the younger talent.
More Tree of Life love. At this point I hope it doesn’t get nominated for PB because we’ll be talking about it for years.
I only saw Chastain in Tree of Life and I was impressed, but if she gets nominated, it wouldn’t be for that. I was very impressed by Woodley though.
Holding my breath for Fassbender.
I love the tie for director!
What time will the ASC nominees be announced? I’ve taken quite an interest in cinematography over the past few years (I think ever since I saw Casablanca and realized black and movies can actually look stellar, no color needed) but I dread The Tree of Life winning…it’s just not deserving beyond the creation sequence, which could have very well been ripped from the Planet Earth documentaries or images from the Hubble telescope.
