Will the trademark Bond theme woven into the orchestration interfere with the song’s eligibility? Depends entirely on the whims and vagaries of the music branch, so there’s no point even speculating. Best to wait and see. We’ve enough stress on our minds. Compare Adele’s voice to Shirley Bassey singing Diamonds Are Forever, after the cut.
1. A View to a Kill
2. Goldfinger
3. The World Is Not Enough
4. Live and Let Die
5. For Your Eyes Only
“See reflections on the waadah.”
There has to be so much drama in Bond theme songs.
Love the way Bassey belted out “Gold- fing-UH! He’s the man..the man with the MIII-das TOUCH…a spi-duh’s touch”
Still my favorite Bond film.
That’s true, haha. But it’s a very nostalgic track for me. In fact, I think it’s the first Bond film I ever saw. Goldfinger being the first I ever owned.
In a same way Adele does something like: Let the Skyfaw, when it crumbows…
@Tero Heikkinen: “For your eyes only”?!?!?
That’s the one only noteable for Sheena Easton’s inability to pronounce thw word “you” – “For your eyes only, only for yahwww….” 😉
1. We Have All the Time in the World
2. You Only Live Twice
3. Nobody Does It Better
4. Goldfinger
5. For Your Eyes Only.
1. Goldfinger, performed by Dame Shirley Bassey
2. Diamonds Are Forever, performed by Dame Shirley Bassey
3. Thunderball, performed by Herr Tom Jones
4. You Only Live Twice, performed by Miss Nancy Sinatra
5. Moonraker, performed by Dame Shirley Bassey
However this is super good, hope AMPAS noms it.
Its not the best bond song, but damn it gave me chills so it’s one of the best! Plus Adele’s voice is perfect for a bond theme!
Safina, the answer to your question is somewhere in this thread.
You’d think that the Bond themes would be nominated more often than they do based on the fact that they’re showcased so prominently, but the Academy always seems to ignore them. I think only three of them have ever been nominated and the last time was in 1981. As far as these themes go, this one was merely average, so I think it has an uphill race if it’s even eligible.
I have not heard that song. But I know Birdy from covering my favourite band’s great track called Comforting Sounds… by Mew. Too bad Mew are not world famous when they are more than world class. In America, pretty much only musicians and music enthusiasts (and critics) know Mew and they are huge in Northern Europe. A Danish band, btw.
And I found my boyfriend with this band – as he was a fan, too. So, Mew all the way!
Is Birdy’s Just a Game (from Hunger Games) eligible song? Because if any song should win, it’s definitely that one.
Natasha, I was thinking about the same thing. At the beginning I understand, she doesn’t want to belt out the song yet. But at the end, it still sounds like she’s singing a lounge version of the song, and she’s not going all out.
Great orchestration, but man, those lyrics are beyond awful!
The Best Bond Songs (Ever)
1. “Diamonds are Forever” Shirley Bassey (1972)
2. “You Only Live Twice” Nancy Sinatra (1967)
3. “Goldfinger” Shirley Bassey (1965)
4. “Nobody Does It Better” Carly Simon (1977)
5. “Live and Let Die” Paul Mc Cartney and Wings (1973)
Unless the rules have changed (and with this category who can keep track) the Taylor Swift song (with the Civil Wars) will not be eligible since it was the second song they played over the closing credits.
The first song played was the Arcade Fire song mentioned previously. As far as I can recall none of the songs from the Hunger Games soundtrack were actually played during the movie (it’s a shame the Kid Kudi song wasn’t, that’s a very good driving bass beat in it) so only the one song is eligible.
Knowing that Adele singing live will bring in the under 21 crowd that the Academy hunger games for.
The Academy ceremony needs good source material to really work. Last year, the films didn’t provide them with great source material although they did a fine job as a whole with what they had. But a great job only when they have great source material. Meryl Streep was the biggest responsible for the surprisingly not-bad ratings in my opinion.
This year it looks like the films will bring great source material to the ceremony. If they can make someone like Adele to sing, it would be fantastic. I remember in 1999 we had Aerosmith, Mariah Carrey, Whitney Houston and Celine Dion singing. In 2001, Sting and Bob Dylan. In 2002, Paul McCartney, Sting, Faith Hill and Enya. The Best Original Song category can really bring great entertainment to the ceremony. And there’s always some great songs in films every year.
Song’s nice, but it doesn’t have that kinda kick that some of the bond songs had. And IMHO you don’t have to look far, Another Way To Die had that kick.
On another note – can’t wait to see the title sequence.
Bassey slayed it…. Adele merely cut it !!!!
Does anyone know if Thomas Nemwan is involved in this song? Also, song’s brilliant. I totally love it.
Sorry but I think Adele is HIGHLY OVERRATED ! She shouldn’t even be compared to Dame Shirley Bassey who is a legend !
Paddy M:
I’m glad that you pointed out the song from “Snow White and Huntsman” by Florence and the Machine. It deserves a Best Song nomination.
I’m also hoping this film will get some AMPAS recognition in January (technical nods most deservedly for cinematography, costume design, production design and music score).
She plays it really safe with her voice in the higher registers until the VERY end when she belts out a note or two. I wonder if this choice was affected by her voice surgery or she would have sung that song that way regardless–even if there had never been an issue with her vocal cords. I do think it’s a terrific song regardless–I was just anticipating the vocal style that dominates both her full-length studio album releases.
I thought I read something on Kris Tapley’s site that makes this song ineligible. The song incorporates Monty Norman’s Dr. No theme, so wouldn’t that make the song not nominated? I am crossing my fingers since I love the song.
Brilliant. I get more excited as more things get released around this film. The song will be a classic Bond song.
This is one of a number of good songs I’ve heard in films this year. This category could be crowded with stars – Florence and the Machine’s song from Snow White and the Huntsman, Taylor Swift’s song from The Hunger Games (is it eligible?), Kylie Minogue’s song from Holy Motors (I’d love this to be nominated) and now this.
It’ll have a decent shot at a nomination under the new rules should it be eligible – I think it will be. Not sure if enough branch members will have even seen Holy Motors, but Who Were We is one of the best original songs I’ve heard in a while, and not just at the cinema.
I’ve been so tired of hearing Adele for the last while. Seems like she’s the most covered, most over played singer out there.
But then this comes and reminds me of WHY she is so overplayed. Her voice is so beautiful and unique. I am all about this. I heard it yesterday and I’ve listened quite a few times.
I believe that the song will be ineligible as there are portions of the song that are not written directly for this movie, but here’s hoping the music branch sees that their own rules are ludicrous.
Best original song should be between this and Hunger Games’ Abraham’s Daughter by Arcade Fire. Adele scores again 🙂
Shirley Bassey rules! I just love her voice. She should have been nominated for performing “Goldfinger” back in the 60s. They even fucked up back then (well, even more so actually).
I like the new Adele song. Hope it’s nominated this year. Nice work. So far, it’s the only song I’ve heard that’s worth nominating this year. Well, perhaps one of the Whitney Houston numbers from “Sparkle” will undoubtedly make it into the top 5.
I think it is a brilliant work: rich orchestration, breathtaking voice, thought-provoking lyrics. Worthy to be a Bond song.
That’s the first time I’ve heard any of it. I’m a little disappointed actually. I thought for sure with Adele and a Bond theme it would sound much more powerful than that. That’s more “Goldeneye” than “Goldfinger”, which is what I was expecting when I heard they got Adele. There’s no fury to it either. Even “Diamonds Are Forever” had more umph than that. If I just randomly heard it on the radio, I don’t think I’d have realized it was a Bond theme and I’ve only missed one or Bond movies (Brosnan ones). So it shouldn’t have a qualification problem but still.
What a bummer.
First – Happy 50th, Mr Bond! Dr No was released in theatres Oct 5th, 1962.
Much as I despise this category, I can’t see this song not being nominated (unless there’s a hidden Bond theme motif – haven’t heard the whole thing). Stupid rule.
I think the song is brilliant. And I just want to see Adele perform at the Oscars.
