Jonathan Teplitzky directs The Railway Man from a script by Frank Cottrell Boyce (Millions) and first-time writer Andy Paterson, based on a memoir by Eric Lomax. Along with thousands of other British soldiers captured by the Japanese during the Second World War, Lomax (Colin Firth) was forced to work on the construction of the Thailand- Burma Railway, the so-called Death Railway. When a secret radio he had built was discovered, he was brutally tortured by a Japanese officer. With paralyzing flashbacks and dreams crippling his relationship with his wife (Nicole Kidman), he decides to seek revenge on his torturer.
After watching the trailer, I feel as though I’ve seen the whole film (same with the trailer for Saving Mr. Banks).
No pun intended. Re this particular trailer only, with virtually all positive comments about how intriguing the teaser looks, I am most likely to be in minority here.
Here’s the deal.
The trailer itself looks all right to me – not great in particular, just formulaic and all right.
#BUT# I love Nicole Kidman’s past performances [YELLING: TO DIE FOR (though her lead role in Els, er, I mean, The Other is overrated as far as the Oscar goes)], and I trust Colin Firth because he’s always made fascinating thesp efforts. So, this combo in, I’m sold — for this reason as opposed to the trailer itself.
PLUS: They did cast Japanese or Japanese British/American/Australian actors — the latter if any — for some relatively meaningful roles instead of the thesps of Chinese or Korean descent [no offens/ce]. This would pay well, I promise – since, matter-of-factly speaking, some Japanese elements, including gesticulations, are peculiar to Japanese people.
intrigued and initially impressed. it could go all the way. it certainly has the potential story-wise and amazing actors.
Anytime I see Nicole I get happy
Looks great
Looks like healthy good bait. Something to watch for next year.
TWC would be a perfect place for it, I mean if wwe films bought this it would lose all credibility
Last I heard TWC made an offer, it would be perfect for them next year, after all Harvey was behind both Kidman’s and Firth’s victorious Oscar campaigns, so there is definitely history there !
Chances are who ever purchases this probably won’t release it til 2014 I heard believe it or not that wwe films has interest in purchasing this movie WTF!!!!!
looks good!!!! nicole kidman for best suppoting actresss!!! the academy owes her after the paperboy snub!!
I’m bought. Look forward to seeing it,
John
It doesn’t have a domestic distributor yet
I’m intrigued. Love Firth. Love Kidman. Like the subject matter.
However, this seems like it might do more in a less competetive year.
Is it 2013 or 14?
