Best Scene
– A favorite movie scene or sequence
12 Years a Slave – The hanging scene
Captain Phillips – The scene near the end of the film where Tom Hanks is being checked out by military medical personnel and he breaks down.

Her – Off-screen OS sex scene
The Place Beyond the Pines – The opening scene where Ryan Gosling is walking through the carnival.
Harrison Ford!
Her without Oscar nomination ? http://tiny.pl/qrzgd
The opening scene where Ryan Gosling is walking through the carnival.
A required element for any Gosling film.
Amy Adams is getting attention, so it looks like six contenders for the five slots for Actress.
Christian Bale gets notice, might challenge Hanks for a spot in Actor.
So far, no love for Bradley Cooper, too bad, he ‘s great, but Leto is a clear frontrunner, and the nominations aren’t set yet.
I haven’t seen “Her” – how is Joaquin? The movie is getting great results, he isn’t.
Much as I love movie awards and lists, I am compelled to ask:
— do we really need critics “awards” for every city in North America?
— how many film critics are there in St. Louis?
— do we really need nominations, preceding the award? it’s not the Oscars. Can’t they just give out the awards to their chosen winners?
Sorry to pick on St. Louis. Insert almost any city in its place.
Thanks Manuel!
You’re more confident than I am, Sammy, about 12YRS Oscar chances. Although I do think it’ll receive multiple nominations, I fear that Academy members – popping in their screeners while sitting comfortably on their couches – will want to look away.
Dern does some nice work in Nebraska – some of his moments remind me of Jeff Bridges’ quieter moments in Crazy Heart.
Alexww, while I think Ford did a decent job I was more impressed with the character than the acting. I can’t help but shake my head, he basically grumbled and growled and (if memory serves) was the only character who never really went through a change. He was the savior at the start and a savior at the finish. No conflict. he put everyone in their place and that was that. I may be a bit more harsh than I mean to be because I liked the film and the character…but Oscar consideration just makes it look more ridiculous to me.
Re: Detriot
STANLEY TUCCI – THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE
JAMES FRANCO – SPRING BREAKERS
Wow, good for them!
Pierre – Dern is no surprise for me. He was my favorite for this awards season three months ago after winning Cannes but as you see 12YRS is a big contender and favorite to win BP and ultimately Ejiofor has got the upper hand.
NO: Blanchett, Chiwetel, McQueen
No Blanchett but Blue Jasmine ensemble nomination

THE UNKNOWN KNOWN
I can’t help but chuckle every time I see Harrison Fords name come up for what is easily the campiest acting i’ve seen in years. I can’t believe he’s even being considered. The movie, while entertaining, was so fluffy and sugar coated it made it hard to take seriously. Ford’s character was so over the top and ridiculous it’s nuts that he may edge out other actors for a spot in SA.
Okay wow so Her is most definitely a contender. Damn. I was looking forward to it, but it doesn’t look like it’s coming to my local art house theater any time soon.
Neto – there must be a tie.
It’s interesting to see that Bruce Dern’s name is popping up as frequently on these lists – if not moreso – than Robert Redford. I’d have thought it would be the other way around.
And no matter what happens to 12 Years a Slave on Oscar night, the film keeps getting multiple mentions across the board, much moreso than The Butler – which I consider a good thing.
Why “Best Actress” is the only acting category with 6 nominations?
you might have disliked it more than I did.
Question is
Is Greengrass on shaky ground? Is he -now- fighting for that 5th slot or this is all irrelevant and he’s still at #3?
Cuaron and McQueen are locks. David O. Russell is looking stronger. Scorsese seems like a contender, especially after AMPAS get to see WOLF. Spike Jonze is looking more like he could grab that Malick/Haneke spot.
Alfonso Cuaron
Steve McQueen
David O. Russell
Martin Scorsese
Joel & Ethan Coen
Skpike Jonze
All looking better than Greengrass, but maybe not. When I saw CAPTAIN PHILLIPS I didn’t like it but I sure thought was AMPAS-friendly.
Tom Hanks and a bunch of seamen get threatened by pirates in tank tops and shorts pointing big guns at them. Y’all know what I thought of that film!
No Oprah Winfrey in supporting actress. That’s right!!
lmao that daaaaamn was for Paddy
^^^Daaaaaamn! Just when Captain Phillips thought he was safe…
Saint Louis loved HUSTLE!
did they see WOLF?
I missed the scene where a bunch of army boys checked out Tom Hanks at the end of Captain Phillips. Was it before or after he got tied up and splattered in the face?
