Before we write our DGA preview (some time this evening) – here is a quickie contest to see how well you can predict the Directors Guild nominations. They will likely be different from the Oscar nominations, since the DGA announce on January 6 and Oscar ballots have to be turned in by January 7. Not really enough time to rally around a consensus. The DGA will likely pick the more popular directors where the Academy might go for the more artistically daring. Although they might match up as they always have. Who knows. Either way, do your worst.
Contest after the cut.

Mine is pretty ngng, but it’s not totally out there…
I think McQueen, Russell, and Cuaron are locks for both. DGA will also go for Greengrass and Scorsese; AMPAS will go for Jonze and probably Greengrass too, but maybe Payne.

The DGA is a conservative body so they will follow the general trend.

I’d be surprised (and disappointed in the DGA) if Payne makes it in. I’m thinking it’ll most likely be Greengrass, but I’m hoping that they’ll go with Jonze. However, my more serious alternate pick would be the Coen Bros.

Major Threats : Paul Greengrass, Spike Jonze
Viable Surprises : Woody Allen, Jean-Marc Vallée
The only other contender I could see sneak in the BD race at the Oscars is Stephen Frears but he’ll need the British-vote and that could easily go collectively to McQueen. I guess the BAFTA nods on Wednesday will show whether Frears has the British-support or not.
