‘The Great Gatsby’ losing is a shock. I still expect it to win production design and costume design Oscars though.
I’m sure all of the “this is not a precursor” people will come out of the woodwork on this one….but this augurs well OVERALL for 12YAS….and I’m talking BP. Everything seems to be aligning.
@Marcus Perriello
The NAACP Image Awards go back quite some time…..I’m not sure of the individual history of the “movie” award
Blue Jasmine should be a Best Costume Design Oscar nominee. It is amazing how great the gowns and outfits reflect the story. Why the academy thinks only period films deserve recognition is beyond me. The costume design branch needs to either split this into Contemporary/Period or have a mass meeting to discuss their way of thinking. The last contemporary film to get a nod for costumes was The Devil Wears Prada. Blue Jasmine should have made the cut this year.
And why are people shocked 12 Years a Slave won over Great Gatsby? Gatsby is a horrible film, the costumes are not revolutionary or new. Is it because the have the most glitter on them? Or that Baz Lurhman got Moulin Rouge! to win this in 2001. Words fail me.
Scott, it is writers like you that add greatly to my appreciation of cinema and storytelling. My initial reax to BJ getting the contemporary was WTF? But your thoughts on how it was the costumiers worked to effect in Blue Jasmine was very insightful. Thank you.
I’m so pleased with Blue Jasmine’s win.
The costuming not only played to both sides of Jasmine’s life, it became a player in the narrative. With each scene you could track how may times she wore the same garment, perhaps styled differently to appear new, on her way toward the inevitable discovery.
It became a mock drinking game last time I watched – take a shot every time she wears the gold wedge flats. It seems trivial, but think of how Jasmine slipped on the same pair of shoes for every date of hers. The silent humiliation she would have felt, going from the lifestyle of labels and luxury to praying that her style conscious beau wouldn’t catch on.
To me, that’s when costuming achieves greatness.
Anyway, winning costumes. A good sign for 12YAS.
Robert, I think he meant first time awarding movies.
“I didn’t know the NAACP was into movie awards. I suppose every organization has to find something to pursue. Was this the first time the NAACP has been doing this, or has it been a while?”
Last night’s ceremony was the 45th year for the Image Awards.
Wow. Nice surprise for 12 Slaves! Well deserved win for The Hunger Games.

Reminder the Image Awards were awarded last night.

(Is Lupita wearing more and more makeup these days?)
SallyinChicago, thanks!
I’m a little surprises ‘The Great Gatsby’ didn’t win this one. But it’s all good. ’12 Years a Slave’ has a great period look about it and I’m all for it winning for Best Production Design and/or Best Costume Design. I’m a little disappointed that ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ didn’t get a Production Design nomination, though. For me, that movie would have been the Best Production Design winner this year.
