For the first time ever, we have ten winners in our Oscar contest. I have to say that these are probably collectively the highest scores in this contest in 15 years. It probably has to do with Gravity dominating many of the usually harder to guess awards. These readers missed only ONE category, listed below:
Vince Chan – missed only animated short.
Bob Tormey – missed only Best Picture.
Calvin Cousin – missed only animated short.
Juan Pablo Aragon – missed only documentary.
Corey Hart – missed only animated short.
Sefa Emekli – missed only animated short.
Abby Brown – missed only documentary.
Marco Santos – missed only doc short.
Robert Butler – missed only makeup.
Chris Schleicher – missed only animated short.
Winners of this (or any contest) contact awardsdaily@gmail.com for prize info.
After the cut, those who only missed two!

American Hustle really WAS the Gangs of NY of this year (that said, I think Gangs is much, much better than AH). In that ….
Both went 0 for 10.
And both got as many noms as it did based partly if not mostly on the pedigree of the filmmakers and cast. They both struck important nom buzz at a critical part of the race, as well.
Gangs had big pre-release buzz, Scorsese, a superb cast, an AMAZING crew, and of course … Harvey. Bingo!!!! 10 Noms. Plus, while the reviews certainly were not glowing, they were not bad, either.
Hustle had ORussell on a hot streak, a cast on a hot streak, a crew on a hot streak, that flashy trailer, buzz, the perfect release date. Bingo!!!!
But I think voters realized after the dust settled that neither of these films were Oscar-winning caliber. And both films were released in STRONG years. Now, I still believe that Gangs deserved wins in a couple of categories. But the fact remains, voters came to their senses after the gush of nomination love and thought, eek, maybe all those noms/potential wins should not have happened,
So yeah, to me, the 2 films’ trajectories were very similar.
I KNEW I should have gone with 20 Feet From Stardom for doc. KNEW it! But I foolishly chose the best documentary of the year to win Best Documentary, which is just a rookie mistake. And then I figured they would throw American Hustle a bone with Costume Design. Also paid the price for that one.
“HA! Llewyn’s cat crashed the Oscars.”
steve50,
shows what I know. I thought it was Garfield. Ulysses does make more sense. 🙂
Maybe. Or is it the cat from the opening credits of Bertolucci’s Spider’s Stratagem. (00:01:15)
Ryan, I’m right there with you for art direction, I thought of Lincoln instead of going with my gut for Great Gatsby. I thought to myself, “They have to throw a wild card.” I even called Gatsby before the award was given but I was hoping for 12 Years. Also in doc feature, I picked Act of Killing when my initial gut was 20 Feet from Stardom thinking, “The Academy likes it’s crowd pleasers, maybe this time they’ll actually give it to one of the best of the year.” Nope! And and finally I originally picked Gravity for editing, knowing full well the editing was actually trickier but then changed it to Captain Phillips because the Academy can generally go for the more traditional, thrilling work. So if I had stayed with my gut and not tried to be too clever, I would’ve gone 23/24. Animated short, that was always a toss up. I never get those right.
Kane,
I made the rookie mistake of thinking the Academy at large is as discerning at the Guilds, so I used the Guild victories to bolster my vacillation.
Which gives lie to the refrain that Academy voters are sheep who can only make a choice by following Guild guidance.
How did Marshall do? 🙂
I got almost all the big awards right except for original screenplay in the wrong belief that American Hustle couldn’t possibly leave with nothing. Should have gone with my “heart” choice instead. So I’m happy ‘Her’ won.
The same for ‘Captain Phillips’. Thought editing was its only chance. Shouldn’t have underestimated ‘Gravity”.
HA! Llewyn’s cat crashed the Oscars.
Yeah, I did the usual 11th hour panic and ran around like chicken little seeing American Hustle behind every corner. Typical idiot.
From now on, I lock my predictions in January.
My panic involved a misguided attempt to help 12 Years accumulate extra Oscars besides one for BP. (Just in case disaster struck Lupita or John Ridley). So I went against my own personal pick of Gastby for Art Direction. Gave that to 12 Years (thinking of Lincoln).
I didn’t have Hustle down for nuthin.
Best lesson I learned from American Hustle was that American Hustle is a scam.
If not for that last-minute betrayal of my true belief I would’ve been 21/24.
I had Act of Killing for doc, Capt Phil for editing, and Voorman for live short, but at least I believed in those.
FIX!!
Dont be silly Paddy. No proof of a fix.
However it is proof of something else: WITCHES!
‘American Hustle’ is only the second film to win Sag Ensemble and then get shut out at the Oscars. ‘The Birdcage’ was the first. But ‘The Birdcage’ got just one Oscar nominations unlike the 10 for ‘American Hustle’.
However ‘American Hustle’ is the first film to win three Baftas, three Golden Globes, Sag Ensemble and three Critics Choice Awards and then get completely shut out at the Oscars. Even ‘Apollo 13’ got two tech Oscar awards.
Well done to the Oscar prediction champs.
Can we know what their prediction was in the category they missed? Especially the ones that missed documentary… Juan Pablo Aragon and Abby Brown.
Vince Chan – missed only animated short. – probably Get a Horse
Bob Tormey – missed only Best Picture. – probably Gravity
Calvin Cousin – missed only animated short. – probably Get a Horse
Juan Pablo Aragon – missed only documentary. – curious to know which one?
Corey Hart – missed only animated short. – probably Get a Horse
Sefa Emekli – missed only animated short. – probably Get a Horse
Abby Brown – missed only documentary. – curious to know which one?
Marco Santos – missed only doc short. – wow! Which one??
Robert Butler – missed only makeup. – probably Grandpa
Chris Schleicher – missed only animated short. – probably Get a Horse
One last comment before signing out.

(For now, before you click on this thread, there’s one CP (group) photo with Bradley [sp] Cooper and an angry cat — lol — riding on his head, Ellen D. et al.)
LOL . . . . Since Garfield the cat is supposed to be more obese and I’m sure this feline being is not the one from Inside Llewyn Davis, I wonder where he/she is from . . . . Nice photo bomb though, Meow lol . . . .
BUT the real top prize for the photo bomb, well, in my book, goes to Kevin Spacey [sp] . . . Technically, with hyperbole effect included, Spacey, if not counting Lupita’s brother (?), is a bit out of place here in a sense.
Love this photo. Especially with JLaw in. : )
I hate to break the subject here, but there was something that bothered me all night from your previous post. Someone posed the question
was why was Will Smith presenting the Best Picture award, saying it should be someone like Jack Nicholson and the retort was because he was black. Could it be that Mr. Smith is one
of the biggest box office stars, or that he is a two-time Oscar nominee.
It’s things like this that the race card has to be played.
Congrats, winners! It surely feels great to know you have your fingers on the pulse of the Academy. 🙂
Congrats to all of the winners who have won it fair and square, meeting the deadline and without any relation with #the firm only in the way that could have created unfair advantages. [J. Wells have already put it well in one of his threads on his site.]
I was insensible enough to assume that Hustle (one of my favorites) would have prevailed in certain categories and so, dearly paid for it.
Robert Butler, how on earth could you miss makeup?
Oh to have been the person who only missed makeup!
I changed my mind on a number of my predictions at the last minute. I actually divided my list into two categories: who I thought would win (head), and whom I wanted to win (heart). For my “head” list, I did the best I’ve ever done: 20/24, or 83%. It would have been higher if I’d gone with my original instincts in three categories (Sound mixing, film, and actor–I thought for sure there was going to be an upset for the latter in particular). For my “heart” list, I got what I usually get: 12/24, or 50%. I guess if I ever want to win a prize in the future, I’m gonna have to choose my head over my heart.
Congrats to everyone:)
Congrats to all the winners, even after the ugliness of this season, I tip my hat to you 🙂
