Sasha Stone has been around the Oscar scene since 1999. Almost everything on this website is her fault.

I’d love to work with that dude… I bet no one has ever said that to him before!
I wouldn’t be even slightly surprised should Kirk Baxter win a third Oscar for Gone Girl.

Me either, Paddy. Look at the history of Editing Oscars and count all the nominations and wins for movies that have tricky flashback structures or parallel cross-cutting from more than one POV.
Gone Girl has both: layered flashbacks and cross-cuts. And yet never for one instant are we ever unsure where we are in time, thanks to the strict but elegant grammar of Kirk Baxter’s editing. (aided and abetted by very subtle variations in color palette and soundscape tonalities, a distinctly different look and aural environment has been created for each of the various sets of “chapters”)
People who try say Gone Girl is simple or looks ordinary have no idea what a complex juggling act this was. That it appears to be “simple” is a tribute to the filmmakers’ dexterity. On every level.
What a goldmine! Thank you for the link, Sasha.
