One thing you might not know about Chazelle, which I didn’t know, is that he’s a Harvard grad, which is neither here nor there except when he talks about this opening shot you can tell he knows a thing or two.

Whiplash is my favorite movie of the year. The theater was warm but I swear I was so tense by the ending that I was sweating just from watching. Also I woke up the next day feeling like I could play the drums. Great flick! (Also loved Birdman, Nightcrawler and Boyhood)
Can’t view the video 🙁 Can hear it though. It makes sense even in that context, and I’ll take through what I’ve heard here into the film when I get a chance to see it. It’s showing here at LFF but I won’t catch it during my stay.
So, Whiplash is now in theaters as of yesterday, but not playing in my neck of the woods. Two words come to ming: “Fuck Me!”
it’s the best film I’ve seen all year. even better than “Boyhood”.
it simultaneously kills me and fills me with hope that this was made by someone my age.
I seriously cannot recommend this enough to everyone here.
I just came back from seeing whiplash and I have never been more riveted than I was during that movie. I really hope this is one that explodes due to word of mouth because it is truly a masterpiece of filmmaking that captures the horror and ecstasy of pursuing an artistic career and being subjected to the pressure and scrutiny of some subjective “authority.”
It deserves attention at every level, especially the two main performances. I can’t see j.k not winning for this
I would very much like Ayer to “pull a Peckinpah”, but in all honesty, the only man who could “pull a Peckinpah” is Peckinpah. Today there is no room for a balls-out fuck-the-system movies like Peckinpah used to make in the ’70. There is no such director in the game today, who could rattle the cage hard enough to make the right people cringe.
Jordan, I don’t doubt they were. They’re two of my most anticipated! I was lamenting not being able to see WHIPLASH sooner.
Kane, Peckinpah: director of “problematic” films.
“Pulled a Peckinpah”…interesting way of putting it.
@ Bryce: Coincidentally Whiplash and Nightcrawler were the two best American movies i saw at TIFF, by a long shot.
In addition, I might have to postpone or just add a second viewing of FURY for the 31st and make it an entire day from hell at the cinema. Looks like Ayer just pulled a Peckinpah. Critics are having a really violent reaction against it and I’m loving it. *Now* I can’t wait, mouthwatering stuff.
Bryce, between Whiplash, Nightcrawler and Gone Girl that would be a hell of a date night!
Just found out I’m not seeing this until October 31st — just flipping brilliant.
Should at least be a lovely Halloween double with NIGHTCRAWLER.
yup, I’m hooked.
