I’d like to make a few remarks: I’ve just seen Birdman, Foxcatcher, Inherent Vice and Selma. Foxcatcher and Selma would make formidable Best Picture winners; so would Boyhood, of course. Birdman is good, it’s fine, if it wins. I had a lot of fun watching it. But it’s not in the same league. Selma is so powerful, vibrant and electrifying, thank godness it’s not a biopic. Inherent Vice was so crazy and I didn’t really understand what it was about, but the atmosphere that Anderson created and the acting were magnificent
Regarding your discussion about Snowden, I think you didn’t do justice to him and its courage in the short amount of time you talked about him. It’s important to know what we know thanks to his revelations. Governments don’t need to collect data like crazy without any reason.
I feel like I could come around to the idea that I’ll be more happy with a film getting nominated for Best Picture, but not winning, more than if it wins. Like the point that Craig made about him thinking Birdman can take the backlash, but Boyhood might not be able to. That is a really great point by the way.
But the other thing though with that is that it’s not so hard to see my favorite film lose to another film I like, but it’s really hard to see it lose to a film I don’t like.
