Thierry Fremaux can’t ban selfies. He’s just accepted yet another one from Nanni Moretti.
Are we supposed to be happy that there are two films by women in main selection? Just two? Fremaux will never learn because he will never care. Have some more Paolo Sorrentino wankery!
Aaaaaand for yet more Italian auteur hatery, I refer to both Youth and The Tale of Tales as two among five English-language films in the main competition by directors whose first language is not English. Yawn.
kk I’ll get over it, cos The Assassin! Also, Saul Fia promises to be exceptional, though don’t so many unknown titles at Cannes before they end up to be as mediocre as a lot of their immediate competitors? Never mind, Emily Blunt and Naomi Watts ought to be on the red carpet, so I’ve got no complaints.
Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Frémeaux said on Canal Plus the selection was finalized last night depending on which films were already or almost finished. There could be a couple additions, though we don’t know if that would affect the official competitive selection.
He also said selfies would be banned from official occasions because it is disrupting, distasteful and very unoriginal.
Thrilled to see on the slate:
– The Lobster (what if it’s the best film of the year?!)
– Sicario (Blunt and Villeneuve getting their due!)
– The Sea of Trees (I think it sounds wonderful and I’m one of the few not “so over” McConaughey yet; I just hope the cinematography is as great as it should be)
– Carol (*cough* it’s a great, great film *cough*)
– Youth (I feel like the trailer already won the Palme?)
Disappointed to not see on the slate:
– The Last Face (I believe in Sean as a director, but I’m not a huge fan of Charlize, but I am a huge fan of Adele, but the story sounds basic, but it could still be great. Basically I needed it to be at Cannes so I can figure out if I care about it or not)
– Beasts of No Nation (Really wanted Cannes to endorse Netflix because I’m afraid no one else will)
– By the Sea (is it done? I want it to be done. I want to see what Berger has done with Jolie direction)
@JIM
Un Certain Regard is a separate prize for more younger, new artists. They wanted to recognize innovation. And amen to that.

Amazing!
Certainly one of the best since I started paying attention, Steve.

Not to kill the atmosphere, but I was really hoping to see Icon or Midnight Special here.
Can someone clarify for me–I’ve never really understood the difference between the main competition and Un Certain Regard. Any light shed would be wonderful!
Too bad, no Schneider vs. Bax by Alex van Warmerdam. His previous films are great, like his nominated film Borgman in 2013.
massively impressive lineup.
even more amazing is that these are not the names of people who usually disappoint. here’s hoping they’re all as great as they seem!
This lineup is so exciting I might be heading to Cannes to check it out!
What an awesome list. Also excited about Woody’s new movie at Cannes. Hopefully it will be a good one.
Half of my top ten last year (Foxcatcher, Leviathan, Wild Tales, Mommy, Force Majeure) and my best actress (Two Days One Night) began at Cannes so I’m looking forward to this year’s films.
I have wet myself so many times this last couple of hours. Sorry to bring down the tone.
^ a TRUE and bloody story that is!
I have no idea who these people are… MacBeth all the way though!!! Fassbender and Cotillard walking up the stairs!
Marguerite and Julien by Valérie Donzelli sounds good too, it’s a story of incest and adultery among 16th-century noble youth. The project was started by François Truffaut in the 70’s but he scraped it because he somehow found it “too relevant” in those times of sexual liberation.
I’m in the same frame of mind as Bryce – has to be the best line-up in years, if not ever.
Ugh sorry for all the typos. Ecstatic and on my phone.
No news yet on Directors Frontbight/Critics’ Week?
Audiard, Haynes, Van Sant, Sorrentino, Villeneuve, Lanthimos plus Macbeth? With Mad Max for dessert? What a banquet this year!
The Audiard, Koreeda, Haynes, Sorrentino, Garrone, Zhang-me, Kurzel, Lantinos, Van Sant, Villeneuve and, omg, Trier appear delectable on paper. With Moretti the only eyesore of the line-up. Bravo!
Hou Hsiao Hsien’s THE ASSASIN…um, holy shit!!!!
New Jia, Koreeda, Hou, and Haynes has me so pumped. Plus a fascinating-sounding film from someone who apparently studied under Bela Tarr? Wonderful. Gotta say, though, the festival is WAY too English language-heavy this year. Eight out of seventeen is a bit much, yeah? Hopefully the 1-3 films that will inevitably be added on in the coming days will even it out a little.
When are we going to learn who’s on the jury though? I feel like we had that information before the selection was announced last year, but I could be wrong…
New Lanthimos has me hyped! meet me over at hashtag The Lobster.
