We got our first glimpse of Johnny Depp as Whitey Bulger in Black Mass. Today we get our first look at the trailer. The Oscar nominated actor is almost unrecognizable with combed back blonde hair and blue eyes in his portrayal of Bulger.
The film is to be released on September 18 and stars, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dakota Johnson, Juno Temple, Corey Stoll, Joel Edgerton, Jesse Plemons, Peter Sarsgaard and Kevin Bacon. Based on the true story of the gangster, Bulger was found guilty in 2014 on 31 counts, that included 11 murders. He was sentenced to two life terms.

This trailer is more interesting than David O. Russell’s entire filmography.
“we’re all gonna be apologizing to Bryce when David O Russel and Todd Haynes tie for Best Director and both win Oscars 10 months from now.”
Also to be known as the day climate change instantly reverses and hell freezes over.
I see you guys are good for a chuckle at my expense. You may carry on.
But first, omg.
CHRIEG CHRIEG CHRIEG CHRIEG CHRIEG CHRIEG CHRIEG CHRIEG CHRIEG just kicked the living shit out of me last night and I’m literally still gasping for air. A most capricious yet not so nimble coming of age yarn that comes down to a *nearly* textual desperate call to the forces of impermanence, inherent vice, murphy’s law or “something’s gotta give” to end his (their?) over-privileged boredom (I know! Central Europe! who would have though?) and protest the unyielding Swiss familial structure** by way of sadistic — and somehow ethereal — disintegration. I don’t know. I haven’t slept, but *had* to share.

**Any Swiss reader please correct me if I’m wrong about this.
Joy is suddenly the frontrunner? Ew.
we’re all gonna be apologizing to Bryce when David O Russel and Todd Haynes tie for Best Director and both win Oscars 10 months from now.
That is so sad 🙁 RIP, Richard.
Richard Corliss just died.

Wow. That is definitely one of the best trailers I’ve seen for a movie in a while. I’m hoping Cooper nails this.
p.s. Uhh…I hadn’t really paid proper attention to that UCR line-up and just went over it and holy shit.
How about a Cannes trip giveaway, Awards Daly?
I wholeheartedly recommend Un Certain Regard winner AFTER LUCIA. Basically Haneke does telenovela posh coming of age — very precise. Tim Roth (president of Regard when the film won the section) must have been so impressed with its formidable composure he must have asked the guy to put him in his next movie and voila. If anything the line-up now looks to have veered way too heavily toward the home team’s favor (France).
Edit button for when?
@Bryce: the weirdest thing about the recent Cannes announcement wasn’t who got in (I’m familiar with neither director), but who got sent off to UCR: Mendoza, Kawase, Weerasethakul! Not to mention Gaspar Noe’s been punted to the midnight screening. Between Arnaud + Gomes going to Director’s Fortnight and this recent development, I hope some of the lesser-known players in comp this year are real diamonds, for Thierry’s sake.
If you’re interested check out the terrific French trailer for the new Desplechin (It’s Cannes-bound!)

By the way the competition line-up has been rounded up; not with the names many were hoping for but I’m just as promising to me, most especially Michel Franco’s follow-up to AFTER LUCIA.
I think this looks good. I love Depp in gangster movies like Donnie Brasco and even Public Enemies.
Ok. I lied. I said I was going to ignore this year’s Oscar race, but then I saw this trailer. I’m going all in for Johnny Depp right now and intend to push if I can help in anyway. Because in my opinion, he’s overdue. And he’s a goddamn American that’s why. I’m sick of this British bullshit. Don’t get me wrong I have many favorite British actors but the way the Brits vote in a block like it’s some football match cannot stand. So I’m going to get all patriotic myself.
JOHNNY DEPP FOR BEST ACTOR
Done and done.
Ok. I lied. I said I was going to ignore this year’s Oscar race…
um, none of us ever believed you anyway. wb
For the record, I liked Public Enemies, and even Johnny Depp in it. He plays gangster well.
“Now I’m going out to start the car and suck on the tailpipe.”
Hahaha!!! Steve, you’re such a poet. 🙂
I should put together a book of sayings you’ve said.
First thought when I read the headline, “Watch: Johnny Depp….” was “do I really have to?” Then I see David O Russell and the word “frontrunner” together (again). Now I’m going out to start the car and suck on the tailpipe.
It was either this or talk about the 3D in ADIEU AU LANGAGE on that other thread. If I could only relive it.
I’m not ready to declare anything anything yet. I will declare though that this trailer looks awesome, and I really want to see this come September.
Johnny Depp’s eyes were insane!
I think this conversation turned more serious than I was meaning when I first said JOY was our frontrunner. I was just (overly?) playfully passing along the noise I’m hearing. Obviously, I’m not ready yet for final predictions, guys.
[save this conversation]
i know, …probably partly my fault, things took a dark turn when I threatened to strangle you.
(I meant PLAYFULLY strangle)
Oh Ryan, I’m just having a little fun talking Oscars when perhaps I shouldn’t be because we’re dreading them right now. “Entertainment journalists” is an obscenity nearly everytime and everywhere that it is used; not just in Vegas. I’ve reconsidered my position and we probably should wait and actually see the film before deciding if it’s going to win Best Picture and Best Actress. But it’s likely to be Bradley Cooper’s year. He’s kind of due and all those SNIPER goodwill remnants — seriously.
it’s not really wrong to say someone is a frontrunner when they are the first and thus far only runner out of the gate
🙂
we would all do well to remember the time Anne Hathway won an Oscar before Les Miserables even started filming
btw fuck johnny depp and fuck this fucking trailer apparently.
haha
Listen, I like DOR and JLaw a lot, actually. My reaction has nothing to do with them. I can’t wait for the movie. I’m just pointing out that it’s hilarious you’re basing all this on 60 seconds of footage. Will it be nominated for some Oscars? Probably. But declaring something a frontrunner in APRIL is not helpful.
Well I’ve heard good things. And no I was talking to Jordan.
we’re just having some fun, Bryce. honestly, thank you for the news and thank you for the balance.
please believe me, I want JOY to be good, because I want ALL movies to be good. why would I not?
You seem to be blinded by other prejudices which are by now too easy to spot on this most beloved forum. It is clear from all these entertainment journalists’ reactions that it’s not only a most welcome departure of tone for O. Russell but a touchstone performance from Jennifer Lawrence. I’d be careful letting my irrational dislike for these two artists get the better of my judgment (and manners!) while clearly in the presence of an awards juggernaut of the likes of JOY. Just take a step back, deep breath and see things for what they are and not by what you want them to be.
I’d be careful letting my irrational dislike for these two artists
hope you’re not talking to me, because I like Jennifer Lawrence
what I’ve heard is that a quick montage of dialogue-free shots from JOY was shown that lasted a few seconds, so those must have been some devilishly impressive facial expressions in order for 15 seconds of silent film to catapult Ms Lawrence to frontrunner status.
i’m obviously missing seeing the sources that have you excited, Bryce, so can you link us or give us some quotes?
hold on, give me a sec to stop wincing about ‘entertainment journalists’ in Vegas. …. ok. I’m ready
🙂
Ryan, Joy will probably end up with 4 acting nominations and will win best picture. Let it take over you…convert…
ok, but leave me alone for now, I’m trying to prepare for my first scientology audit
YES! Johnny Deep to the Oscar! I’m totally in…i think this is gong to be huge because i liked Crazy Heart and i didn’t understand why Out Of The Furnace didn’t have more recognization so i trust in Cooper. One thing is for sure: even if Deep won’t get nominated, this is a total comeback and finally he’s not a cartoon…
Lol, I never said you said that. You’re the one who needs to calm down with proclaiming it the frontrunner after one minute of footage was shown. Those journalists at CinemaCon say every movie looks great and like an Oscar contender. Trailers are made to make films look good… wait till the movie is actually shown till you make outlandish statements like that.
I meant frontrunner for Best Picture, Director, and Actress — I never said it was going to sweep. You need simmer down though.
I’m glad to let JOY be frontrunner this week so we can get it over with.
I do miss the simple trailers with a genuine idea like this one here. Movie looks great so far, but I fear it might share the fait of “Out of the Furnace”. And Johnny Depp does a great Nicholson (bordering on a caricature).
Hey it looks like THE MARTIAN and THE REVENANT impressed as well; actually even more so than JOY, like, way more. I know most of these bloggers aren’t to be trusted — but I’m excited.
But…
…I know know, here’s the trailer for that Cannes opener led by Catherine Deneuve. It looks cute and MOMMYesque*!
http://www.premiere.fr/Cinema/News-Cinema/Video/Decouvrez-le-trailer-de-La-Tete-haute-le-film-d-ouverture-du-festival-de-Cannes-2015-4169156
*in that it’s in French and about some troubled blonde kid and there’s a female protagonist
So one minute of footage is shown to journalists who have said they’ve loved everything they’ve been shown so far, and you say it’s our frontrunner? Keep trying.
David O. Russell’s JOY tease is making jaws drop at Cinemacon. The footage left entertainment professionals elated. That’s all I know. Probably our frontrunner. #theacademyawards
Probably our frontrunner.
please don’t make me strangle you.
