We saw the images and we roughly know the plot. Here is the trailer for a film that looks straight out of the 1970s — in Ken Russell territory. Will it be well received or universally panned? We will wait and see but one thing we can know for sure is that writer/director/star Angelina Jolie does not shy away from scenes of hitting and slapping and slapping and hitting… hat tip to Rope of Silicon.
Calm down everyone. Just because she’s beautiful, smart, articulate, and comes from an immense background of privilege doesn’t mean you gotta hate. We feign intellectual superiority when we watch Jurrasic World, but decry an intellectual woman for not subserving to the more masculine subserving films we claim we despise. Jesus people, get yourselves together!
I listened for months as people anticipated The Land of Blood & Honey. Then it came out and I never even saw it.
I fell for the hype about Unbroken being a sure fire Oscar hit, but by the time it was finally released the reviews made it sound so boring that I didn’t ever get around to seeing it, even with 3 technical nods.
I’m not falling for it again. I’m putting By The Sea firmly in my “probably can’t be bothered” pile, unless and until the reviews prove otherwise.
“Funny how we still treat women in Hollywood at this day and age.”
is not sexism, is only because unbroken was a flop of critics and awards.
I knew if we gave her enough time she’d get slappy.
I had to admit to myself recently that I’m just not a fan of Brad Pitt anymore. It’s weird because he used to be my most favorite of all. Even objectively though, this doesn’t look interesting. It reminds me of that fake Italian movie in the Woody Allen movie. lol But this isn’t supposed to be funny.
Jolie messed up as a director. So just stop directing films because you suck and you don’t have a right to redeem yourself and you will never make it right. Funny how we still treat women in Hollywood at this day and age.
“I wonder where all the hate are coming from? ”
because jolie/director
“But sorry, di Caprio obviosly is a much better acool than Pitt.”
i prefer pitt, dicaprio is overrated
…yep, this is doing nothing for me.
I guess I’m sorta happy that Jolie is getting more directing work and I wish her the best with that, but Unbroken was a mess that wasted a lot of talent in front of and behind the camera.
I don’t think its being a hater just because some people think this movie looks terrible. When I first saw it, I burst out laughing. Angelina Jolie seems like a pretentious and snobby person. Brad Pitt seems pretty cool, but I just can’t stand Angelina Jolie. I think she is a little too eager to get a directing Oscar. Just saying. I saw Unbroken and boy did she mess it up badly. I have zero hope for this movie.

If this trailer and the movie could be converted to black-and-white (as Benutty and I wish it were) the pacing, tone, and heightened level of ostentatious ambition would make this first teaser feel virtually indistinguishable from the original 1960 US trailer for L’Avventura.

This can be no accident. And while it’s true, one (hopeful) man’s ostentatious ambition is another (jaded) man’s pretentious snobbery, I happen to be the kind of guy who’d rather see a filmmaker unafraid to be overtly ambitious than to face another drab awards season where all the Oscar pegs have been carefully rounded off to fit neatly into the Academy’s lazyass holes.
Go right ahead and say By The Sea looks like “La-di-dAvventura” but you’ll owe me a royalty fee because I thought of it first, and anyway most people won’t even get the affectionate joke.
Looking forward to this. Even if I have issues with Unbroken, I actually commend Jolie for writing this alone this time around. And for pursuing this, seems like a passion project to me and that’s very rare these days in Hollywood.
I wonder where all the hate are coming from? It’s just a short trailer and people are very easy to push this to the mud? Come on!
And btw, I thought Jolie deserved it more than Winslet on the year she won her Oscar. And this is coming from someone who thought The Reader deserved that BP nomination over The Dark Knight. But sorry, di Caprio obviosly is a much better acool than Pitt.
To me – this looks AMAZING!
Jumped to top of my list
“Seems like there are attempting copying Leo and Kate. Trying to pull a Revolutionary Road. Only difference is Leo and Kate are far superior actors than Brad and Angelina.”
no, the real important difference is sam mandes is far superior director than angelina..
and for me pitt is a better actor than leonardo overacting dicaprio.
“Leo and Kate do have talent. The Brange don’t. They became A listers because of a affair.”
this is not true and pitt filmography is phenomenal
All the haters can stfu. Even if this is terrible, it’ll still be brilliant. Mommie Dearest / Grace of Monaco type brilliant. Misunderstood brilliant. Camp brilliant.
Hater = confused fan
Looks like a total vanity project to me.
“Leo and Kate do have talent. The Brange don’t. They became A listers because of a affair.”
1. The comparison is completely unnecessary.
2. “The Brange” had been acclaimed actors long before the affair : Jolie was an Oscar winner, Pitt was an Oscar nominee.
3. “The Brange” had been A listers long before the affair : (Tomb Raider, Ocean’s Franchise, Interview with the Vampire, Legends of the Fall, Se7en, Troy, Gone in 60 Seconds).
@ dave
Leo and Kate do have talent. The Brange don’t. They became A listers because of a affair. Leo and Kate never needed a romance like that in order to make their careers.
This movie looks god-awful. Even worse then Unbroken. Jolie has no talent in the field of making movies. Sorry but this is just terrible looking. I predict it to go to the Razzies then the Oscars .
They seem to have the “style” part down, we’ll see how they fared on the “substance” front. This is essentially a two-hander, so I am fairly certain it will all come down to the strength of dialogues. If Jolie nailed those, then this could be a great homage to the 70s.
There are just no words, on how bad this movie looks. I almost believe this is how they conduct themselves in real life. Domestic abuse, alcohol abuse, prescription and illegal drug abuse, threats of suicide. They are glamorizing all of it, for the big screen.
I thought Pitt was supposedly “French” in this movie…
The music that accompanies this trailer is horrid.
It’s no wonder why no media site is predicting awards for this movie.
Universal should hang their head in shame, for giving Jolie the opportunity to make this mess.
Watching this first day. I love Angenlina Jolie
Seems like there are attempting copying Leo and Kate. Trying to pull a Revolutionary Road. Only difference is Leo and Kate are far superior actors than Brad and Angelina.
I was about to say this looked like a mopier remake of Before Midnight, but that other person beat me to it. Let’s see…exotic locale, married couple at a crossroads, lots of scenery chewing fighting, and…is Pitt’s character ALSO a writer like Ethan Hawke was in Before Midnight?
Well I am intrigued.
I really liked Revolutionary road (underrated, that dance scene) it had style and substance (hard to swallow)
I hope this is more than style (and slapping)
This trailer is all right until people start talking. That “JUST STOP!” is awful.
I want this to be a nice throwback but my confidence is not bolstered.
this should have been filmed in black and white, Berger. the shot of Angie walking with the hat covering half of her head would have been GORGEOUS in b&w.
UGH
This looks like an incredibly sad 20 years later followup to Before Midnight.
It seems like she wanted to make this film just so she could make a film with her husband.
I’m really hoping it’s at least good and not as terrible as the godawful Unbroken. We’re essentially watching her go to film school. She’s learning as she goes along. If she keeps going, and learning from her mistakes, she could become a good filmmaker.
Sasha, I think you meant to say trailer for By the Sea. 😉
Um… I’m not sure what to make of that. I need more context, but based on that trailer, I’d say I’m at least intreagued.
This makes it seem like they’re gonna fight for much of the film.
This looks very old-fashion and that’s definitely a good thing. Need more pieces like this. Saying all that to say I hope it holds up.
Jolie has the uncanny talent to make grand cinematographers shoot like they were using the iPhone. First Deakins, now Berger. Looks uninspired. Only one who can save this is Pitt so I’m holding onto that shred of hope.
