(Press Release, September 12, 2015) – In the midst of a highly competitive film marketplace at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, EuropaCorp has partnered with FilmNation Entertainment to produce the political thriller Miss Sloane which will be directed by Academy Award® nominee John Madden (Shakespeare in Love), from a screenplay written by Jonathan Perera. The film will star two time Academy Award® nominee Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) in the eponymous leading role and production is slated to begin in March 2016. Ben Browning will produce for FilmNation Entertainment and Patrick Chu will be the executive producer. EuropaCorp will fully finance the film and handle worldwide distribution.
Miss Sloane tells the story of a powerful lobbyist (Chastain) who sacrifices her career on Federal Hill in order to successfully pass an amendment enforcing stricter gun control laws.
“The film’s subject matter of gun control is an incredibly important issue in today’s world,” said EuropaCorp CEO Christophe Lambert. “John Madden and Jessica Chastain bring with them such a high level of artistry, making Miss Sloane a perfect addition to the EuropaCorp slate.”
“We at FilmNation Entertainment are excited to be partnering with EuropaCorp,” said Glen Basner CEO FilmNation Entertainment. “And we are thrilled to see John Madden and Jessica Chastain working together again on what we know will be a highly entertaining and thought provoking film.”
UTA Independent Film Group represented FilmNation Entertainment on the deal. Jessica Chastain is represented by CAA; Mosaic; and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush & Kaller. Jonathan Perera is represented by Scott Carr of Management SGC.
I can already sense the very heated debates this film will inevitably inspire. Sounds interesting, though.
Aw, thanks, Paddy, looking forward to your LFF diary !
Sometimes I wonder if Phantom is actually the physical manifestation of a more coherent, eloquent version of my rambling, enraged subconscious. And that’s real rage, Sajf:2. You and your guns got nothing on Phantom’s level-headed intelligence.
Man, her turn as the young version of Helen Mirren’s character in The Debt was flat-out brilliant. She’s a terrific character actress and I love how eager she is to touch on a wide variety roles and subjects through her career choices. I can’t wait for a new collaboration of hers and Madden. By the way, I think The Debt was extremely underrated.
I’m just worried that the tribble rights activists are going to come after her for that jacket.
it’s alright because those tribbles are still alive and living a life of luxury.
Thanks you two.
WIth Phantom all the way.
There’s an element that only wants their own views reflected. Chastain has faced it before. All you can do is say “fuck ’em” and go full steam ahead.
There’s an element that only wants their own views reflected.
I deliberately seeded this headline with the words “gun control” and name-dropped former NFL blowhard John Madden to bait the post and lure that element onto this page where they will get tricked into seeing other views. Looks like we only got one nibble so far. Later today I’ll see what twitter can do to stir the pot.
A few months ago in a THR interview Julianne Moore dared to state the obvious – she is an atheist who hates guns – and within a few hours almost five thousand commenters decided to cyber bully her and trashtalk her in that distinctively disgusting way only very, very ignorant people can. Oh, and the average number of comments for a THR piece is usually between 0 and 50…so yeah, those five thousand do NOT read THR, do NOT care about films or even the actress they are trashing, hell I’m willing to best the majority of them did NOT even read the (rather lengthy) piece, they just read the headline (THR clearly wanted the clicks) and jumped on the hate bandwagon because they were told to do just that (courtesy of The Drudge Report).
So if that was their reaction when an actress dared to say she hates guns and is an atheist (of course they instantly turned latter into “she hates God” because that conscious misrepresentation of the quote sure justifies their urge to pick up the pitchforks, a bit more, too), I can only imagine what will happen when an actress will be seen in a high-profile film as a gun-control activist. And we don’t even have to go all the way back to January (Moore article), just look at the rage and hate Amy Schumer got for daring to say what a lot of us think : gun violence is a problem that needs to be fixed NOW.
Unfortunately my rage for (inevitable) things to come (regarding this new film, Miss Sloane), is completely realistic. But if I’m wrong and the Miss Sloane cast and crew including headliner Jessica Chastain will come out of this unscathed, please do get back to me and I will apologise for my mistake. I sure would prefer that option than another “how dare you say we don’t need 300 million privately owned guns in a country where 300 million people live you stupid little actress and by the way you’re a woman so know your place and shut your mouth not to mention you are rich and pretty with Hollyweird connections so we hate you no matter what anyway” kind of witchunt.
Finding those kind of hateful, ignorant, soul crushing comments under a film related article where the comments are supposed to be from people who actually give a fuck about films and love and appreciate the art form, is not something I enjoy, trust me … but it is something that does enRAGE me an awful lot, so you got THAT part right, I’ll give you that.

Phantom don’t blow a gasket your rage is showing

Here’s some advice. If you ever want to comment at AD again: Watch your step. Casual insults from drive-by unknowns directed at friends and contributors to this site are not tolerated. We look after one another here. If this snide attitude is your default mode, we don’t need it or want it.
If you’re a big bad gun owner with a big bad gun, go get shitfaced and clean it.
Damn, I hope this will be a fucking masterpiece so the inevitable, disgustingly unfair hate the right will no doubt throw at her for daring to touch this, will be worth it.

Random note:
In Japan it is extremely difficult — under normal circumstances — for one to locate weaponry or guns for him/herself. That’s probably why, in films, you usually see the characters fighting with — for instance — knives instead (if weapons happened to be part of the stunt work). : )
Press Release did read: “Miss Sloane tells the story of a powerful lobbyist (Chastain) who sacrifices her career on Federal Hill in order to successfully pass an amendment enforcing stricter gun control laws.”
I’m pretty excited about this.
I’m not saying that I’m going to typecast her — like the Bard had said — forever and a day, but I could clearly see (imagine) Jessica Chastain ably performing in any of politically-laden roles; to begin with, Chastain’s got that commendably serious air about her and, to me, following her post-ZeroDark days, she’s one of the first go-to thesps I would love to see or invite as part of the main cast in an English-speaking quality politics film.
I can’t imagine Chastain going wrong here (at least in her own part as the said character). She’s that great in this serious-drama sense, to me.
(By the way, all the best to Madden: I’m hoping we are going to see his Shakespeare in Lovesque effort here.)
In short: I’m in.
She was fabulous in The Debt, another film by Madden. Can’t wait!
If John Madden can get a performance as good as Gwyneth Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love, then this film should be great.

I like how we’re finally getting a film about this subject.
