Here’s an idea – let’s give Yahoo the exclusive to show the brand new photos from Inarritu’s The Revenant but then Yahoo is going to stuff them inside a tiny slideshow where you can’t look at them high resolution. That’s just what happened here. But hey we screen capped them in hopes you can get a better look. They have the pesky click tags on the side. Check out Yahoo for the full slideshow and text.
According to the Yahoo story, Jack Fisk talks of only using natural light sources, of filming only between the hours of 5:30 and 7:30pm:
This photo depicts Glass being hunted down by other outdoorsmen. Almost all lighting sources used for filming were natural, explains Fisk. “And this takes place before the kerosine lantern was invented.” Most filming took place between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. “We’d be scrambling at the end of the day to film the last few hours of daylight.”
Also:
DiCaprio, a vegetarian, was so in character he ate real meat in a scene depicting Glass surviving off a wild bison’s liver. “He had to eat the liver,” says Fisk. “I think he threw up afterward… he was so into it. It made me really appreciate the extent to which he’ll go to make things right.”
Bryce, I’m surprised you’ve got IDL lower than Wolf of Wall Street. I struggled with putting Elswitt in my dream ballot a few posts ago, and this from a PTA/Elswitt fanatic, but I’d have to watch it again to make a decision since the first viewing was all about story.
Hilarious. I was just thinking about Lubezki’s two Oscar wins and how I rated his competition those two years. Turns out I had him winning for GRAVITY and wasn’t even on my ballot for BIRDMAN. Here’re my favorite contributions to the art and craft of Cinematography from those consecutive years.
’13
1. Emmanuel Lubezki – GRAVITY
2. Luca Bigazzi – THE GREAT BEAUTY
3. Benoit Deby – SPRING BREAKERS
4. Rodrigo Prieto – THE WOLF OF WALL STREET
5. Hoyte van Hoytema – HER
6. Dariusz Wolski – THE COUNSELOR
7. Emmanuel Lubezki – TO THE WONDER
8. Agnès Godard – BASTARDS
9. Bruno Delbonnel – INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS
10. Matthias Grunsky – COMPUTER CHESS
’14
1. Robert Elswit – INHERENT VICE
2. Mikhail Krichman – LEVIATHAN
3. Valentyn Vasyanovych – THE TRIBE
4. Bradford Young – SELMA
5. Daniel Landin – UNDER THE SKIN
6. Timo Salminen – JAUJA
7. Jeff Cronenweth – GONE GIRL
8. Seamus McGarvey – GODZILLA
9. Ryszard Lenczewski, Lukasz Zal – IDA
10. Roman Vasynov – FURY
I would submit that Lubezki’s work in Michael Mann’s ALI is his must underrated work to date. I cannot recommend enough the director’s cut. Fingers crossed Mike thinks of Manu for his upcoming Enzo Ferrari biopic. They are dynamite together.
Paddy, I love Lubezski and can’t begrudge him for his wins either. I love the look of Gravity and it was obviously incredibly innovative. But I’m more of an old school cinematography lover, which is why I love his work on Birdman more. But he definitely deserved it for Children of Men and Tree of Life. New World I’d agree to…Sleepy Hollow, it’s been so long but I loved the look…didn’t see Little Princess, though I’ve wanted to. As far as how I would’ve voted for the ones he won for, the nominees for 2014 were Gravity, Prisoners, Nebraska, The Grandmaster and Inside Llewyn Davis. I, personally, would take out Prisoners and The Grandmaster and put in Her and 12 Years a Slave. From there it’s a crapshoot between Her, 12YAS and ILD. The nominees for 2015 were Birdman, Grand Budapest Hotel, Ida, Unbroken and Mr. Turner. I’d take out Unbroken and put in either Interstellar or Foxcatcher. Although I loved GBH I’d still probably vote for Birdman. For what it’s worth, his work on Y Tu Mama Tambien deserved more recognition. Though 2003 had a pretty good lineup.
Will Emmanuel Lubezki finally win an Oscar that he actually deserves?
Not hating on the guy, but he deserved to win for A Little Princess. He deserved to win for Sleepy Hollow. He deserved to win for The New World. He deserved to win for Children of Men. He deserved to win for The Tree of Life. He deserved to win, and wasn’t even nominated, for To the Wonder.
Not gonna begrudge him any win, certainly not his Gravity win (since I would have voted for it that year), not even his Birdman win (since I would have voted for anything else last year), but he didn’t deserve those Oscars for those films. These pictures look very beautiful.
but… but… Tarantino says, “Digital is the death of cinema.” …? 😕

As I’ve said elsewhere, I don’t doubt this will be an impressive looking film, but I’m afraid it’ll be something of an incoherent mess–kind of how Apocalypse Now’s detractors view its third act.
Photos look great but I want to see the movie.
…okay, I’ll be the first one to make the joke.
Did he enjoy it with some fava beans and a nice Chianti?
Team Leo will be out in full force this season and this “he ate liver” thing is just more fuel to the fire. Anticipate insults and belittlement for other actors in consideration. I’ve eaten liver, heart, stomach, ears, testes, tongue, etc. You’d be surprised how good everything fatty tastes thoroughly cooked with the right amount of sodium.
More and more, I’m warming to this film – the trailer, with all the heavy breathing kept making me think a fosse snap and a dance sequence was about to follow (not that I wouldn’t LOVE that). I love hearing about Fisk’s involvment. He is consistently good. It’s still baffling that this man has only been nominated once for an oscar, despite years of solid, although not flashy work.
If you put the link into http://deslide.clusterfake.net/ , it’ll give you the hi-res versions of the photos. I tried to paste the link here, but WordPress keeps thinking it’s spam.
I can’t wait to see this movie.
I’m relieved to hear that the buffalo scenes haven’t been removed. With all the talk of AGI’s departures from the source material, I was worried that these–among the book’s most moving scenes–wouldn’t make the cut.
