Broadgreen Pictures, Meryl Streep and Guy Oseary hosted a reception in West Hollywood to celebrate Song Of Lahore. The 2015 documentary film follows and celebrates the lives of Pakistani musicians, the Sachal Jazz Ensemble as they travel from Pakistan to New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center.
The crowd drew Virginia Madsen and Thandie Newton who got up to perform an inmpromtu dancealong, as well as Academy voting members. Directors Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Andy Schocken were also in attendance.
Obaid-Chinoy first heard of the Sachal Jazz Ensemble in 2011 and decided she was going to document the musicians and their voices. Filming began in 2012 and Schoken came on board as they filmed for over a year. Obaid-Chinoy says of the musicians, “They’re funny, and they’re exciting personalities to watch on screen.”
