The Spirit Awards have leaked or simply are on their website prior to their announcement this morning. They have really redefined what film awards mean with these, honoring films that are experimental, trying different rollouts and all but helping the film industry thrive and adapt. Tangerine, Beasts of No Nation, along with Carol (two Best Actress performance nominations!).

Should there not be a separate category for voice work actors? You simply cannot compare a VW performance with that of the complete physical presence, personality and performance of a live-action actor on-screen. Are we really putting the full-range performances of actresses like Marin Ireland or Robin Bartlet in the same category with Jennifer Jason Leigh’s tweetie-pie VW in Anomalisa? The latter is is ‘sweet’, but that’s it. The hype astounds me. It’s like a campaign for – “well, she’s never had a big award before so …”. For years I have failed to understand any appeal of this limited range and ultra-affected actress (and yes, I’ve seen practically everything she’s done). I realise I may be in a minority of one here….on this site anyway, perhaps less so in the wider world
Can we just skip the next six weeks and use these nominations?
I was thrilled to see Robin Bartlet nominated for Best Supporting Actress. She has been such a consistent, recognizable force in many films – always so subtle and precise in her delivery. She is one of my favorite, unheralded character actresses. She was shattering in Scorsese’s “Shutter Island” a few years ago, playing a wacked-out murderess (I still can’t get that character out of my mind – astonishing cameo here by Ms. Bartlet).
I’ll admit, I have not seen “H.”, but with this nomination, it’s at the top of my list to check it out.
I just realised that two Colombian movies got a couple of nominations.. Manos Sucias and Embrace of the Serpent. Awesome!!
So is it a bad day for ROOM? Why didn’t Carol’s editing get a nomination? It was immaculately composed and paced.
Loving the showing for It Follows. The rest, I’ve yet to see.
Blown away by these citations. Well of course when I think SPOTLIGHT indie is the first thing that comes to mind! Only highlights for me are the strong showing for TANGERINE, the screenplay recognition for BONE TOMAHAWK and DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL, and the acting nod for RESULTS. Hoping it’s the first of many mentions of Michael Shannon in 99 HOMES.
And besides, maybe we can already start thinking of two Animated Movies in the BP poll?
It’s also funny that H. was nominated for the second consecutive year, winning last february Someone to Watch Award, and this time nominated for supporting female
Loving most of this news, but not loving what it says about Room’s prospects for a Best Pic nomination.
SO glad for Embrace of the Serpent & Russian Woodpecker
These nominations are incredible! Beasts, including Attah!! Tangerine noms! Anomalisa! Just so so good.
I am happy to see Beasts of No Nation, Tangerine, and It Follows up for awards. I thought each movie was well done and breathed some new life into independent cinema.
More category confusion with Mara and Blanchett. I still believe SAG and Oscar will put Mara in supporting. I am surprised not to see Tremblay from Room nominated for best actor. I guess Attah getting a nod was their young actor quota.
There is no confusion, they are co-lead and should be in lead. Trying to force a lead actress into support defeats its purpose and denies real support the chance to win.
I agree with what you’re saying. I just don’t believe TWC will want them competing against each other. I am considering the campaign. Blanchett as a 2 time winner will probably get the biggest push.
Not happy to see It Follows when they could have had Ex Machina or God knows what else. It Follows was better than most horror, still not terrific, especially after seeing a masterpiece like The Babadook.
Just came across the following on THR: “English-language productions of a small-scale that were not eligible for any noms because of their national affiliation included 45 Years, Brooklyn, The Danish Girl, Ex Machina, Suffragette and Youth, among others”.
Maybe because it is a British production? Inexcusable.
I love the inclusion of It Follows! Not an academy movie, but definitely worthy of recognition!
Sasha I’m loving your photo choices lately. 🙂 Keaton here and Stallone’s face carrying that giant Oscar. So adorbs.
I feel like if it’s not Ridley Scott’s year which I think it is, then it’s Todd Haynes’. I have no idea what will take BP but I feel like it’s definitely one of them for BD. I didn’t get to see CAROL at NYFF but we were able to get into one of the director chats he did and my old Ma said “He seems like such a nice man”. 😀
Best Direction will go with Best Picture unless the Academy give the award to stunning direction and the only one that meets that criteria and really stands out is George Miller for his startling direction of Mad Max: Fury Road.
I haven’t seen CAROL so I have no idea how it feels to be on that train; so far I am a total Ridley fanboy for BD even though I’m predicting Russell. I could ditch Scott (he won’t mind from me) for Miller if he made it in though…but he won’t 🙁
I find it hilarious that IT FOLLOWS manages a Best Director nom, but not a Best Feature nom because Director has 6 slots while Feature has only 5. Do Director and Documentary have 6 slots due to a tie of some sort in the nominations process?
Yes
with rooney mara being put in lead AGAIN i think the oscars should follow suit and stop dumbing down lead roles. if felcity jones was lead last year than mara and alaicia vikander should be in contention for that category, and that category only, too.
Was Brooklyn eligible?
I haven’t seen Brooklyn, but I think the reason it didn’t get any nominations is because maybe the film isn’t Indie spirit enough. I don’t think its chances at the Oscars will be harmed because it might be a more Oscar friendly film.
I think The Spirit awards only cover small budget American movies.
Extremely happy for Carol
I can’t believe no best male lead nomination for Cliff Curtis for “The Dark Horse” The best male lead performance of the year!!
So am I gonna get yelled at by commenters again when I point out that the downward spiral of Room’s Best Picture hopes continues? Or are people going to start admitting that it’s been ridiculously overhyped?
Just like George Clooney Oscar nomination chances went down following his Indie Spirit snub in 2011! This is one award. Maybe you want the film to fail, but it won’t.
technically it’s the second of its kind that Room has missed out on (also Gotham), in situations (indie bodies) where many were expecting it to and should have excelled. Spotlight and Carol both found their places into those races. And those bodies DID see Room, they just didn’t think the film is good enough to be up for the biggest awards.
This is the irrefutable evidence. If you want to choose to ignore it then by all means continue to convince yourself it has a shot at a BP nomination and please please please keep considering it a frontrunner to win. I’ll love to see the stats when it wins BP without a single precursor nomination or win.
Again, making it sound as if I’ve stated somewhere I consider it a front-runner to win is such a cheap rhetoric trick. And your assumption that it won’t get a single precursor nomination or win is an assumption and highly unlikely. And FYI: I’m predicting Spotlight and I feel pretty good about my prediction. At this point.
Beasts of no Nation is an amazing film and surely deserves the Oscars. The Actors are amazing. Abraham Attah for Best Actor is right on point and Idris Elba killed it once again. Cary was on point with directing and the editors were super!!!!! Beasts of NO Nation all the way
2 out of these 5 nominees will probably nom’d for the Oscar. I’d say Spotlight and either Carol or Beasts of No Nation. Watch out for Tangerine, though, specially at Best Actress.
“EITHER CAROL”??? Does it hurt for people to work so hard refusing to admit that it’s the CLEAR critics frontrunner?
It’s not. They could give it raves but when it comes to voting for awards, they’ll look elsewhere. It’s not a passion pick, weird as it sounds.
I mean… my evidence is a high metacritic score, more noms here than Spotlight, noms at Gotham… what is your evidence that it won’t excel “when it comes to voting for awards”?
Again, “Far from Heaven”, is proof enough, that it isn’t a lock for a BP nomination just yet. It’s difficult Oscar and ISA will match 3/5, at least 1 out of Carol and Beasts of No Nation won’t make the cut. I’d say BoNN will fail, though, given the Netflix factor. But the only one that I see locked – subjet to change, though – is Spotlight.
You should investigate all the “proofs” that would deem Spotlight not a lock for a BP nomination, too. You can start with Foxcatcher.
Spotlight most likely would have received three acting nominations had it not been for the Robert Altman Award, so the number of nominations doesn’t matter.
Call it a hunch or whatever you like, but Carol won’t win picture from the big critics’ groups. Maybe cinematography or a few wins for Mara.
let’s return to this comment after NYFCC announced next week.
Though I’ll enjoy to hear you call them NOT a “big critics group” at that point.
Maybe to you it’s ok to talk down to people just assuming stuff to make yourself look so witty, but you don’t know a thing about me and you just wrote that to imply I’ll say anything just to prove my theory, which isn’t the case. You’re doing that using this cheap rhetoric.
FOXCATCHER represents no model for how SPOTLIGHT could (and I predict will) perform with The Academy, Benutty. A plodding and confused preciousness masquerading as meditative formal ambivalence is not something SPOTLIGHT’s got working against it. If I remember correctly, at this stage, not many were predicting it for a BP nomination and on nomination morning it surprised many with that BD call for Miller. SPOTLIGHT appears to be more in line with PRESIDENT’S MEN or INSIDER.
“If I remember correctly, at this stage, not many were predicting it for a BP nomination and on nomination morning it surprised many with that BD call for Miller.”
Exactly.
It’s still open field and tide might turn, once Critics start rolling their awards, but Spotlight seems right in the alley for a BP win, not just a nom.
According to whom? All I see is passion for Carol – the reviews, the nominations, the box office. I’d feel pretty passionate about picking Carol over almost every other film this year.
Far from Heaven, anyone?
you think that the Far from Heaven snubs work AGAINST Carol? lol
Far From Heaven snubs won’t work against Carol just like Before Midnight’s snubs didn’t work against Boyhood. Sure it didn’t win the whole enchilada but it made it the big categories.
Chus von Demuth didn’t even write that it’s going to work against it. You all read it the way you wanted to read it. He just gave an example of a film that did especially well with early awards (both the Spirits and even the almighty NYFCC; it actually tied for most NYFCC wins ever) but barely registered at the Oscars and was snubbed even in categories it was considered a lock in.
I remind people what happened when Todd Haynes made a supposedly “undeniable” film for the big awards. They remembered “Poison”, probably, and that Haynes is one of the kings of “queer cinema”. It took them ages to give Almodovar an Oscar, remember?
Sin Nombre, anyone? Jane Eyre, anyone?
Hmm. That link doesn’t work anymore to the Spirit official page.
And, that Best Actor category?! Wow, I can easily see that none of those actors will get Oscar Nominations – very rare these days since there is usually so much overlap. Best Actress on the other hand, could see 4 of the women getting Oscar nods (Mara will likely be supporting).
Rooney is probably staying in lead. She already has the Cannes win (where they make no distinction) and an Indie Spirit nominations in lead. She’ll get a Globe nomination in lead. BAFTA’s will put her in lead. And even with SAG in supporting, she’ll just look like a lead actress by the time Oscar voters fill out their ballots. The question here is whether the Oscars will have two actresses from the same film.
It looks like:
1. Brie Larson
2. Saoirse Ronan
3. Charlotte Rampling
4. Rooney Mara
5. Cate Blanchett
But Blanchett is vulnerable. Maybe if Lawrence becomes a force, but I doubt that.
Lol Blanchett is actually the safest nominee out of all. Rampling above her? You’re new to this right?
From the Carol ladies, Mara is very vulnerable because of the category issues.
No, I’m not. And what are you? Too full of yourself?! And believe me, Blanchett is the safest just as Tom Hanks was safe for Captain Phillips. If things don’t pan out the way as expected for Carol, Mara is more likely to end up a nominee than Blanchett. And there is no way Blanchett is safer than Larson. Rampling has a very strong narrative.
Cate is nothing like Tom. Strong character work vs. an imperfect accent and the victim role.
“If things don’t pan out the way as expected for Carol, Mara is more likely to end up a nominee than Blanchett”
No, and nonsensical.
Blanchett is not Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips in 2013.
Again, that ranking shows you you know little about this.
because of the confusion I think Mara is the most vulnerable.
Love love love these nominations! No one film dominates, and several worthy titles pick up deserving nominations in a number of categories. Minorities are represented, including two trans women and five POC up for acting awards. True independent spirit has been recognised, be it in innovations in filmmaking (Anomalisa) or distribution (Beasts of No Nation) or in low-budget productions (Tangerine). And some real left-field picks, such as Robin Bartlett and Marin Ireland up for Supporting Female and Koudous Seihon for Male Lead, Meadowland for Cinematography and Bone Tomahawk for Screenplay. I haven’t seen all of the Best Feature nominees, but I can attest to having enjoyed many of the films up for awards here – Carol, Tangerine, The Look of Silence, Results, Son of Saul, Girlhood, Heaven Knows What, and several others. Excellent work, Film Independent.
I guess if one sees it from your angle they do look great. #halfempty #cranky
Pet this is as good as it’s gonna get this season. I might as well at least try to crack a smile for once… 😀
IT FOLLOWS! One of the very best of the years.
Ugh I thought it was awful
I thought it was somewhere in between the two. Happy to see a horror film do well though. Genre fare is decently represented this year, what with Advantageous and Bone Tomahawk popping up too.
I agree – between the two. And not even close to as good as Babadook
I cringe if this is the Oscar lineup. Lord God, let it not be…
I was hoping Me and Earl and the Dying Girl would show up, but it didn’t.
I thought Lily Tomlin would be nominated for Grandma as well.
Yay for Jason Segel! And Christopher Abbott!
Cate and Rooney!
I have a feeling Room will only be nominated for best actress. Joan Allen didn’t get nominated.
I’m surprised no one from Spotlight was nominated as well.
I was hoping Me and Earl and the Dying Girl wouldn’t show up! And it almost didn’t. I’ll look on the bright side, though – in another time, that film could’ve led these nominations.
Booooo! Haha.
No way ROOM will only make it into actress. It’ll get the Oscar nominations. The Indie Spirits aren’t that much of a precursor.
I did get a Best First Screenplay nom.
Thanks! I just noticed it.
NO INDIVIDUAL ACTOR FROM SPOTLIGHT IS ELIGIBLE. THE FILM THAT WINS THE ROBERT ALTMAN AWARD CAN’T RECEIVE INDIVIDUAL ACTING NODS.
Sasha, please mention it in the article because this could wrongfully create snub talk.
That makes sense! Thanks for the info.
Wow, that’s a weird rule…
YES TANGERINE YES!! THATS TWO FOR TWO. LETS GET IT BITCHES!!!!
I haven’t seen H or Glass Chin, but Robin Barlett and Marin Ireland are both extraordinary stage actresses, and I’m thrilled to see them on this list, even if I can’t speak to the individual performances. Few things would make me happier than Mya Taylor winning in that category, though. I can’t say if she was the best, but I do know she was extraordinary. And it would be so heartening to see a trans woman of color win a big award like this. I’d say the same of Kiki Rodriguez, but I didn’t think she shone quite as brightly as Taylor.
I’ll also say that I’m disappointed to see Beasts of No Nation in for Picture and Director.
Even just from the list of other movies they nominated, I thought The Diary of a Teenage Girl, James White, Girlhood, Room, and Love and Mercy were better.
EXCELLENT nominations. Nice to see Beasts, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Michael Shannon. Sad for no Jacob Tremblay or Alexander Skarsgard.
You’re still calling Bel Powley “BEL POLOWY”?! She ain’t Polish. Also, Diary of a Teenage Girl is THE Diary of a Teenage Girl, End of the Tour is THE End of the Tour, Cary Fukunaga ir Cary JOJI Fukunaga, Look of Silence is THE Look of Silence, etc. Getting lazy, Sasha!
Not to mention her repeatedly referring to Mya Taylor as Maya Taylor
Sasha was trying to grab these nominees as quickly as possible from pages at Film Independent that were disappearing as fast as they went up.
Awards Daily was the first place you could see these nominees thanks to Sasha’s fast typing, so if you think that’s lazy then I think you’re …. something I won’t say.
While my comment is about this article, it applies to many of her articles. It’s lazy.
Go away then. Nobody is forcing you to read AD.
People at this site really hate constructive criticism.
What people at this site really hate, is unnecessary bitching.
Next time you have anything interesting to say, your comment will show up on the site. Until then, nope.
Constructive criticism isn’t a bad thing, Ryan.
Thank you for all the hard work and your fast fingers in getting these up Sasha!!
Jesus Christ you are incredibly picky
Getting the names of people and films correct is picky, yeah.
If it’s misspelling somebody’s name, or getting the name or title completely wrong, then yeah. But 60% of your criticism (being nice with that word) is because the word “the” was left out of the title. And then you say Sasha is getting lazy. So, really, you were just looking for any minute issue to throw at her. Unless I’m mistaken, Fukunaga didn’t always have his name credited “Cary Joji Fukunaga” until recently. Before it was just “Cary Fukunaga”. I could be wrong but that’s how I remember it. Do you always say “Angelina Jolie” or, “Angelina Jolie Pitt”? I sure hope you get her name right or else somebody who got their Cheerios peed on will point a big middle finger and say, “It’s Angelina Jolie PITT! You’re getting lazy, best feet…excuse me…THE best feet.”
My feet are, indeed, THE best. I can msg you pics?
Takeaways:
– CAROL coming up short in Editing is curious. It’s ostentatiously edited.
– No breakout acting nomination for SPOTLIGHT, although it gets an (undeserved) ensemble award. Liev Scrhieber is my favorite by far, if only because he doesn’t have to fight a spotty accent.
– CAROL CAROL CAROL. May it continue this dominance this season.
– IT FOLLOWS won’t manage any Oscar traction and neither will BONE TOMAHAWK, so it’s nice to see these nominations for good genre films.
– ROOM is weaker here than it might have been, which is worrisome for a film on the cusp.
– I don’t think THE DANISH GIRL or SUFFRAGETTE would have factored much here if they were eligible outside of International Feature.
– BEASTS getting nominations is interesting, but I would not expect any anti-Netflix bias to exist here, where it might at the Academy level. I still think Elba’s on course for an Oscar nomination.
– SPOTLIGHT proves that its Frontrunner status wasn’t misplaced.
– I don’t like ANOMALISA, but this is a nice showing for the film to be sure. The JJL nomination could only help her HATEFUL EIGHT bid.
– I’d love if those TANGERINE girls repeated at Oscar, unlikely as it is.
This…is a fantastic slate of nominees. The love for Beasts of No Nation and Anomalisa is something to behold. The director nomination for David Robert Mitchel is just WHOA good. Where are the other categories? First feature, first screenplay, cinematography?

YES for David Robert Mitchell!
Also, to Sasha and copy editors: It’s David *Robert* Mitchell, not Roger.
I’m strangely happier seeing It Follows in for best director and not best picture. The mood and setting truly transported me.
I’ve seen almost everything (haven’t seen GLASS CHIN or H) and I am a voter, so I’ll offer my picks:
Picture / Director / Screenplay/Cinematography: CAROL (Thrilled to see IT FOLLOWS in director)
Editing: IT FOLLOWS
Actress: Brie Larson, ROOM
Actor: Christopher Abbot, JAMES WHITE
Supp. Actress: Mya Taylor, TANGERINE (I might switch this to Nixon though…)
Supp. Actor: Paul Dano, LOVE & MERCY
First Screenplay: THE MEND
First Feature: JAMES WHITE
Documentary: (T)ERROR
Cassavetes Award: KRISHA
International Film: GIRLHOOD
I feel bad for Mya Taylor and James Ransone from TANGERINE as well as ROOM and Jacob Tremblay, but this is a nice list overall.
SPOTLIGHT is overrated. So lacking in suspense, a sense of mystery, or even much in the way of character detail.
Oh, M(a)ya Taylor was nominated!
Spotlight must be getting the Ensemble Award. How was Love and Mercy not nominated for Best Picture?
I had to do a double check on that Supporting Actor list.
Sorry to not see Elizabeth Banks in the Supporting Actress nominees
Anomalisa
Beasts of No Nation
Carol
Spotlight
Tangerine
As amazing as Love & Mercy is, it’s hard to argue with those nominees even though I haven’t seen everything. What I’ve heard about them all is stellar. Whoever says this is a weak year for film should look at this slate and know this is just a fraction of the good shit out there.
You are being ironic, surely? Take a moment to think about all the stupendous films not not that list. it seems as if the Spirit awards simply want to be ‘different’ and raise some eyebrows. To attract controversy and publicity by leaving out something like 45 Years or Brooklyn or The Lobster or Mr Holmes (and the latter two would have helped them lay a greater claim to being ‘ independent’ in choice btw) – in favour of the very slight piece (though technically brilliant) Anomalisa or even Tangerine (which I like and think is a quite an achievement but should not be patronised with an award of the ‘good boy, and you did this all on your little cellphone, did you – here’s a prize!’ school). Someone beam me back to reality fast…
Tangerine! Tangerine! Tangerine!
