Well, having seen Clouds Of Sils Maria, I have to say that watching Kristen Stewart winning all these awards from critics over the last few days and the possibility of seeing her nominated for an Oscar for her work in Assaya’s film is in my humble opinion way too much of a praise. I’ve watched most of Stewart’s films by now and while I wouldn’t call her a bad actress and I was pleasantly surprised by her really good work recently in Camp X-Ray, Still Alice and especially Clouds Of Sils Maria, I think she has some extremely obvious limitations, something that is clear even in her strongest work and unfortunately her solid turn as Valentine in Assaya’s film is to me no exception. She has a profoundly limited range of facial expressions when trying to reflect the emotions of her characters, so you may have some cringe-worthy moments when watching her even in something she’s clearly good at – watch COSM for example. There are moments in Assaya’s film when you go “hell, she’s REALLY good” and then moments when you’re totally sure that an actress of raw emotional force and depth like Jennifer Lawrence or Brie Larson would add so much more to the role.
but i mean…how do you really feel
Fantastic, thanks for your concern.
Except a performance in a movie is not like an Olympic sport. We can’t see eight actresses do the same role and say ‘Well she’s the best.’ If were going to play that game, then I think a young Bette Davis would have done terrifically in that role as well.
Obviously a performance is not like an Olympic sport. I obviously stated MY opinion on her performance and while I found her work pretty remarkable, I feel the praise is a little too much and perhaps an actress of a wider range could do far better with that role. To each their own I guess.
Her character in Clouds of Sils Maria doesn’t have any space for big dramatic acting moments. Valentine doesn’t have a dramatic arch so it’s kind of nonsense for you to complain that Stewart didn’t deliver something like that. I don’t think it’s a case of “limited range”, at least judging by that performance, it’s a case of respecting the script and I think she was wonderful, she was magnetic in that film.
Did you even bother to read my comment before replying? I never said that there was any space in her character for big dramatic acting moments nor should there be. Her performance, while in my mind grounded, affecting and surpringly strong overall, lacked the depth and layers that would maker her potrayal of Valentine truly astonishing and worthy of so many accolades. An actress of a wider range could have easily added a lot more dimensions and layers in a role as crucial in the film as Valentine is. That’s not to say she didn’t do a really good job. If anything, she proved that her work even before the Twilight movies was indicative of an actress who can put out an effortlessly solid turn when the material allows her to. Juliette Binoche was for me the real standout of the film.
so tired of these stewart haters, they write these long paragraphs, explaining nothing, it’s just hate period.
I never was and I’m pretty sure I never will be a hater of either Kristen Stewart or anyone I don’t even know in person. I think I expressed pretty clearly my opinion: I found her really good in the film but not as great and awards-worthy these latest critics’ wins suggest. You know what I’m tired of? I’m tired of people who accuse anyone of being a hater simply because they have their own views and are able to elaborate on them.
Oh please, Elaborate on what really? It’s always the same petty arguements, ‘limited range’, guess what, it’s psychological you watch her movies with those thoughts in your mind- you can’t see anything else, your mind is set that way already. And please why bother watching Stewart movies when you are thinking about Jennifer, that’s where your problem is..
Wait, what? Of course I’ll watch her films why shouldn’t I? I don’t have anything against her, I think she’s a good actress who is at her element when working in indie projects and more substantial roles than the ones she had in the Twilight movies or Snow White and The Huntsman. Watching Steart movies while thinking about Jennifer Lawrence and being prejudiced against her? Why on earth would someone do that? That’s just out of nowhere. Have you ever heard of the word “art”? It’s supposed to broaden our critical understanding of the world. It requires being open to other people’s viewpoints. You want to adore Kristen Stewart and think she’s an incredible actress? That’s totally fine with me. Personally, I think she’s solid, not incredible or worthy of such praise. Talking with you was a complete waste of time. It’s equally funny and sad to me when one who’s genuinely in love with film and acting as much as I am find themselves talking with people who should better stick with reading the tabloids and see haters everywhere.
Oh yea, ‘genuinely’ in love with art and film alright, but the long paragraphs and essays are always reserved for Kristen Stewart. Anyway, I can see a lot of people who posted here do not agree with your essay on your thoughts about art and film when it comes to Stewart, So need to discuss this further.
So happy to see Charlotte Rampling being properly appreciated. Yes, I loved Cotillard and Blanchett but Rampling is utterly la creme de la creme. Kristen Stewart – they got that right too. And Mark Rylance, another worthy winner. He is such a formidable actor.
Best New Filmmaker award to Marielle Heller (Diary of a Teenage Girl) – excellent choice, even if it did push Alex Garland into runner-up position.
As predicted, the Boston group goes for SPOTLIGHT.
Terrific movie, but keep in mind that this group also picked the home set MYSTIC RIVER and DEPARTED, as well as giving major awards to GONE BABY GONE, Marky Mark, Ben Affleck etc.
Love & Mercy for Best Score? Odd.
The Boston group has a weird thing about “use of music” so a bunch of 50 year old Beach Boys songs are considered a “score” by this group.
I’ve discussed it with a couple of their members, but they are obstinate.
Which is strange because before they starting announcing their awards, they posted on Twitter that they “Voted to eliminate ‘Best Use of Music’ in favor of ‘Best Original Score.'” And then they give ‘Best Use of Music’ to Love & Mercy? So I’m confused, do they mean they voted on whether or not to change and they decided not to or that this will take effect next year?
A. Ross still composed several tracks for the Original score of Love&Mercy, so i’d rather say it’s his award – and not a recognition of the Beach Boys
The citation seems to read: ”Best Use of Music: Atticus Ross, composer; featuring the music of Brian Wilson.” … The N.Y. Film Critics Online also awarded a ”Best Use of Music” prize to ”Love & Mercy.” … What an insult to film composers who created wholly new scores from scratch. (I wish the Oscars would go back to 2 categories: Original & Adaptation.)
It IS welcome attention for an excellent film, so I won’t grumble too much.
Tell that to all the composers who sat down and COMPOSED original music, but lost to a mixtape.
Shouldn’t THEY get some ‘welcome attention’ too?
No, they absolutely should. I don’t approve the BFCS’ call beyond the fact that it was in favor of a good film which hasn’t been much appreciated by the awards groups outside of Paul Dano. Based purely on score, Mad Max, It Follows, and many others are more worthy.
Great winners! Spotlight, Carol, Leo, Charlotte, Mark, Kristen.
The line up of Leo,Saoirse,Sly and Kstew as this year’s oscar winners would be one of the best in recent years..
I hope carol wins la but mad max fury road is doing so well. Its awesome show
Leo, BABY!!!! YESS!!! Also, praise for Mad Max which is dominating a lot of these early awards. Plus, Lubezki is doing OK but the 3rd Oscar is not a certainty. Mad Max and Carol are pushing it.
The Look of Silence wins Best Foreign Film, but not Best Documentary!? Very amusing. A way of saying “Amy” is better than any non-American film made this year.
Yeah, it was like the year the Oscars nominated WALTZ WITH BASHIR for Foreign Language Picture but it didn’t get an Best Animated Feature nomination, bested by the likes of SHARK TALE! So, WALTZ was one of the 5 best movies in the World, but, it was nothing compared to the masterwork that is SHARK TALE!
Wrong year, dude.
Oops. I meant BOLT. But, the point still is the same. BASHIR was considered one of the 5 best movies on Earth, but, not worthy compared to the masterpiece that is BOLT.
Bolt is quite an underrated Disney film. Bashar was fine, but I feel it only got so much praise because it was foreign.
I think the look of silence is the best film of the year, I never though of it as a foreign film.
But I like it.
I live, i die, i live again!! Mad Max is such a beast, i’m so glad for all the mentions for it!
Wow, White God, a Hungarian film is runner-up in foreign language, Son of Saul is nowhere. Was it ineligible?
WHITE GOD is terrific. A very odd parable about the Immigration crisis in Europe.
YEAH! You go, Leo! (but even when he wins, he can’t win alone lol just kidding)
The Revenant better start picking up some more steam (and it’s only at 78 on MC) or he’s gonna be fighting a bigger uphill battle.
i’m worried about this too….
Relax. They don’t need critics groups. Neither do Joy and H8.
i hope you’re right
Not all three of those movies are gonna be massive nomination receivers at the Oscars. They just aren’t. One or two of them are gonna miss the target.
True but they are more televised precursor and guild players than critics circle ones.
Lol. Revenant, Joy dont need any love from critics. Need only SAG and Globes…everyone knows about these films…
The critics hated it and we know why.
I’m having a hard time seeing how Tom McCarthy wins BD at Critics’ awards. Such a non-showy movie for a director, especially when up against Haynes and Miller. That poses problems to SPOTLIGHT in the bigger picture.
Same way how Hooper won. That was super non-showy especially compared to Fincher, Aronofsky, Nolan (who wasn’t nominated for AMPAS but scored DGA).
The King’s Speech was not nearly as non-showy as Spotlight. Re: framing, cinematography, pacing. In fact, I can think of few movies as non-showy as Spotlight.
Oh, I beg to differ and how did it beat Fincher. That was shocking” Anyway Oscar rewards Best Picture winner with Best Direction too.
So then, McCarthy ain’t winning.
He’s got a very good chance of winning if he’s film win Best Picture. Oscars rarely separate their two main prizes unless their is a showy direction. I can see any film that can be described as such except MMFR.
Showy direction = MMFR, The Revenant, The Martian (highly technical movies are considered showy in direction department). Out of those 3, one won’t win director, one has director who’s current front-runner or runner-up depending who you are talking to and one that is rising thanks to critical support.
I have nothing against showy if it’s form matching content. But, those criticisizing SPOTLIGHT are the ones you should be talking to.
All will be clear next week.
:_ SPOTLIGHT – At the VIENNALE – Filmfestival in Vienna – 50-60 & per cent of Europe’s Festival moviegoers have left the cinema, most of the seats were left empty, all I can say, people really were “FED UP”with the storyline, all old stuff . 🙂
Sorry, I didn’t mean showy direction. I meant only when there’s an exceptional direction would the Academy separate Best Picture and Direction. You might called showy whatever you like but there’s only one outstanding direction and that’s MMFR by George Miller. Think “Saving Private Ryan””Traffic”, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”, “The Pianist”, “Brokeback Mountain” and “Gravity”. You can even add Life of Pi, which was exceptionally difficult to bring to the big screen. Ang Lee and Polanski are exceptional directors.
I heartily agree there – Best Director should not be tied to Best Picture so often. It’s the dullards in the Academy who lazily twin the two too often.
I don’t think that’s a big problem for him because the Academy tends to reward the director of the Best Picture winner. TKS director Tom Hooper beat TSN director David fincher, and remember Fincher was overdue too.
Form matching content.
Not all movies have to be “showy”.
I’ll take SPOTLIGHT’s sober realism over any empty-headed but oh so showy Wes Anderson movie or QT film any day of the week and thrice on Sunday.
The job of every film is to capture its subject perfectly.
Exactly!
Haynes will win bd carol will win bp in la and boston
Spotlight for the win. Mad Max runner up
Pretty expected really.
Still greta showing for MM again. So who was runner-up director?
Spotlight.
s***.
Director to Haynes. If Picture is indeed Spotlight, then I will have called this split correctly. I hope it’s not Spotlight though. There are better movies this year.
Boston selection of Best Director almost never matches the Oscars.
Most people are calling a split decision for the awards this year.
Haynes for BD
Now the biggie…if they award Carol I will be so stoked. I presume it’s Spotlight. Could be Mad Max too.
Ohohoho, if Carol takes it (cause Director and Picture should match) Spotlight is indeed screwed. Go MMFR and Martian!
Personally I really liked Spotlight and will probably be around 9/10 of my best of the year list but I came away thinking it wasn’t anywhere near a Best Picture WINNER
Same
I hear you. I’ve been saying that, in the year of so many cinematic movies, they couldn’t possibly go for the most unexciting un-cinematic one.
How many films have you seen this year? A placement of 9 or 10 seems like a pretty fine choice for best picture. I’m pretty thrilled any time one of my top 10 wins.
KStew is a mini-Leo. Both starred in huge movies that garnered them tons of hate and mocking, both overcame it with bold follow-up choices and rebuilding their careers. I sympathize with and admire both of them and I hope they makes the line-up this year.
Leo has more talent in his pinkie toe nail than Kristen in her entire body then multiplied by ten. What a stupid comparison.
It’s a totally great comparison. Difference is, he’s a bone fide movie star and she’s a character actress that accidentally ended up in a movie star role (where she doesn’t feel comfortable). She’s an indie queen and those movies are where she shines the best because you can see she’s in her element.
L.A Film critics awards Best Supporting Actor: Mchael Shannon, 99 Homes Runner-Up: Mark Rylance, Bridge Of Spies.
Way to go stallone in supporting actor for both la and boston.
what? Stallone wasn’t even runner up in LA. Shannon won with Rylance runner up
Best Actor is a tie between Paul Dano for Love & Mercy and Dicaprio for The Revenant.
“The other two names in the final rounds of best actor, FWIW, were
Cranston for #TrumboMovie and Tom Hardy for #Legend” – Ty Burr
Over at L.A Film critics awards: Best Cinematography:MMFR Runner-up Carol. Best Music Score: Carter Burwell, Anomalisa and Carol.
I don’t how he wasn’t nominated for “Fargo”. It’s just such an iconic score.
I very much like the Ronan-Rylance-Stewart consenus being built by the critics. (I know Ronan was only runner-up here.) How nice if those were the Oscar results. Actor is a total mystery though.
I guess Stallone is as much a top contender for Supp. Actor as Rylance.
I saw Brooklyn yesterday and can’t get over it. I am not typically a period romance fan but I was seriously in love with everything about it. Pitch perfect and deserves any and all awards it gets along the way
I felt the same way. It’s a wonderful movie. I loved ROOM, didn’t enjoy it as much, but maybe admire it more. Though I’d give the Oscar to Ronan, and predict she’ll get it.
Saw it a few days ago and absolutely loved it. It’s such a beautiful film, anchored by a truly extraordinary performance from Saoirse Ronan.
Hooray for Charlotte Rampling! Well deserved, and about time too!
Indeed, finally she deserves many attention for her magnificent and glorious performance!
So happy for Charlotte!
So awesome
I’m shocked Ronan didn’t won, but at least she in second place.
Kristen Stewart AGAIN for the win
Awesome. AMPAS better be paying attention and realizing they should see this powerhouse of a movie.
Vikander was runner up. I like that
Was it for The Danish Girl or Ex Machina?
Unspecified. No particular film, so effectively for all four of her supporting roles released this year.
Thanks!
Rodrigo, the way I understand it, according to Ty Burr, they would only have to say for which film if Vikander had won. They would re-vote to determine which role if she had won.
Thanks Ryan!
Best Ensemble: Spotlight
Best ensemble is another award that will help Spotlight too. It’s already got Best Original Screenplay Oscar in the bag and its also favourite to win Best Picture.
Mad max fury road wins editing
that was awarded awhile ago
Best Screenplay: Spotlight
this is where i assume Spotlight starts taking over
It might or it might not. There’s a lot of love for MMFR.
Spotlight probably takes Picture, someone else takes Director. I’m looking at Haynes but maybe Miller.
Yes, that’s a possibility but it would seem weird to give Best Direction to Todd Haynes but not his film as Best Picture. If here’s a split, I expect Miller to win Best Direction.
Amy beats The Look of Silence to Best Documentary. The look on my face isn’t what I’d call silent.
I haven’t seen The Look of Silence yet, but I thought Amy was pretty great! Surely it can’t be that bad of a winner.
If Joshua Oppenheimer loses again to a simplistic doc about the entertainment business, I’m going to lose it. The loss of The Act of Killing to 20 Feet was one of the most damning and embarrassing moments for the Oscars I can remember.
I disagree about Amy being simplistic, but to each their own.
The Academy embarrasses itself in the Documentary field on a regular basis. Not just the outrageous idea that a good extended 60-Minutes profile (20 Feet) should win over Act of Killing (one of the greatest documentaries ever) — and this idiotic decision was echoed by the Indie Spirits!!– but choosing Undefeated (trash) over 4 better documentaries including Pina (2011) and the bland Searching for Sugar Man over 4 better documentaries including The Gatekeepers for a hat-trick of vapidity. Guess we should thank the fact that Harvey Weinstein was behind Citizenfour.
And, don’t forget that 20 FEET didn’t only beat ACT OF KILLING, but also the superb THE SQUARE.
It’s not, but I don’t think I enjoyed it as much as the majority of critics and online voices did. On the other hand, The Look of Silence is a masterpiece!
Oh, okay. I see. Seems like I’ll have to check out The Look of Silence then.
Amy wins Best Doc!
Past few years they’ve gone a bit against the norm in Best Supporting Actor/Actress…I hope we see more of the same. In past few years some of the winners have been: Ezra Miller for Perks, James Gandolfini in Enough Said, Albert Brooks in Drive, Melissa McCarthy in Bridesmaids, Juliette Lewis for Conviction, etc
Carol is getting a lot of love in the cinematography department in early awards. I love it
so far so good
OT: So I’m finally cool with Brie Larson, used to hate that bitch just by looking at pictures of her, but I’ve finally actually seen her act in something (Trainwreck) and heard her sweet voice and I thought she was pretty cool. I’m not ready to commit to watching Room yet. I feel like we’re not there yet in our relationship, we haven’t reach the point where I could watch a whole film with her in the lead, but we might get there some day…
And Trainwreck was a pretty fun watch. Could’ve used some serious trimming but still I’m keeping it as a potential slot filler for Best Original Screenplay because there’s not much to choose from.
I love that the idiots who jumped down my throat about timing with December awards… when i was clearly right. you can go on the Boston Society of Film Critics twitter page right now and they acknowledge the fact that a small group of them attended the screening the Hateful Eight and it was a problematic for the timing of their awards and that many film groups start deciding awards in early December and that screening access is difficult. the replies to their twitter posts are the same as mine: stop handing out awards in early december…. i rest my case!
Ed Lachman
Love & Mercy wins Use of Music
Mad Max: Fury Road wins Editing
If you refresh the page, you can see it.
wow thanks. But I posted this before the page was initially updated.
If spotlight doesn’t sweep here something is seriously wrong
I hope MMFR continues sweeping so we have MMFR vs Martyian race. Sorry but screw Spotlight. Dramas like that won in the past. This is the year of sci fi.
MMFR is not a Sci-Fi, it’s an action film set in a Post-Apocalyptic world.
Post-apocalyptic = sci fi. So is distopian.
Hey fishnets:)))- I’ll just have taken MMFR at odds of 100:1 and 50:1 to win BP also – just to be safe.
As I see a battle between “THE MARTIAN” VS. “MMFR”….my bookies in UK are going wild –
b.r. ::)
“Voted to eliminate “Best Use of Music” in favor of “Best Original Score.” Now discussing our Animation Award’s parameters.”
https://twitter.com/thebsfc
That’s a start I can agree with! Go on Boston!
Also I see they even admit to being one of those “these don’t count because they haven’t seen such and such” critics awards!
It was either this or go on a fishing boat with several severely attractive Nicaraguan young men. Looks like I chose well…again. Ugh.
We want you to remain entertained, Bryce. Let us know what that entails.
Off Topic: We failed you miserably when you asked for Kindle recommendations for your long flight a couple of days ago. I’m sure you found something on your own. I’m curious to hear what book you chose.
I chose A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James … 2/3’s into it and I couldn’t recommend it anymore. I’m Perfectly alright friend, you know how much I enjoy this :p
Hi Ryan, how about a NESPRESSO, what else ? :))) b.r. from Vienna!
…and they pick a bunch of 50 year old Beach Boys songs as an “ORIGINAL score”?
Talk about tone deaf…….
