Vikander for Ex Machina is the only acceptable Vikander supporting nomination. Mara should win over Vikander if she gets nominated for Danish Girl though. Inside Out come for BP ! YES!!
Who thought Trainwreck was funnier than Spy or just like funny ?! The rise of Trainwreck is the weirdest thing this awards season.
One of the pet peeves I have about Spotlight is evident in that photo. Contrary to the popular image, almost all high-end journalists are freakishly clean-desk people.
Yes! Three cheers for middlebrow mediocrity! Go Mediocrity, Go!
Leo and Sly should be making room on their mantels for an Oscar.
Just watched The Revenant! Leo is more than deserving of every accolade he receives!
Leooo!
Wow, that’s weird : St. Louis and the most recent before them (Las Vegas) pretty much picked the same winners in the 8 main categories, with one exception (supporting actress). Anyway, if critics groups are to be believed, Spotlight, McCarthy, Larson, DiCaprio, Vikander, Stallone and in script Spotlight and Room, are the frontrunners in the 8 main categories : http://awardscorner.blogspot.hu/2015/12/awards-chart-2015.html
Emphasis on IF considering around this time last year Boyhood, Linklater, Cotillard, Keaton, Arquette, Simmons and in script Birdman and Gone Girl were the strongest right out of the gate and though Simmons, Arquette and the Birdman script did go on to win, Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl) wasn’t even nominated and adapted went to Graham Moore (The Imitation Game), who barely had any presence during the critics groups phase just like eventual winners Julianne Moore and Eddie Redmayne : http://awardscorner.blogspot.hu/2014/12/awards-chart-2014.html
Long story short : we know nada until the guilds start talking. SAG has already given us a glimpse of what the industry sentiment may support this season, we’ll see the rest soon enough.
Critics seem to like Room more than audiences. The film’s box office is dismal compared to that of Carol, Spotlight and Brooklyn.
Who wants to spend their free time watching a movie about being kidnapped and raped repeatedly?
Wow, seriously?
You obviously haven’t seen Room. Don’t comment on it until you have
Brooklyn, Spotlight and Carol looked way better made to me atleast.
”Brooklyn” has been featured on more ”end of year” lists and critics’ polls compared to ”Room”.
I’m yet to see Spotlight, but it’s just so weird it’s winning (almost) every BP, BOS, and some BD awards, yet no acting or any tech awards.
Well Spotlight isn’t a tech type film though I think it’s set design is underestimated. Not sure why it’s not getting acting awards but it may be because a lot of the parts have equal weight. Michael Keaton did get a best actor award though he seems supporting to me.
This looks like last month’s awards.
Fox Searchlight needs to step up their campaign for Ronan. She deserves more wins. I hope she gets the BAFTA.
Saoirse has won plenty of critics’ awards and various other awards.
I think “plenty” is a bit of an exaggeration. And Larson keeps being touted as the frontrunner by a lot of pundits.
I think this is going to be the showdown of the season – they seem pretty equal in terms of award wins! I would be happy with either one, personally!
They’re not equal. According to my award count, Larson has twice as many as Ronan
Larson has won 9 awards for room to Ronan’s 8 – so far….they are keeping up with each other….
I favor Ronan but I think American Academy voters are going to go for Larson. Wish I were more optimistic.
And the winner is … Charlotte Rampling!
OK, which were Saoirse Ronan’s 8 awards? Because I only counted 5: NYFCC, Boston Online, Washington, San Francisco and Detroit. And with today’s Nevada win, I counted 11 for Larson. Also, I’ve been following the film awards through Metacritic, and their overall standings tables agree…
Never mind, I’ve read a previous post in this section.
These critics’ awards aren’t a who wins all the awards indicator especially with BA. Not an exaggeration-Ronan has won three of the more “prestigious” awards: NYFCC, WAFCA, & San Francisco. Won BOFCA. Runner-up LAFCA, NYFCO, St Louis, Indiewire, and various others. Won: Hollywood Film Award, SBIFF, PSIFF, BIFA, Village Voice Critics’ Poll Best Actress. Likely wins BAFTA, Critics Choice and Oscar!!!
She absolutely will win the BAFTA just like Carey Mulligan (An Education) did. Also, Ronan could be still the industry favourite for all we know : previous nominee in an immensely likeable, critically acclaimed indie moneymaker. Usually a solid combination. Especially if the film makes the cut in BP that could mean the kind of widespread support that could help her win. I guess we’ll know more after PGA how much industry support this “little indie that could” has.
Saoirse has been previously nominated for 2 BAFTAs; one for best supporting actress and one for best actress, so I feel she may win in Feb. ”Brooklyn” producers and Saoirse are previous BAFTA winners and previous nominee; producers are former PGA nominees; and producers and Saoirse are AMPAS members and are both former nominees-all works in their favor!!
Totally. I am yet to see a FYC ad for Brooklyn.
Sasha had a FYC ad for ”Brooklyn” as background for this website. Seen them on Deadline and various others.
Wouldn’t it be nice if Alicia got an Oscar nom for Ex Machina? Too bad the chances of that happening are slim, all because of a category fraud pushing her in for The Danish Girl…
Hopefully she can get both. Lead and Supporting.
And another Vikander win for Ex Machina
Stallone vs Rylance is officialy happening
I’d put my money on Stallone. I imagine that ”Bridge of Spies” will do better with the Academy than the critics. So far, Rylance is the only one getting any attention for that movie. But David Poland at Movie City News writes: ”What is the giant sucking sound in the middle of the film? Mark Rylance, who should be a mortal lock to win Best Supporting Actor, but has been on stage in the UK and not in LA doing anything. And now, his shoulda-been-easy win is a shoulder-shrugger for many. The performance didn’t change. The guy–a genius who steals the movie–just hasn’t shown up. You get nominated that way.”
Another Stallone win
On the day the Golden Globes were announced, Dave Karger of Fandango tweeted: ”Today is Sylvester Stallone’s first Globe nod in 39 years. He did, however, have 29 Razzie nominations in the meantime.” … If Oscar voters embraced the ”McConnaisance,” doesn’t Stallone have an even better comeback narrative?
DiCaprio should win easly right? No Fassbender, i dont think guys like Attah and McKellen are a threat and they like Revenant. I guess only Damon could upset him
I think so. Fassbender is the only threat, but steve jobs is a movie that is not strong as the revenant. And I still don’t belive in a nomination for Damon.
Im talking about St Louis critics awards but agreed with you about oscars
On Thursday, David Poland at Movie City News wrote: ” ‘Steve Jobs’ is still my personal favorite of the season… but Universal has bailed on it since it crashed going wide. You would never know they were still in the race. Of course, they don’t have Michael Fassbender to parade around.”
Bryan Cranston in ”Trumbo” is DiCaprio’s bigger threat. It’s a hammy performance, but playing a Hollywood writer victimized by the studios plays well among Hollywood and SAG voters.
I felt like Trumbo was too much like a TV movie. I do wonder if Cranston will make the final 5 cut for the Oscar.
I couldn’t agree more: ”Trumbo” IS too much of a TV movie. Full of closeups that’ll play well on screeners on TV. Plus, there’s that dumbed-down script with the black-and-white cartoon characters. In case the blacklist is too hard to understand, Trumbo’s daughter in the film asks, ”Daddy, are you a Communist?” And Trumbo gives her a kind of simpleton answer.
why is the Internet determined to spoil The Revenant for everyone who hasn’t seen it yet? I shouldn’t have read that Best Scene award , sigh.
Hmm… I gather you haven’t watched the trailer, then? Or read about it anywhere. Good on you, but for the rest of the universe that hardly qualifies as a spoiler.
I avoid watching trailers that give away key scenes in a movie that I’m
already interested in seeing anyways because of the talent involved. I would have appreciated to be surprised by the bear attack rather than seeing it shown to me in promotional photos. I like to read about films that I have seen and join that discussion after the fact. but I guess they want to sell the movie to an audience that is disinterested in being surprised.
Yeah, well, I kind of admire your stance, but it’s the age of the internet… Surprises aren’t what they used to be…
ME AND EARL and the DYING Girl was a comedy? That’s even more ridiculous than calling THE MARTIAN a comedy a la the Golden Globes!
http://www.stlfilmcritics.org/awards/
Here are the nominees, for anyone interested. No Carol for Best Film.
That’s pretty much de rigeur by now tho…
Lubezki’s second win in a row!
About a half hour into the hateful eight. The score is hauntingly beautiful …well deserved. ..but why do I absolutely hate every last person in this cast..I think that’s the point right lol
Even jackson’s character?
Im now halfway through it. I don’t want to spoil anything. It’s so effing long I have to keep taking breaks and doing other things. I suppose jackson is the most decent. JJL whoaaaa…she’s deserving of a nom but good god what a trip. ..goes back to watching lol
Aloha wasnt that bad. Not even close bad to Fantastic four….lack of good plot but still nice actress in it like McAdams or Stone
If ”Aloha” is eligible for anything, it might be for: Best Apology of a Director for Casting. Cameron Crowe for ”Aloha”: He offered a ”heartfelt apology” for casting Emma Stone as Allison Ng, a half-Pacific Islander character in his movie, and said he was now inspired to tell more stories of racial diversity.
Worst Explanation of a Director for Casting (2014): Ridley Scott for ”Exodus: Gods & Kings.” In face of criticism of his nearly all-white casting in his biblical epic in Egypt, he said: ”I can’t mount a film of this budget, where I have to rely on tax rebates in Spain, and say my lead actor is Mohammed so-and-so from such-and-such. I’m just not going to get it financed. So the question doesn’t even come up.”
Getting a jump on next year’s Apology of a Director for Casting: Alex Proyas for ”Gods of Egypt,” which opens in February. He just apologized for casting Gerard Butler and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Egyptian gods. Proyas admitted his casting should have been more diverse and Lionsgate pledged to do better.
Screw the apologies AFTER the fact. Consider casting actors of color BEFORE you film.
Inside Out score is so good. Deserved runner up, should be easly nominated at oscars
