HBO’s Vinyl wasn’t the smash hit everyone thought it would be. How will Emmy react?
ADTV’s Megan McLachlan has a tortured, tangled history with HBO’s newest prestige drama, Vinyl. Produced and directed in part by Martin Scorsese, Vinyl is an impressionistic journey into the meltdown of Richie Finestra (Emmy-winner Bobby Cannavale) as he negotiates the 70s era record industry. With support from Olivia Wilde (Tron: Legacy) and Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond), Cannavale cokes rages his way through the scenery.
Think of it as Mad Men for the music biz. Just, in Megan’s opinion, a chaotic mess.
But that doesn’t mean the Television Academy will completely ignore Vinyl. While it’s not likely to crack the top seven Drama Series nominees, the Scorsese production seems poised to follow in the steps of its arguable better predecessor Boardwalk Empire. Nominations for Cannavale and a host of tech categories are all but ensured.
