Preparing For The Oscars

Saturday, November 12, 2016 , Governors Awards

Thursday, January 5, 2017,  Nominations voting opens (December 30 last year)

Friday, January 13, 2017, Nominations voting closes (January 8 last year)

Tuesday, January 24, 2017, Oscar Nominations Announcement  (January 14 last year)

Saturday, January 28, 2017, Producers Guild Awards

Saturday, February 4, 2017, DGA Awards (February 6 last year)

Monday, February 6, 2017, Oscar Nominees Luncheon

Monday, February 13, 2017, Finals voting opens (February 12 last year)

Tuesday, February 21, 2017, Finals voting closes (February 23 last year)

Oscar Sunday, February 26, 2017, 89th Academy Awards (February 28 last year)

Last year, the time between final ballots opening and closing was 11 days. This year, it’s down to 8, shortening it by 3 days.  The nominating window is roughly the same time, a short window of 8 days. I believe the nominating time should be longer and the winning time shorter because people do not have time to watch everything before putting down their nominations. One week is simply not long enough, considering most of them don’t watch all of the films.
