ACE Eddie Preview – Can it Clarify Anything We Don’t Already Know?

It is expected that La La Land will easily win the editing prize in Musical/Comedy when the Editors Guild gathers tomorrow night at 9 pm Pacific to hand out its awards for 2016. It’s in the drama category where things could get interesting. The nominees in drama are:

BEST EDITED FEATURE FILM (DRAMATIC):

Arrival
Joe Walker, ACE

Hacksaw Ridge
John Gilbert, ACE

Hell or High Water
Jake Roberts

Manchester by the Sea
Jennifer Lame

Moonlight
Nat Sanders, Joi McMillon

I suspect this could be the first potential test for which film is strongest with the guilds. Only Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight are nominated across all guilds – SAG Ensemble/WGA/ACE Eddie/DGA/Oscar. But between the two, only Moonlight has an Oscar nomination for editing. Still, if you take Best Picture off the table, any of these could win.

What will get my attention is if Moonlight wins this. If it then goes on to win the SAG Ensemble you will see a genuine threat to La La Land, which should take the PGA and the DGA. If Moonlight wins with 6,000 or so editors, that tells you it really does have crossover appeal within the industry and not just the love of film critics. Moonlight’s only miss so far was Best Director for BAFTA but Spotlight missed there too last year, and even missed an Eddie nod and still won.

I’m thinking it might be down to Moonlight vs. Hacksaw. Whichever one wins is likely the stronger Best Picture contender according to history:
