Both Hidden Figures and La La Land are making bank at the box office, and are both female led (for the most part), which La La Land at $133 million and Hidden Figures at $142 million. It will easily hit $150, as might La La Land if it has a great weekend in a week. Lion is also doing well. Word of mouth is pushing it to $36 million. Fences at $55 million, and Moonlight rising at $21 million.
The success of Hidden Figures is something to celebrate – to celebrate the importance of people who devote their life to science, and a film about the importance of women who are central to their families, the workplace and American history.
When the story of 2016 is told, we should remember that ticket buyers showed Hollywood what kind of stories they’re interested in seeing. Let’s hope Hollywood is listening.
