‘Versace’ Gets a Dark, Sexy Trailer

The trailer for the second installment of Ryan Murphy’s American Crime Story has dropped.

There is a certain sunny look to the second season of Ryan Murphy’s true crime limited series, The Assassination of Gianni Versace. The second season is mainly set in Miami in the mid-90’s so it has a decadent, dangerous air to it despite everything being so glamorous and sexy.

Darren Criss is about to break the hearts of many Glee fans in his portrayal of Andrew Cunanan, the man who murdered at least five people, including fashion icon Gianni Versace. The series will reportedly begin with the killing of Versace on the steps of his Miami Beach home and go backwards to explore Cunanan and the other men he killed.

The opulence in this trailer is through the roof. If the series is as gorgeous as this teaser suggests, Murphy’s creative team is sure to grab nominations for Production Design, Cinematography, and, duh, Costume Design. There’s a shot of slow-motion doves flying around his coffin for fashion’s sake!

Another strong showing from this teaser was Penelope Cruz as Gianni’s sister, Donatella. We only see her in the early stages of grief but her Italian accent and her deepened voice could indicate a strong performance from the Oscar-winner. Can you imagine her decked out in Versace gowns for all the awards shows?!

The biggest question mark is the characterization of Cunanan. I’ve been vocal about how anxious I am to see what Murphy does with the material and how Cunanan is portrayed. Cunanan was a charming person who could weasel his way into people’s lives (a sort of modern day Tom Ripley), but will the series sexualize him too much to make him sympathetic?

What did you think of the trailer? Excited for Penelope? Should it be more opulent?

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story debuts on January 17, 2018.
