There aren’t many movies this year that help to carve a path towards a better future for humanity, but somehow Alexander Payne’s Downsizing does just that. It deceptively forces us to examine a life built on materialism, where we would do anything to be able to keep all of the stuff we buy even if it means shrinking ourselves way down. In a humorous way, Payne’s film examines our collective fear (those of us paying attention, anyway) to how our world is about to become uninhabitable for us and other living things. It’s a wild wide, for sure, and takes you on expected turns but Downsizing is wholly original, and features one of the best performances of the year, Hong Chau.
