The Children Act, written by Ian McEwan and directed by Richard Eyre will open in September after debuting on DirecTV the month before, presumably to draw in Direct-TV users who might want to catch the film earlier. Either way, her performance was well reviewed back in September of 2017 when the film hit the Toronto Film Fest. It’s finally getting a release in the fall for this year’s Oscar race, though we have no idea whether the Best Actress race will be as crowded as it was. Thompson is one of the all time greats.
You can watch The Children Act exclusively on DIRECTV August 16 and in Theaters September 14.
Dame Emma is the best!
Dopo 25 anni da Howards End, 22 anni da Sense and Sensibilty e la snobbatura di Saving Mr Bans, Emma Thompson DEVE avere la nomination all’Oscar.
This is off topic, but shouldn’t Joaquin Phoenix be listed in your Best Actor contenders for You Were Never Really Here? I mean, he’s not gonna win, and probably won’t even be nominated, but he did win Best Actor for the film at Cannes last year.
I also find it odd that Sasha lists TWO Supp Actress contenders for Black Panther but no Michael B Jordan under Supp Actor.
I agree. Jordan was also more interesting in his performance than Boseman, who is named under Best Actor. However, the film is not going to receive any acting nods so it is all hypothetical.
Absolutely! So far this year, Phoenix, Hawke, Collette and Theron, imo, have given the best performances in the leading categories.
Also of note – to me anyway – is in the IMBD credits for The Children Act. It lists a music score by the great Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare in Love) and cinematography by the masterful Andrew Dunn (The Madness of King George). I’m even more jazzed than ever to see the movie now.
While Emma Thompson is no stranger to the Oscar circle of nominees and winners, I have always felt that she should have been nominated for Savings Mr. Banks and Nanny McPhee (Best Actress) and also for Brideshead Revisited (Best Supporting Actress).
What a range! I’m so anticipating “The Children’s Act” – and co-starring the underrated Stanley Tuccci too! I’ve been waiting for this movie for quite a while since its pre-production announcement. Glad to see it’s coming soon.
If the movie is shown first on DirecTV a month before it plays in a theater, doesn’t that disqualify it from Oscar consideration?
I hope not. That would be a shame. And why would they want to do that anyway? Why not show it on DirecTV after it plays in the theaters for Oscar consideration? Do the producers get more money by opening it cock-eyed? With a cast and crew like this film has, one would think they’d be plugging it for Oscar consideration. September is fall, after all, and we all know AMPAS tends to vote for movies released in the fall/winter months (as opposed to spring/summer). If releasing it on DirecTV doesn’t affect its eligibility, then I don’t care one way or another. But if it does, then this is a weird way to open a prestige project.
I’m in
Ian McEwan’s novel was excellent and I knew then that if the two central roles end up in the right hands, the result will be a couple of brilliant performances. Emma Thompson needs no introduction and she has been long overdue for an Oscar comeback (don’t even get me started on the 2013/2014 season) and Dunkirk-breakout Fionn Whitehead also seems to have the goods to pull this off. Can’t wait to see it!
