Alfonso Cuaron’s astonishing and personal film Roma takes the Golden Lion at Venice, while Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite wins the Grand Jury Prize. Here are the winners, via Variety:
Golden Lion: “Roma,” Alfonso Cuaron, U.S. Mexico
Grand Jury Prize: “The Favourite,” Yorgos Lanthimos, Greece, U.K.
Silver Lion for Best Director: Jacques Audiard, “The Sisters Brothers,” U.S.
Volpi Cup for Best Actress: Olivia Colman, “The Favourite,” Greece, U.K.
Volpi Cup for Best Actor: Willem Dafoe, “At Eternity’s Gate,” U.S.
Best Screenplay: Joel and Ethan Coen, “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” U.S.
Special Jury Prize: “The Nightingale” Jennifer Kent, Australia
Marcello Mastroianni Award for Young Performer: Baykali Ganambarr “The Nightingale,” Australia
I;m soooooooooooo happy for Colman & Dafoe!! They had both leaped up into the top 5 Best Actress/Actor race!!
I predicted tt Dafoe & the three ladies in The Favourite wld won the Volpis! I was technically right =)…Instead of following Berlin, by awarding the three great actresses a joint win for The Hours 15 yrs ago…Venice jury decided to award the best in show!! =)
I tink this win put Colman firmly in the Lead race now, Weisz, as many had alr predicted will be goin supp…but I still tink the studio will still campaign Stone under Lead? I’m surprise Award Daily consider her supp?? Afterall, she IS The Favourite in The Favourite, or is she?? Lol
Venice is useless for predicting Best Foreign Language Film nominations. English language films who win The Golden Lion usually get nominations in some category. Sometimes they win Cesar, maybe Goya nominations. They rarely predict best picture winners.
My bet for Foreign Film this year changes after this week…
Winner: Roma (Mexico)
Alternate (dark horse) : Campeones (Spain). Just saw it yesterday… *** 1/2 / C+ but it’s got everything that can give it an Oscar. Think a cross between Full Monty and Hoosiers but with non-actors with disabilities directed by a master and previous Oscar nominee (short film live action). It’s been a huge hit in Spain on all fronts and it basically stands out and has zero enemies.
Damn, wouldn´t it be amazing to see Dafoe and Colman winning at the Oscars?!
I just keep looking at it and thinking it would be interesting if Dafoe and Chalamet won this year, the year after they won all the critics awards and arguably should have won Oscars.
Just throwing this out there: if Roma had gone to Cannes as they had originally planned, would it have won the Palme?
QUICK OSCAR POLL:
What should I watch tonight?
A) Miami Vice (2006, Michael Mann)
B) Rules Don’t Apply (2016, Warren Beatty)
You can’t watch Miami Vice too many times.
Miami Vice without a doubt.
AHHHHHHHHHHH I’m super happy!!! Roma is a masterpiece, and it should go all the way to Best Picture.
I must say I’m really surprised by the anglophone choices of the jury.
Like all of the awards going for english speaking features. Not sure what I think about that.
English-speaking features like… Roma??
Sorry for this, I meant ALL the rest except for Roma main prize.
It is a bit outrageous, but it seems Venice is becoming less of a “cannes” and more of a “telluride” type of festival anyways.
So predictable.
Roma is leading the race with a star is born as the principal threat.
The favourite comes as a third option today and I guess first man comes after.
But wait for if a bale street could talk. I have hopes on that film.
Can we all agree that backseat will be again other boring movie about politics? 5 or 6 nominations and possible 0 wins.
Olivia Colman, we don’t know if she’ lead or supporting. But I think she have chances in both categories. She’s without a doubt a more strong actress than gaga, McCarthy, and Davis. She have more visibility than glenn close and her role is more attractive for all of us.
Natalie Portman could stop her momentum if vox lux finds a distributor this year, but Portman honey… The academy hates controversial films. You better go supporting.
