First the good news – that Paul Schrader’s First Reformed comes in with three – Feature, Screenplay and Actor for Ethan Hawke. The Favorite is also in with three, Feature, Screenplay and Ensemble Female Lead (easy way not to have to choose between the actresses, which makes it even more difficult to figure out how the three – Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz will go down, Oscars wise).
The disappointing news is the lack of love for BlackKklansman – the only nomination is for Adam Driver.
I for one am pleased that First Reformed got a boost. I think this might be enough to push it into some of the Oscars categories, like Screenplay and maybe Picture. Nice upticks for both Leave No Trace and Eighth Grade, two very worthy films that came out earlier this year. Chloe Zhao’s The Rider, which was floating around last year, is being held aloft by those who love it and keep trying to push it to the top to gain recognition. They have made an effort to be as inclusive as possible, specifically with women of color behind the camera.
The Gothams have, in Oscar’s recent past, been a decent enough indicator of how Best Picture might go. But since this year’s Oscars will likely be dominated by bigger budget and higher box office films like A Star is Born, there might not be as much as an overlap.

How do I dislike Ethan Hawke? Let me count the ways.
So this is more about inepdendent films?
“Films made with an economy of means. Budget level and sources of financing are taken into consideration during criteria review.” Says the Gotham site.
We usually take that to mean films with budgets less than $20 million.
I wish they’d reduce it to less than $10 million … or less than $5 million.
Very happy for Kathryn Hahn and Private Life. Great performance in a really good film.
Probably notable that Melissa McCarthy did not get a nomination for Can You Ever Forgive Me… (and neither did Nicole Holofcener’s screenplay)?
I’m not sure what Can You Forgive Me is? Does she still do the same old shtick
If Mellisa McCarthy can’t get a nomination here, I don’t see her getting one for Oscar. Hope this ends her campaign.
Hope this ends the Mellisa McCarthy campaign.
This sucks for BlackKklansman. Loved that movie, would’ve loved it to be a best picture contender. But fate had other plans.
On the bright side – Toni Colette for Hereditary gaining momentum is what I am hoping for.
This is where Toni is supposed to start getting recognition. Let’s see if it will push her to Golden Globe and the first critic awards…
I hope this won’t be the first and last for Michelle Pfeiffer mention in Best Actress.
Is the Gothams the awards for films with less than 20k budget or something or is that the Indie Spirit? I’m sorry to be confused by the two. I remember last there was a discussion when The Shape of Water mussed Gothams because its budget exceeded the limit for a film to be considered.
The Rider! Still my favourite film of the year so far.
Mine too!!
This is a dream of a lineup for Best Actress and this was a perfect day for Glenn Close. She got the nomination here and she was also announced as the recipient of The Hollywood Film Awards for Best Actress. She is now in the same position, with these 2 prizes / nominations, Julianne Moore was in 2014 for Still Alice. Sony Classics is an expert in campaingning and we can finally see Close winning her long and overdue Oscar.
these blow, bruh
Where is the very well deserving performance of Charlize Theron in Tully ? So 4 magazine collumnists decided on who to push and favor and closed eyes on some deserving performances McCarthy is also missing.
Just back from The Favourite. This will be a major Oscar player, and Colman is coming for that win.
But in which category? I feel like she’d be a lock for a nom and a major frontrunner for the win if they’d just campaign her in supporting, but in lead it’s all up in the air.
I hear she’s going lead. Sure, it’s not a done deal, but we would be fools to count her out.
OT: Just out of curiosity (because I like trivia), I took a look at all the people who have been nominated for the trifecta of Picture, Director, and Actor. There are nine of them. Assuming Bradley Cooper is also nominated for all three, then he has a…
1/9 chance of winning just Best Director (Warren Beatty, Reds)
1/9 chance of winning just Best Actor (Roberto Benigni, Life Is Beautiful)
1/9 chance of winning Picture and Actor (Laurence Olivier, Hamlet)
2/9 chance of winning none of them (Orson Welles, Citizen Kane; Warren Beatty, Heaven Can Wait)
4/9 chance of winning Picture and Director (Woody Allen, Annie Hall; Kevin Costner, Dances With Wolves; Clint Eastwood, Unforgiven; Clint Eastwood, Million Dollar Baby)
0/9 chance of winning all three
Exactly. We are on the same page I think.
Personally, I’m predicting him to go the unlikely Laurence Olivier route.
Agreed. I could see Picture and Actor. Can’t see Director except in a serious sweep (think it goes to Cuarón).
That sounds like one of the more plausible scenarios. (Although I am now – again, after having seen the movie – slightly less convinced about its picture chances. But I still see no others with better chances. Yet…)
I think 9 as a sample size is a little bit small to read too much into such a specific statistic with so much involved… I think you get that though considering you’re predicting the one that only 1 other person has done.
Oh I totally get that. Like I said, it’s merely trivia, just for fun. 🙂
2/9 of going home empty handed? That’s great odds for Cooper. He could also be nominated for screenplay. I think Best Actor is looking like his already.
Yeah, I meant to add Orson Welles didn’t go empty handed as he was co-nominated for screenplay and won it. So it’s actually, 1/9 of going home empty handed. It’s good odds for Cooper. Only has to avoid doing a Beatty.
I was just talking about the trio of Pic/Director/Actor. He has a 2/9 chance of winning none of those three.
I know that. I was just adding that one of the guys that didn’t win in one of those categories won an Oscar for screenplay. Or to put it another way, 8 out 9 who were nominated for those categories won an Oscar. Even though Orson Welles didn’t win in those categories, he still walked away with an Oscar. The stat applies that Cooper will only have avoid doing Beatty, who is the guy nominated in those categories to go home empty handed.
But, even though he might sneak in for a fourth nomination for screenplay, he won’t get the record of five because people fail to notice that Cooper didn’t write any of the songs that will be nominated from the film. Shallow for sure and then either I’ll Always Remember Us This Way or I’ll Never Love Again. And there is a possibility Maybe It’s Time could get s nom which is a Cooper sung song, but it was written solo by Jason Isbell.
Those were my four favorite songs in the movie. 🙂 It’s great if those four are really the ones most likely to be nominated.
http://gph.is/Z5SBTA
Great stuff! (I don’t think he wins director. I’d give him actor, coming off having just seen the movie – and without having too many other performances truly in the running to compare his with…)
Roma is conspicuous by its absence !
Gothams do plaster American all over their voting criteria so that might’ve put people off. Plus they may have thought it’s such a Juggernaut that it doesn’t need the help?
Juggernaut is not a word that I’d use to describe ROMA .. tortoise sounds more appropriate
It’s basically the film that film critics are all talking about this year (a star is Born is the film that people in general are talking about but film critics are all over Roma) and from an awards perspective almost everyone who predicts Oscars for a living has it in 1 or 2 for best picture. That’s what I meant by Juggernaut -it’s away got the discussion so it really doesn’t need the publicity.
Its true that film critics love Roma and are cheer leading for it but the typical voter is not that much of a movie purist and lover of cinematic art ..they’ll never go for it as BP winner , NEVER !
I’d imagine the feature/screenplay jury probably didn’t feel it was apporpriate to nominate the film for the Gothams
Why wasn’t it eligible ?
Only American films are eligible. And it wasn’t necessarily even ineligible, it might have just not been a priority or “right for these awards” because it’s not showcasing American independent filmmaking as strongly
MICHELLE PFEIFFER!!! =D
Really, the following 10 films made the biggest impression with more than one mention in each case:
– The Favourite (Feature, Screenplay, Jury Award for Ensemble Performance)
– First Reformed (2017) (Feature, Actor, Screenplay)
– If Beale Street Could Talk (Feature, Breakthrough Actor) [*missed Screenplay*]
– Madeline’s Madeline (Feature, Breakthrough Actor)
– Hereditary (Actress, Breakthrough Director)
– Private Life (Actress, Screenplay)
– Support the Girls (Actress, Screenplay)
– Leave No Trace (Actor, Breakthrough Actor)
– Eighth Grade (Breakthrough Director, Breakthrough Actor) [*missed Screenplay*]
– Sorry to Bother You (Breakthrough Director, Breakthrough Actor)
Pretty great list overall. I wasn’t high on Hereditary and was a bit more lukewarm on If Beale Street Could Talk and Eighth Grade than others (3 stars out of 4), but I really liked or loved the others.
In terms of other “glaring” omissions for Oscar contenders:
– Can You Ever Forgive Me? [*missed Feature, Actress, Screenplay*]
– ROMA [*missed Feature, Screenplay*]
– BlacKkKlansman [*missed Feature, Screenplay*]
If you replace Madeline’s Madeline with Eighth Grade, then Best Picture would’ve been perfect! Thrilled for First Reformed and and Hawke.
Ben Foster is going lead so glad that he got nominated.
Loved the mention of Kathryn Hahn – such a great performance.
Elsie Fisher and Thomasin McKenzie were brilliant – hope one of them can win.
Knew called it and figured Toni Collette would rack up a lot of precursors.. don’t care when her movie was released too big of a performance to ignore..let’s see if it sticks!
Hoping against all odds that this legitimately launches Toni Collette into further awards conversation. She’s brilliant
Gut Predictions:
Screenplay: First Reformed
Feature: The Favourite
Actress: Collette
Actor: Hawke
Breakthrough Actor: Fisher
Breakthrough Director: Fox
Breakthrough Series: Killing Eve
Yes, yes, so happy for Collette!!!!!!
Breakthrough Actor
Yalitza Aparicio in Roma (Netflix)
Elsie Fisher in Eighth Grade (A24)
Helena Howard in Madeline’s Madeline (Oscilloscope Laboratories)
KiKi Layne in If Beale Street Could Talk (Annapurna Pictures)
Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie in Leave No Trace (Bleecker Street)
Would be happy if that were the Oscar lineup.
“But since this year’s Oscars will likely be dominated by bigger budget and higher box office films like A Star is Born, there might not be as much as an overlap.”
??? Based on what Sasha say this? Stop making higher budget films happen.
Michelle Pfeiffer!!
Where Is Kyra? is criminally underrated.
Also, Bradford Young (who also shot Solo: A Star Wars Story) at least deserves another Best Cinematography mention.
I know! Young’s Cinematography work for Where is Kyra? is also one of my favorite and probably the best this year.
Madeline’s Madeline needed this. Thank you everyone who voted for it.
Also really happy for The Rider and First Reformed.
I had not heard of it, I assume it’s worth checking out then? (I too am stoked for first reformed and the rider which are both excellent)
I’d argue that it’s the second best American movie of the year so far (after You Were Never Really Here): it’s a perfect mix of a daring structure, truly unique audiovisual storytelling, complex ideas and a rare amount of energy that makes the film feel alive in a truly exhilirating way.
First Reformed and Hawke get the best boost. Foster increased his chances. The Favourite and the 3 actresses are confirmed. Close is a lock. Beale Street and Roma are in. King is in for Beale Street, Grant and Driver almost in.
Perhaps we shouldn’t be calling locks because of the Gotham nominations
Agreed. Cause if we do that then there goes BlackKKlansman’s chances. And I know a lot of people were leaning toward it even though they say ASIB is peaking too early and BK is almost on video now and will be long forgotten by Oscartime.
I really liked BlacKKKlansman but I think it came out too early. I don’t think it’s gonna make the best pic lineup come Oscar morning. Hope I’m wrong though.
After an analysis of previous years with the Gotham Awards, here are my predictions of what will continue on to the Oscars. Usually in years past, there’s been anywhere from 1-3 ‘Features’ that have gone on to picture. Also — since the Gothams introduced Actor, Actress and Ensemble, there’s been anywhere from 3-6 actors that are nominated for Gotham acting/ensemble awards that continue on to specific acting categories at the Oscars. Predictions of what will carry through to Oscars:
Oscar Best Picture:
The Favourite (Gotham Best Feature)
If Beale Street Could Talk (Gotham Best Feature)
Oscar Best Actress:
Glenn Close – The Wife (Gotham Best Actress)
Olivia Colman – The Favourite (Gotham Ensemble Award)
KiKi Layne – If Beale Street Could Talk (Gotham Breakthrough Actor — side note — I think she’s being dramatically underrated and will be a big surprise this awards season)
Oscar Best Supporting Actress:
Emma Stone – The Favourite (Gotham Ensemble Award)
Rachel Weisz – The Favourite (Gotham Ensemble Award)
Oscar Best Supporting Actor:
Richard E. Grant – Can You Ever Forgive Me? (Gotham Best Actor)
CURRENT OSCAR PREDICTIONS (October 18th, 2018):
PICTURE:
A Star Is Born
Blackkklansman
Black Panther
The Favourite
First Man
Green Book
If Beale Street Could Talk
Roma
Widows
DIRECTOR:
Damien Chazelle – First Man
Bradley Cooper – A Star Is Born
Alfonso Cuaron – Roma
Barry Jenkins – If Beale Street Could Talk
Spike Lee – Blackkklansman
LEAD ACTRESS:
Glenn Close – The Wife
Olivia Colman – The Favourite
Viola Davis – Widows
Lady Gaga – A Star Is Born
KiKi Layne – If Beale Street Could Talk
LEAD ACTOR:
Bradley Cooper – A Star Is Born
Willem Dafoe – At Eternity’s Gate
Viggo Mortensen – Green Book
Robert Redford – The Old Man & The Gun
John David Washington – Blackkklansman
SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
Amy Adams – Vice
Claire Foy – First Man
Regina King – If Beale Street Could Talk
Emma Stone – The Favourite
Rachel Weisz – The Favourite
SUPPORTING ACTOR:
Mahershala Ali – Green Book
Timothee Chalamet – Beautiful Boy
Sam Elliott – A Star Is Born
Richae E. Grant – Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Michael B. Jordan – Black Panther
So has there been many films that were eligible for Gotham and didn’t get a feature nomination but then did get an Oscar one? Cause I see you still have BlackkKlansman listed on your predictions.
A few recent ones:
Lady Bird
Hell or High Water
Room
Whiplash
Dallas Buyers Club
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Thanks. That’s quite a few.
No way does Washington get in Best Actor when he couldn’t even get in the Gotham Best Actor category over Driver who is really the Supporting Actor (which he could show up at the Oscars in that category but then you don’t have him there). Also, no way does Panther, Klansman, Widows and Beale Street all get on. I would say two of those at the most. I think your director picks are pretty sharp though and I could even see Spike Lee get a director nom without a Picture nom for the film. It’s happened before.
“Also, no way does Panther, Klansman, Widows and Beale Street all get on. I would say two of those at the most.”
Gee, I wonder why you picked those specific films?
I think Collette and Aparicio have a better shot than Layne.
Ethan Hawke has an outside chance for best actor too.
And maybe Adam Driver will get in.
Biggest omissions (in terms of what it might mean for their Oscar chances):
• Melissa McCarthy in Actress and CYEFM in Screenplay
• BlacKkKlansman in Feature, Screenplay
• Roma in Feature, Screenplay
• Beale Street in Screenplay
• Eighth Grade in Screenplay
Eighth Grade is the only one that was hurt.
How was BlackkKlansman not hurt? It can’t even get nominated against a bunch of indie movies and yet it’s gonna do well against the whole crop of Oscar movies?
We’re talking about 5 critics voting. This doesn’t mean anything
Gotham doesn’t overlap with Academy except by accident. It boosts “The Favourite” and “First Reformed”. That’s all. Big Oscar contenders are there.
No, it means absolutely nothing at all. They just boost one or two films but that’s it.
Why is Roma only in Breakthrough Actor? was it elegible for everything else?
Maybe there’s confusion on whether it was eligible or not among selection committees. Most of the selection committees probably thought Roma was ineligible, but the selection committee for Breakthrough Actor did, so Yalitza Aparicio got nominated. On the other hand, maybe Roma just wasn’t on their top 5?
Anyway this was one of the criteria: “Films must be American. The film must be directed and/or produced by (a credited lead producer; i.e.“produced by”) a US born or based filmmaker. The film must be directed and/or produced (credited lead producers) by a US born or based filmmaker.”
“Roma” is a foreign film. I don’t understand how Aparicio got nominated if her film is ineligible. Perhaps breakthrough actor is little different from the other categories and made her eligible?
No. The criteria are the same for all competitive awards.
The Favourite, First Reformed and Beale Street could be in the talk for Best Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay.
First Reformed is Original.
The Favourite is in Original Screenplay.
