Just read on variety that The Favourite is ineligible for the WGA
This most certainly gives First Reformed, Roma, Green Book and Vice an a chance.
Roma is also ineligible – foreign films are never eligible there.
Say what?
For some odd reason I thought Pan’s Labyrinth was nominated
🙂 Nope, not for the WGA…

22 July
22 July is gripping, fantastic… still, it left me unsatisfied to give a five star rating. It is a “should see”, but I don’t think it’s a “must see”. It’s a difficult watch, specially in the first third, and it’s successful in not making a crazy mass murder, an appealing star. I have to say, that first third, is more terrifying than all Friday the 13th films combined. Because you know it’s real.
ST. Louis Film Critics Association revealed their nominations. Glenn Closed scored another nomination. Things are starting to get better for Close. Today she won her first critics group.

It looks like consensus among critics has been built around Regina King and, to a lesser extent, Roma and Richard E. Grant. Steven Yeun has suddenly been thrust into the conversation, as well; while it’s unlikely he’ll get a nod, at least his success with some critics awards adds a little intrigue to the conversation. The LA critics were quite pro-Asian this year, with Yeun, Burning, Minding the Gap, Bing Liu, Shirkers, and Chloe Zhao all receiving recognition from them.
first review on vice and is….not that good

We certainly have a critic’s favorite this year. Looking forward to seeing the film on Friday.

That’s a heck of a lot of first place votes for Roma and Cuaron. So how does that translate to academy voters?
They probably help a great deal with securing the nominations. The actual winning the Oscar bit will come down to how it will fare with the guilds and Bafta aka the precursors with overlapping voting bodies with the Academy.
how many critics associations are there in the US??
25+ is my guess.
Isn’t it amazing how the critics groups are almost all going with Ethan Hawke, and yet after the Golden Globe snub last Thursday has almost no chance of winning the Oscar? Great actor! Don’t mean that disrespectfully, just being realistic.
Melissa McCarthy – Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Great pick. She was outstanding. Hopefully she gets a push real soon.
yawn. so overrated
I want that fifth slot for Pike, so brilliant A Private War.
Best Director – Alfonso Cuaron – Roma
Sweeping up nicely.
Roma wins Cinematography
How wild would that be for Cuaron to win a possibly two technical oscars without screenplay/director/picture.
He might have a great morning day Oscars announce.
What are the chances of Yalitza Aparicio?
Richard E. Grant for supporting actor
One of my favorite supporting actor performances easily. He was top notch.
What do we have here
*eats popcorn* *sips drink* *takes front row seat* oh, what a lovely sunday!
