The Golden Globes will happen, for better or worse, on Sunday — though we still don’t really know which direction the ship is going to head in until we hear from the PGA, at least in terms of Best Picture. The Globes might be a better indicator of the acting categories than anything else. It does seem like one of the Best Actress winners is going to win the Oscar, maybe the same goes for lead actor.
We know Bradley Cooper will win a Globe — we just don’t know which ones or how many he will win. By all accounts, this appears to be A Star Is Born’s big night, but I will caution that it is missing a screenplay nomination. While films have won the Globe without having a screenplay nom, it certainly helps. If A Star Is Born was in Musical/Comedy, its win would be a no-brainer. Its win still might be a no-brainer, but there is also the chance that something else will win in Drama.
Don’t forget to enter our contest!

I just realised that Nicole Kidman
– is up for a Golden Globe for Destroyer
– is up for a Critics Choice for Boy Erased, for which she has just won the AACTA
– is in the No1 movie in the world atm that is about to blow past the 1B mark (Aquaman)
– is in the crowdpleaser The Upside that will be released next week to potentially good numbers.
– has the much-anticipated second season of Big Little Lies coming up in a few months
– has two flashy supporting roles in high-profile pics (The Goldfinch, Roger Ailes pic) already in the can
So my thoughts on this : 1. hot damn, you go girl! 2. damn when does she SLEEP ?
I’ve predicted Melissa McCarthy to win Best actress here at the GG. This is where these things happen. Huppert is a great example.
Malek has Best Actor in the bag. Most astonishing performance.
Also predicted Rachael Weisz for supporting actess (could actually go to Stone after an astonishingly fine performance) – I think one of the favourite’s get it.
And Roma for Screenplay, director and Foreign film.
Have you also predicted Colman? In that case, wouldn’t two acting wins warrant a screenplay win for The Favourite? Or do you think Roma is basically unbeatable wherever it shows up?
Yes I have predicted Coleman. I think The Favourite could win best screenplay but think Roma was the most supreme and will win it.
But Huppert was in a foreign language film, and Portman had won two Globes for film in the past. That’s not the best example in my opinion McCarthy’s performance was solid, but it won’t stand out among the five as the best.
You never know. It’s probably Gaga’s night but I wouldn’t be suprised if there’s a shock here.
I like that Huppert GG win picture so MUCH!
Oh wow, I only now realized that wasn’t P Clarkson in that pic!!!
Well she finally won a GG last night! The next pic should be of her !
Kinda sad Sharp Objects left pretty much empty handed (happy Clarkson won though!) and Amy won in neither of the categories she was nominated in. Reminds me of when Moore was nominated twice at the Oscars for Best Actree and Best Supporting Actress and left empty handed. 🙁
Amy should’ve won the Best Supporting instead of King imo. Can’t say about the other category because I haven’t seen Arquettes performance.
Imagine what would happen if Gaga doesn’t win Actress tomorrow. I’d like the name of a nominee like Nicole Kidman or Melissa Mccarthy be heard and everyone go “Wait, what?” I know it’s not happening but why can’t we have moments like this in awards shows anymore? Love these things. Kate Winslet’s win for Steve Jobs or Taylor Johnson for Nocturnal Animals. Perfection.
Yeah, but that’s in the supporting categories. The lead? It’s between Gaga and Close.
They awarded Gaga for AHS when no one else did. They are giving her the win this year.
I think her speech is going to be extremely important to the rest of the season. She needs to nail it.
Yeah, they starf*ked her once. Will they feel the urge to do it again?
If you think the HFPA is going to pass on an opportunity to award a person like Lady Gaga an acting award in a very popular film and deny themselves and everyone that moment, then you don’t know how the HFPA roles!
I know GG. If I had to put money on bets, I would predict Gaga. It’s just a question, a discussion.
I get it. Sorry, I was saying it with attitude to be funny. Like, “You don’t know how they role.” Didn’t mean to come across rude.
oops!
I’m fine to admit I was wrong!
Idk about the speech part, but I agree with you in that the HFPA will be awarding Gaga like they did for AHS (regardless of her performance). She’s going to win it, period.
She should just bust out the “99 people” speech. That one is well rehearsed at least 😀
I know man but how fun would it be if we had moments like this in the leading categories as well? It would make awards season so much more exciting. Oh, and btw, I’m rooting for Glenn so hard. Don’t believe anything other than Gaga is going to happen but whatever.
I agree surprises are so much more fun. We’re more likely to get them in the Globes, since it predates the SAGs and Oscars. Unfortunately, by the time the Oscars roll around everything is usually set in stone. There have only been a couple of real surprises — by which i mean, not the front runner or main competition for the front runner– in the lead actor and actress Oscars in the 2000s.
I think it’s a little silly when we complain about it being predictable/no surprises.
Don’t follow sites like this if you don’t want to know who’s going to win!
With all the talk on Best Foreign Film understandably centering around the almost certain winner the masterpiece ROMA and the Polish masterwork COLD WAR, I thought I’d at least mention that my wife and I weren’t expecting the humanist Lebanese CAPERNAUM (seen last night at Manhattan’s Film Forum) to end up as one of the most unforgettable films of the year. The director, Nadine Labaki fashioned a mostly somber tale of exceeding impoverishment and child neglect in a battle for survival on the streets that recalls DeSica and Bunuel’s “Los Olvidados”, but ends with a shattering extended freeze close-up that compellingly evokes Truffaut in a heartbreaking tale that leaves you emotionally scarred. Yeah it is a bit longer than it should be and there are a few dramatic missteps but overall this is a powerful statement and a film, once seen will be ingrained. The young unprofessional Syrian boy Zain Al Rafeea gives a childhood performance for the ages. Surprisingly I now see this film as one of the Ten Best of 2018 absolutely.
The Globes have surprised us with their choice for Foreign Film. But I doubt we will get a surprise this year, given that a foreign film, Roma, would normally be strong contender for Best Picture. It’s rare that one foreign film is as dominant as that.
I loved Ida, but I hear that reaction to Cold War is very mixed — some love it, and others think it is terrible. One should never judge a film from the trailer, but the trailer for Cold War is kinda pretentious.
I thought Cold War was terrible. Pretentious & pointless, including the ending.
At least it’s short.
Cold War is excellent. It’s not perfect like Ida, but it’s one of the best films of 2018.
The possibility of seeing both Lady Gaga winning Best Actress for ASIB at The Oscars and Rami Malek Best Actor for Bohemian Rhapsody (both by the way very good in their respective films, with Gaga being surprisingly even better, like far better than Malek) in a year of soooooo many exceptional performances for both categories by so many brilliant actors is a travesty. Like Gaga winning I sort of can handle. Malek is so meh to me I can’t. Both winning (which is how I feel it’s going to happen – and I’m predicting both to win tomorrow) is just “In your face, people who love art! We don’t give a shit about great performances, direction, etc., just politics, campaigns and narratives appealing enough to mainstream audiences”. We all know it goes this way but if indeed both Gaga and Malek are going to win, The Oscars are about to lose a large portion of the audience. AMPAS and all the pre-AMPAS shows are slowly but surely turning into more prestige versions of The People’s Choice Awards.
Gaga winning 2 oscar in the same night just not gonna happen, more i think about that more I’m convinced, oscar for best song and nominee is enough. Malek unfortunately seems it’s happening for real
Yes, I’ve said this a while back. Because the Oscars is all about the show (and less about the statues themselves), Oscar voters vote for who they and the world will see ON STAGE (except for of course the technical people, then they vote for the film). Gaga will be on stage accepting for Song. She will also be on stage to perform “Shallow”. They aren’t going to vote for her to be on stage for the THIRD time in the same evening.
She, in a sober estimation, is not *that* popular.
Depending on how much they like the film and wanna see it succeed.
Cuarón will be on stage two, likely four, possibly six times. Although one might argue that he is that popular, Gravity won 7 Oscars after all.
Whatever awards Cuaron might win, it will be for a film (that they like or not). With the acting categories the award is more for the person, a very visible individual. I’ve tried to draw that distinction below.
But, yes, you did bring up a good point. Cuaron is a beloved, highly respected auteur and he can be *that* popular with the AMPAS. So they might not mind seeing him up there, or even make history with him. I’m not predicting that, but I’d say that’s more possible than lavishing an upstart popstar Gaga with all the attention.
I spoke on this before. Too much love for a first timer but who knows
Gaga is actually already an Oscar nominee. For Best Song in the documentary film who’s name escapes me. She lost to Sam Smith’s James Bond track- for the 2015-16 show.
Sure was. Good one
It was The Hunting Ground. (and not to be a jerk, it’s also “whose” because you are not saying “who is name escapes me”)
I’d like to make a campaign to get Bohemian Rhapsody completely shut out lol. A film of so low artistic standards doesn’t deserve a single nomination in a year where we had such an abundance of incredible films and performances. Malek’s really good but inferior to a ridiculously long list of amazing performances turn included. Cooper should have it in the bag.
I agree that Gaga and Malek are pretty standard, but I don’t agree that the Oscars are becoming the People’s Choice Awards. Otherwise we would have saw the likes of The Wolf of Wall Street, American Sniper, The Revenant, Hidden Figures, and Get Out win the top award. Instead we got 12 Years a Slave, Birdman, Spotlight, Moonlight and The Shape of Water. All very eclectic, intimate films that are actually opposite of “People’s Choice Awards”. The preferential ballot, yes, changed that- But you have to remember the academy is still very small. About 6,000 members vs the 200k in SAG. If the academy was so “About Popularity”, they would have kept that dreadful Most Popular Film category. They didn’t.
And there’s nothing wrong with successful films being nominated. Many of the films in contention got strong reviews AND made money. What is wrong with that?? I would think thats a GREAT sign that audiences ARE into movies that aren’t just superhero junk. And Black Panther is a lot more unique then your standard superhero Marvel film (similar to the likes of Logan, which was an Adapted Screenplay nominee). The list of top contending films include A Star Is Born, Roma,
Blackkklansman, Black Panther, The Favourite, Vice and Green Book. All diverse movies. All with different box-office. And the academy won’t pick all of what we think. It’s a competitive year.
The academy has also gone years where Indies were the leaders of the pack. 1996 was the most recent in memory where the media noticed only one (1) best picture nominee came from a major studio- Jerry Maguire. The other nominees were The English Patient, Fargo, Shine and Secrets and Lies. Miramax (English Patient) was not as big in the mid 90s until Shakespeare in Love won and suddenly the Weinstein machine became very present. So the academy can go back and forth.
Isabelle Huppert, by the way, RECENTLY won the Golden Globe for Best Actress (Drama) in a foreign film. Over the likes of Natalie Portman, who everyone was basically predicting. So the Globes do not always go for the typical stars we assume. They actually go different directions. Not just in acting races. They gave Steve Jobs best screenplay, and then the movie wasn’t even NOMINATED for screenplay at the Oscars.
I like the Globes because they’re the first time we see just where the industry “might” be leaning. But we don’t know anything until after the guilds.
The GG have indeed become the People’s choice awards show.
Ok I backed up my statement with actual facts and my point of view. Where’s yours?
Pretty damn spot on your analysis except flaw in your argument is implying resentment toward genres of movies that never won before there more Oscar lose and entire awards season reputation to lose in publics eyes by the attitude to discriminate against sci-fi, comic book adaptation, fantasy …
to expand what your saying there is nothing wrong whatsoever with superhero film or science themed and sci-fi film winning big awards . black panther is much more than than just a superhero movie but in part that too. a win for that will turn around poor public perception that academy are a bunch of conflicted , divided snobby elitists and they actually give a shit bout what public are truly engaged in -for once
so Malek just won his first televisive award for AACTA, from 2012 they matched the oscar winner 5 times, they missed only for Keaton (who was so close to win oscar) and Ejiofor who won BAFTA. In other words next monday after golden globe where he should win over Cooper Malek will officialy be the front runner for oscar, he basically already has BAFTA in his bag.
Do you expect Malek to win SAG? Even HFPA + BAFTA isn’t guaranteed if Bale or Cooper takes SAG and BFCA. Bale could have HFPA + SAG (BFCA feels like Cooper).
i totally expect the sweep if he wins the globe today, the fact that BR is nominated at SAG even for the cast when Malek is basically the whole movie is indicative, it’s like he got 2 nominations.
If I pick Glenn Close, is that considered NGNG?
No. Most people agree she’s second in the category at worst.
But nobody is picking her.
I have made a decision and am stumping for Close.
May the Force be with you!
I am keeping my faith for Close.
I just don’t believe people are going to vote for Gaga. Close or Colman should win. Remember the average age of the academy. Body of work for Close. Momentum for Colman.
I’m talking about GG on Sunday night.
My note above applies – HFP is an interesting bunch – they like to honor breadth of work. Glenn Close could win. I’m still scratching my head on Blunt over Colman. Will be interesting to see who wins.
But I would’ve said that about Spike Lee for best director (or at least top 3) and Sasha is allowed him… What makes a NGNG feels kinda blurred when it comes to winners!
I have had a premonition… Black Panther will take Picture – Drama.
I could see it happening — and it would send people into a tizzy. Would love to see the fall-out, haha.
That would be the first time ever that a film without director and screenplay nominations would win best picture – drama
I have a horrible feeling this is one of those years where inexplicable things happen.
My non-premonition brain still says A Star is Born.
I have an even more horrible premonition that this is one of those years where all that happens is explicable things. I’d love some inexplicable stuff to happen.
I should have said ‘inexcusable’
Is that with *both* nods? Or has a BP-drama won w/ one or the other?
And only Gladiator has won with a nomination at only one of the two and not winning either
There have been a few cases with only one: The Revenant, Avatar, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Gladiator with only director, and Scent of a Woman with only screenplay
I am sure “Avatar” won BD as well as BP at GG.
I think Ferdinand meant only one of Director and Screenplay.
My question was related to BPs being NOMINATED for both BD and screenplay at GG.
Yes, but Avatar didn’t have a screenplay nomination. That’s what I meant. Avatar, Return of the King and Gladiator won drama picture without screenplay nominations, Scent of a Woman won without a director nomination, and Gladiator is the only film to not get one of screenplay and director nominations and to not win director or screenplay as well
I am a bit confused. Didn’t “The Revenant” win without screenplay nom also?
Thank you, I forgot about that. In fact, I should probably run over the winners list once more. I’ll return with the results soon.
I couldn’t find anything else besides The Revenant that was missing from my list. I’ll add it now
Thank you. I was too lazy to do the research. 🙂 So statistically (if GG can be predicted with stats), BKK is the frontrunner. I see a lot of people are picking ASiB w/ Cuaron winning BD. That’s even a rarer phenomenon.
Statistically speaking, either A Star Is Born (2018) or BlacKkKlansman would be the frontrunner in Drama (having Director nominations) and either Green Book or Vice would be the frontrunner in Comedy/Musical (having both Director and Screenplay nominations).
A STAR IS BORN/GREEN BOOK
DIRECTOR – COOPER
MALEK/BALE
GAGA/COLMAN
ALI
KING
SCREENPLAY – THE FAVOURITE
SCORE – MARY POPPINS RETURNS
SONG – GAGA
FOREIGN – ROMA
ANIMATED – SPIDERVERSE
My Golden Globe Predictions:
Best Picture Drama: A Star is Born.
Best Actor Drama: Bradley Cooper.
Best Actress Drama: Glenn Close.
Best Picture Comedy: Vice.
Best Actor Comedy: Christian Bale.
Best Actress Comedy: Olivia Colman.
Best Supporting Actor: Richard E. Grant.
Best Supporting Actress: Amy Adams.
Best Director: Alfonso Cuaron.
Best Screenplay: The Favourite.
Best Foreign Language Film: Roma.
Best Animated Feature Film: Spiderman Into The Spiderverse.
Best Original Score: First Man (Justin Hurwitz).
Best Original Song: Shallow from A Star is Born (Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper).
Cooper didn’t write Shallow.
Yeah. Sorry. My bad. It’s Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt.
NGNG
Best director: Spike Lee
Best score: Black panther
Lol @ “The Golden Globes will happen, for better or for worse”
If anything other than A Star is Born wins we will he shook and I think it could happen. Blackkklansman and Black Panther are getting momentum. Also got a feeling the foreign language might be considered enough for Alfonso and it might (should) go to Spike, I don’t think they’ll give it too Cooper since they (should) know better than two pass on Cuaron and Lee for him. And thus Cooper walks away with Best Actor.
For actress, the two that win are gonna go head to head at the Oscars. Most likely Gaga vs Colman/Blunt.
GLOBE PREDICTIONS-
BEST PICTURE (DRAMA): A Star Is Born
BEST PICTURE (COMEDY/MUSICAL): Green Book
BEST DIRECTOR: Alfonso Cuaron, Roma
BEST ACTOR (DRAMA): Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody
BEST ACTRESS (DRAMA): Glenn Close, The Wife
BEST ACTOR (COMEDY/MUSICAL): Christian Bale, Vice
BEST ACTRESS (COMEDY/MUSICAL): Emily Blunt, Mary Poppins Returns
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Mahershala Ali, Green Book
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk
BEST SCREENPLAY: The Favourite
BEST SCORE: Black Panther
BEST SONG: “Shallow”, A Star Is Born
BEST FOREIGN FILM: Roma
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE: Incredibles 2
I’m still not sold on Rami Malek. I think with the poor reviews, Cooper can still swing in and take this. He’s just up for so much metal, I can’t pin point where to place him. He’s my second place for Director, but I think Alfonso wins for Roma; not just for the craft of the film, but to keep the movie in headlines. Since it wasn’t eligible for Best Picture, if it wins Director I can see the next day stories say ‘A Star Is Born’, ‘Roma’, ‘Green Book’ Big winners at Globes. It can also certify Roma as a strong contender for the Oscar for best picture.
Glenn Close. It’s really a long shot, mainly because nobody saw The Wife. Or at least, remembered that it actually opened in the summer. But it’s a solid performance, and I just think she has the narrative to take it. But there’s no denying the Gaga train and I actually could see Gaga win Globe, and Close still win SAG. But in the meantime, I’m betting against most and saying Close begins her journey to her first Oscar on Sunday. Voters can rest assure that Gaga will already be an Oscar winner with the inevitable “Shallow” song winning.
Which brings me to Best Picture (Drama). I am back and forth between it and Black Panther. Is the latter movie really going home empty handed like experts are predicting? It’s score , It think , still wins. First Man winning would be fine, but I think voters might not see it as a factor since it’s not anywhere else. This hasn’t stopped them from voting for the likes of un-nominated Oscar scores like the beautiful Legend of 1900 – Ennio Morricone. But I am not sold that Panther walks out with zero.
I also think Tom O’Neil may be on to something with Spike Lee winning Best Director. BlackKklansman is the other threat many may not see coming.
I have Regina King winning still. I won’t give up. I think her winning the Globe will block Adams from taking SAG from Emily Blunt, who I currently think will win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for A Quiet Place. It’s all a strategic game. A Star Is Born was placed in the Drama category specifically, I think, to block Glenn Close from winning- as Gaga would be a shoo in for the Comedy/Musical trophy (as would Cooper, I think- even over Bale). Back to Blunt, she wins Actress for Mary Poppins to keep her name in the narrative – so voters can see she’s on fire. But I don’t think she makes the cut for Lead Actress come Oscar nominations. A Quiet Place is already sneaking in top 10s, including the PGA. If Amy Adams wins, I still say it’s a battle for the SAG. If Adams triumphs there, it’s over. But until then, I’m battling it out.
I don’t see Glenn Close winning at this point. I think her journey actually ended today, and let me explain. We know that The Wife is most likely going to only get nominated for Best Actress. So that means the film doesn’t have a lot of support from other branches. In that case, if you’re going to be the only above the line nominee of your movie, you have to win one of these major critics awards to keep your campaign and momentum alive: NYFCC, LAFCC, NBR, or NSFC. Today she lost the last of the four she needed to stay in the game. She’s lost so much momentum since last September. Now she has to hope for another above the line nomination (Picture, Directing, Acting, Screenplay) to have a historical statistical precedent for a win. But that’s a major challenge. Picture? The main problem for Glenn’s campaign has been the movie is just good, it’s not that great. Directing? There’s nothing special about the film’s direction. Screenplay? It’s by far the part of the movie that most people have critiques about. Me included. I thought that while it’s a good movie, the writing was what made it not a great movie. Acting? Jonathan Pryce’s performance is fine, but it’s not award worthy and is highly unlikely to knock out the Supporting Actor contenders that are getting these key early precursor nominations. So I don’t see Glenn Close winning it this year, unfortunately.
Wait, Sasha is saying that ASIB might be hindered here because it doesn’t have a Screenplay nom? By that logic, Beale Street must be the Best Picture winner because Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, and Bohemian Rhapsody don’t have Screenplay noms either.
So, The AACTA International Awards (The Australian Academy) gave its prizes tonight. And I think we can get to some conclusions:
Best Picture – Roma (has always been the favorite to win since the beginning. The barriers
probably will be broken. Remember: The AACTA Awards is a group of 200 Academy Members) Last years winner: 3 Bilboards.
Best Director: Cuarón (the assumed frontrunner) last year’s winner: Nolan
Best Actor: Malek ( I think it is foolish to bet against him at this point). Last year’s winner: Oldman.
Best Actress: Colman (beating Close and Gaga. I think she is the supposed frontrunner of the season. She is winning BAFTA too.) Last year’s winner: Margot Robbie
Best Supporting Actor: Marhasha Ali (I think this category is anyone’s game). Last year’s winner: Rocwell
Best Supporting Actress: Kidman, for Boy Erased (always when there is an australian treasure nominated, they tend to go for him or her. Kidman had also won the Australian Version of the AACTA. Margot Robbie, another juice australian treasure, beat Frances McDormand last year. So, I think it is still Amy Adams to lose at the Oscars.)
Best Screenplay: The Favourite.
Considering this, I think we can say that it looks like we will have a race between “Roma” and “The Favourite” for the Oscars. Of course, let’s wait the other prizes, but ASIB looks weaker and weaker, and Black Panther simply doesn’t have the international votes necessary to win Oscar.
I think we can also say that Malek stole Cooper’s thunder, and since Jean Dujardin win for The Artist, this is the strongest case of a dark horse we have in a season..
ASIB is the obvious BP winner , as is GAGA for BAs
I’m still sticking with Cooper for Director.
Oh God.
Holy shit….Wow I can’t believe I am in love with the favourite!! What a pleasant, twisted, weird, original, top notch acting with great costumes two hour experience I just had! I might just watch it again haha. I honestly can’t figure out who I liked better out of the 3 leads… either way all are deserving and honestly put up some up the best acting I’ve seen this year. Anyway I think it’s “popular” enough to make the cut come nomination time. Right? Right?:)
I had eerily similar reactions after seeing it for the first time. However, its relatively poor performance at some precursors makes me think it might not be that “popular” after all. Makes me sad, really.
What other movies would you recommend? I like the shocking weird and unexpected. Hollywood doesn’t do enough of that these days
While haven’t seen them myself (I know, I know) people say other Lanthimos films are similar in style, especially The Lobster. Sorry to Bother You is also wonderfully random, and Toni Erdmann is one of my favourites with absurd humour (although it’s less LOL that the others).
Toni Erdmann is absolutely fantastic.
If there is any justice it will LEAD on Nominations morning. 10 could happen : picture, director, screenplay, actress, s. actress, s. actress, editing, cinematography, costumes, art direction.
I saw it Tuesday and loved it. I keep thinking about it. I want to see it again too.
“Can this masterpiece of a film and all its three magnificent actresses win every award possible for their spectacular work?” Thank you – the world.
If it’s that good then it cannot win the Oscar. There is a certain bar that is too high to climb above for such film at the Oscar.
I agree with the acting. I don’t remember ever seeing a film where the three leads are equally compelling and the actors are equally at the top of their game. It’s such an accomplishment for the filmmakers that as an audience, I can’t pick a favourite.
This is going to be a fun night! Here are my final predictions.
Best Film (Drama): A Star is Born
Best Film (Comedy/Musical): Green Book
Best Actor (Drama): Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody)
Best Actor (Comedy/Musical): Christian Bale (Vice)
Best Actress (Drama): Lady Gaga (A Star is Born)
Best Actress (Comedy/Musical): Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns)
Best Supporting Actor: Mahershala Ali (Green Book)
Best Supporting Actress: Amy Adams (Vice)
Best Director: Alfanso Cuaron (Roma)
Best Screenplay: The Favourite
Best Original Score: Mary Poppins Returns
Best Original Song: Shallow (A Star is Born)
Best Animated Feature Film: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Best Foreign Language Film: Roma
While I do think she delivered a good performance, I will say that I will consider it a travesty if Lady Gaga wins when they have Rosamund Pike’s epic, career best turn in that category, too. Not to mention Glenn Close. And Nicole Kidman. And Melissa McCarthy.
And Toni Collette.
Not in the category at the Golden Globes, but yes, a Gaga win in general would be problematic this season considering the many, MANY epic lead performances from actresses in 2018. The fact that the likes of Collette, Roberts, Ronan, Kidman, Knightley, Davis, Mulligan delivering arguably career-best work, are barely in the conversation, confirms it. Very strong year for actresses.
It is not Lady Gaga’s doing that the others are not in the conversation. She’s not controlling the narrative for anyone else nor running the marketing departments at their respective studios. We should all calm down about this because it’s not truly “problematic” — with a higher altitude perspective it’s just a silly Globe and frankly there are far more problematic things in the world at the moment than a movie acting award. As I’ve said before, she’s the only one in the entire collection a female performances this year that delivered an old fashion, punch through the emotion “movie star” performance and that is what people are responding to. She may have inadvertently done that but she did, nonetheless.
That’s why my issue is not and never has been with her.
That’s why my issue is not and never has been with her. She is in the conversation as she deserves to be for delivering a very good performance. My issue is with pundits and voters who ignore arguably better performances than hers. That’s all.
Agreed. Mulligan has been robbed. She’s amazing in Wildlife. Collette is my favorite of the year though.
Another thing is Gaga WILL win an award no matter what. Giving her two when there many greats performances is overkill, especially to a first time actress in a movie.
Rosamund Pike’s “career best” turn is still Gone Girl. She took a femme fatale and turned her inside out and was justly rewarded with a nomination. I admired her performance this year but I saw a lot of acting going on, which was perfectly fine but did not merit in my view a career best label.
In my book her Amy Dunne is close second but her Marie Colvin is definitely the best. And frankly citing “a lot of acting going on” as a con of sort when Gaga’s performance is basically a bunch of obvious singing scenes and closeups whenever she has a tear coming aka textbook “look at me I’m acting!” vibes, is a bit unfair. If you didn’t see “a lot of acting going on” with Gaga which is I’m guessing your way of saying she was more natural than the others, it’s because she played a version of herself. NOT herself, but a character that she could clearly relate to on many, MANY levels. This is a luxury none of her competitors had.
It was like a modern version of a performance you can see someone like Bette Davis doing in the 1940’s.
OT: I finally saw Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse today, and I have to say, it was one of the best films I’ve seen all year. I knew it was getting great reviews, but part of me didn’t believe it was *that* good. Lo and behold, it’s that good. Engaging animation, smart writing, entertaining as hell, funny, fresh, and a great message. Loved every second. Hopefully it wins the Oscar.
My official predictions for the Golden Globes:
BP (D) – A Star is Born
Actor (D) – Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born

I feel very uneasy about predicting nothing for Blackkklansman, but I just can’t give it anything that would make sense.
I too picked The Favourite for Screenplay but because of that I picked it for Best Comedy/Musical. Looking back at past winner, seems about 50/50 that the Best Screenplay winner also gets Picture.
But a film snubbed in Directing almost never wins Picture, if there are competitors nominated for Directing.
In fact, they are two films in C/M nominated for BD and screenplay. I think either one of them will win. I am leaning slightly towards GB but Pitt effect could mean “Vice” wins. GG loves its movie stars.
So (Ryan) Adams is the only one not predicting (Amy) Adams – cool! 🙂
We were so close to a “Stone predicting Adams, Adams predicting Stone” situation.
You’re all forgetting Sandra Bullock’s character in Gravity was named “Ryan Stone.”
:)) Brilliant!…
You know I haven’t mentioned it because I’m sure he gets it all the time, but my favorite singer/songwriter is Ryan Adams. So “our” Ryan Adams has that going for him at least.
Ryan Adams is cool!… 🙂 (Applies to both.)
Well she is a shoe in for Sharp Objects which is a far more deserving performance one of her best.
Oh, what! I was going to make same comment. Talk about our brains being sync. Good thing I scrolled down before I made a comment.
🙂 Yeah, I’ve been terrible at that this season. It’s already happened to me too many times that I make a comment, then find that the answer/question/comment has already been given/posed/made below… (I’m doing my best to avoid doing it again, of course.)
Sasha forgot to vote for Best Actress – Comedy/Musical
Updated, thanks!
That sounds weird! I don’t think she forgot to vote; they just didn’t write it.
Does anyone know of a free Globes stream online? I’ll be out of the country
There are these “illegal” ones that I generally use (it’s impossible to watch them in a legitimate way in my country). I don’t want to recommend any specific one as I don’t really want to take responsibility for it, but if you google the network name and live stream, you can usually find some working ones.
