Am I missing something with The Favorite? How did it miss this guild and the Oscar shortlist?
Doesn’t make sense.
Vice has better make up and hairstyling? Bullshit.
To clarify I emohasize my written piece below I not judging lady gaga as whole.over this ky opinion may disagree is her acting debut and sings overrated but just my opinion I don’t know individual nor presume her entire career tainted but I insist she mislead or was it her (handlers or advisers )? by keeping hush hush and only after globes win reports broke worldwide on this remember some things known instates as in Australia news reports prioritised based what they about differently , what u may known instates not.known international level outside if USA.
Therefore and nevertheless I blame poor example Oscar set for possibly ? It worth speculating on ga- ga or her minders taking leaf out of two individual in Oscar history pulled off biggest deceptions ( the whole ga- ga saga is them taking page out if Oscars unhealthy precedents they should never have set) namelyroman Polanski and esp. Harvey Weinstein.
So no I don’t blame game ga- ga entirely it rotten morrallt corrupt cut lture festers In academy since turn if century that I point finger at mainog still share self responsibility ga& ga ought take and I still feel fair on other contenders if someone wins least best actress ( honestly music in MPR far superior to ga- ga song nomination )
They should some u people are clearly oblivious to complacency that academy reputation is damaged cos they swept whole thing under carpet some u needs learn it shocking error judgement of academy to carry on such astonishing breathtaking hypocrisy . furthermore case for bias in favour lady gaga ga is reinforced by fact make up and hairstyling by admission one individual is a one or two off scene compared to both quality quantity of other contenders ESp black panther it nowhere bear as ambitious for groundbreaking what bet though those u defending gaga obviously think arrogantly it OK to ” get away” with dark art in u past hope academy don’t know …and think it ok make such reckless tasteless mistake .
Sorry some u think it convenient to falsely claim slander how can it be when facts are true? Yes in terms specifics I admit I was going off media report but there were facts underpinning it tell me some u wise people think your so smart how is it morally right fair for anyone not just against lady gaga u oversimplifying clearly don’t have clue what I about those of you that is who presume I against lady gaga. I just think she most overrated musician in our era.
She nowhere near class of Mariah Carey or influence if whitney Houston or powerhouse Celine Dion once was. frankly symptomatic of flawed Hollywood mentality that my grievance it pretty damn bloody awful statement if academy support someone anyone who yes gaga admit in report making a mistake but don’t any u think it suspicious timing AFTER she lost globes?
Again nothing against her personally but I not alone in feeling lady gaga performance more bout turn from musician to actor rather fact she best performance by musician turned actor far from it it not new precedent .
For any member Hollywood be authentic lead by example onus is on any celebrity admit their past error judgements this is not like a past shoplift thing this is involvement even as once off with someone convicted if sexcrime. Expectation in any workplace is you own your mistake accept responsibility.
Fact lady gaga or even if it were anyone else is allowed to be nominated not once but twice does raise serious questions of Oscars misplaced misguided priorities …
If they serious about Weinstein affair scandal if ” me too” to them more than just gestured symbolism in once off how bout they restrict eligibility criteria for individuals anyone of past or active involvement with past criminal conviction that been proven which they been found guilty and person ( in this case ga ga) who engaged with someone knowingly done wrongdoing doesn’t fess up before awards season is bring misleading deceptive.
Those critical me should appct that worst criticism I have ga ga I not saying she criminal but her actions no different yo Weinstein and Roman Polanski in pre ‘ me too” era should be regarded as form of deception for awards advantage and not be tolerated. By anyone even if it was another actor or actress they still stand condemned. I bring same criticism.
I say cos nobody else has guts to. Academy should not rubber stamped single movie weinsteins, should never endorsed Roman Polanski I don’t give as shit bout if some movies brilliant which both men occassional ones were.
They should even today strip them of their Oscars for Oscars once were bout honour integrity and honesty now it bout deception .
It not smear cos I didn’t do report. Yes some show biz stuff is trash but if media found out recently question we should ask ourselves more broadly ” me too” how is it fair on other aspiring Oscar nominees in that category if frontrunner can get away hiding facts or did academy know all along they just chose play dumb manipulating their authority ?
No host, no hope I losing hope , losing patience and I not alone I tell u that now. Academy have to conduct stricter vetting procrss make sure every producer, actor actress, filmmaker tech crew nominated is clean in their history not engaged with knowingly or commuted themselves any serious crime and all cast crew nominated in every category each year at Oscars must comply or face disqualification before or after academy.
If lady ga- ga wins I promise u backlash will occur by some pple like me who have moral conciounce care bout restoration of honour pride honesty that once underpinned academy…
Honestly some u have no damn idea …for record I do believe with favourite gaining momentum and Roma ( unfortunately ) at least we see ASIB has fight on it hands it very very clichéd overrated academy do better hell embrace first ever box office record breaking game changer with ridiculous high level critical acclaim higher I may add on average than every other contender this year comfortably so in black panther.
What are people’s thoughts on the likely Oscar nominations for Best Editing? We’re all aware of the strong correlation between the Editing nomination and a BP win, but the race currently breaks down as follows:
Perceived locks-
1. Roma [140 points]
2. First Man [125]
3. A Star Is Born (2018) [100]
Fighting for the last two spots-
4. The Favourite [48]
5. Vice [46]
6. Black Panther [35]
7. Widows [21]
8. BlacKkKlansman [19]
9. Bohemian Rhapsody [16]
10. Green Book [15]
Arguably all of the above SEVEN films have a shot in the line-up (although I’m skeptical about Widows), but don’t BlacKkKlansman and Green Book have to make it in if they’re actually a threat for BP? Do we think AMPAS will ignore The Favourite and Vice, among others?
I think BlacKkKlansman is comfortably in. The other one is probably among The Favourite, Vice (I hope this one is left out) and Black Panther. I’m not entirely sold on First Man though.
A Star Is Born (2018) is the one that just missed Editing at BAFTA, while the other films in the top 5 got in, along with Bohemian Rhapsody. Can’t see it missing, but First Man has shown no “weakness” when it comes to Editing.
I think both ASIB and BlacKkKlansman make it in at the expense of Vice and Boheman Rhapsody (from the BAFTA lineup).
Bohemian is slick, so I can see it in. Vice should be in since it’s flashy. Favourite deserves it because it’s so elegantly made. First Man is slow. KKK makes sense on paper but again moves pretty slowly. Mission: Impossible is getting ripped off.
Vice is flashy but it’s bad and distracting.
A Star Is Born (2018) is now 10 for 10 with the guilds. It will probably miss MPSE and VES, but that’s still an impressive result for the frontrunner.
The next highest number is 7 of 10, shared by BlacKkKlansman (missed ASC, ADG, CAS); Black Panther (missed ACE, ASC, DGA); and Bohemian Rhapsody (missed WGA, ASC, DGA).
The third highest number is 6 of 10, shared by Roma (missed SAG, CAS, CDG, MAHGA) and Crazy Rich Asians (missed WGA, ASC, CAS, DGA).
The fourth highest number is 5 of 10, shared by Vice (missed SAG, ASC, ADG, CAS, CDG) and The Favourite (missed SAG, WGA^, CAS, DGA, MAHGA).
The fifth highest number is 4 of 10, shared by Green Book (missed SAG, ASC, ADG, CAS, CDG, MAHGA); A Quiet Place (missed SAG, ACE, ASC, DGA, CDG, MAHGA); and First Man (missed SAG, PGA, WGA, DGA, CDG, MAHGA).
So now we agree it’s the front runner?
Best Picture nominees:
1. A Star Is Born
2. Roma
3. Green Book
4. BlacKKKlansman
5. Black Panther
6. The Favourite
7. Vice
8. A Quiet Place
9. Bohemian Rhapsody
10. If Beale Street Could Talk
A Star is Born might become the film with most noms at the Oscar this year… I was not expecting it doing 100% with the guilds. No remake (I believe) ever did that.
We stan!
What bloody make up hair styling in star is born? Outright blindsided favoritism by shallow pretentious guilds doesn’t matter scandal surrounding lady gaga having knowingly worked in past recently with convicted sex fiend has tainted her chances suffice to say ASIB most overrated Oscar contender in decades
How does that stack up against the Academy that has not only nominated but awarded known “sex fiends” like Harvey Weinstein and Woody Allen and Roman Polanski etc. Now anyone that has worked with such people get disqualified too? I don’t think so.
It’s bad enough that Gaga is trying to delete Do What U Want from all platforms. We shouldn’t delete perfectly good pieces just because someone is in them who we don’t like. Just as we shouldn’t burn American Beauty DVDs either.
I love American Beauty and always will.
They should some u people are clearly oblivious to complacency that academy reputation is damaged cos they swept whole thing under carpet some u needs learn it shocking error judgement of academy to
LOL she recorded one song with somebody once (and I suspect wasn’t even in the room with him when they recorded it). Why would guilds care?
She was in the video with him (and Terry Richardson) and the video was pro-rape. They performed together on SNL. It was vile.
It’s wasn’t pro-rape, it’s called “Do What U Want” which is literally
a sentence expressing consent. You obviously lack critical thinking skills, but I suppose I can also remind you that song uses sexual activity as a metaphor for the way the media treats people – objectifying them and expressing ownership over people in a way that isn’t consensual. But go off I guess.
Err..expressing consent is not “do what you want” with sexual connotations sorry you kniw deep down that downright immoral disgraceful u defend it my goodness me it indefensible or not just ga-ga are jre generation Hollywood stars so lacking in moral code? They supposed to be role models future aspiring actresses would look up to. It clear now ga- ga purposefully held this back . it is simply not OK for either men or women to take one another for granted ” if it consent it can’t be ” do what u want” ga-ga clearly lacking moral code I extremely worried if Oscar award her more so actress then song . I smell cover up By academy
Thankyou for specifics well all more reason if theme of clip was ” pro- rape” for academy embrace ga- ga is absolute disgrace bring integrity of Oscar in. Disrepute
Yeah, the hairstylists shouldn’t be honored because one time Gaga worked with someone that committed a crime a decade earlier lolololol
While she may have worked with him (6 years ago…), he has not been convicted of being a sex fiend as you put it. Not defending him by any means as he is a monster in my eyes as well as many others, but this post is just false and straight up slander.
There’s a story line about Ally dying her hair to become a pop star. There. There’s the answer to your question.
Just a heads up on case anybody cares don’t rely on your whatsoever at the Oscars… Since let’s look at the last few years – last year 6 of the 7 shortlisted films were nominated for at least one award, the one that want (Victoria and Abdul) was nominated at Oscars. The previous year there were 2 and one of them (Man Called Over) was nominated. Before that 2 got in that weren’t nominated here. There are years (eg the previous one before that) that they ate all nominated here but it’s more the exception than the rule.
Tbh, since guilds like Production Design, Costumes and Makeup have separate categories for Contemporary and Period and Fantasy films. It’s not that surprising that A Star Is Born got nominations. Since the Oscars do not separate them, usually most of their nominations come from the Period and Fantasy categories. So I don’t expect Star to get these noms at the Oscars. Still awesome to see it so so well.
The contemporary category is a joke. I really can’t believe A Star is Born got into every single guild, especially make-up, costumes, editing, writing, art direction and direction.
Makeup is a really strange nomination. I’d love to ask them why. Wasn’t there a whole story about Lady Gaga wanting to do this film without any makeup at all?
Actually there’s an interview on YouTube with Cooper who details all the makeup they used for him.
Some of the makeup in The Favourite was outstanding.
Where is Destroyer?
Of the Academy’s shortlist: Suspiria and Border both missed here. Sort of shocked at Suspiria’s omission considering how many people didn’t realize Tilda was 3 different characters.
Maybe that’s why it did not get nominated: the make-up work was so good people did not realize it was make-up!
Kudos to ”Aquaman.” It scored its first Guild nominations today: for Makeup and Costumes.
MQoS outperforming The Favourite here is interesting.
Actually it’s not because The Favourite was already dropped some time ago from the Oscar shortlist. So it has no shot at Oscar for this category. Looks like the guild either was influenced by their decision or simply also don’t think it’s worthy.
I do not know about make-up but I was bothered that no one bothered to dye Rachel Weisz’s hair. Lady Marlborough had fair hair. A fiery brunette she most certainly was not.
Oh my god it’s Vox Lux. So now it’s official: due to overwhelming guilds support, Natalie Portman is definitely winning the wide open Supporting Actress race!
Border is also missing — too bad.
Suspiria got robbed. Yuck.
But Vox Lux finally got something!!!
Vice
Mary Queen of Scots
Black Panther
Alternate: BR for the mustache.
This SUSPIRIA erasure will not be tolerated!
Guild Count:
10 – A Star is Born
7 – Black Panther, BlacKKKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody
6 – Crazy Rich Asians, Roma, The Favourite, Vice
5 – A Quiet Place, Green Book
4 – First Man, Mary Poppins Returns
Is there a Visual Effects guild? Surely Star wasn’t nominated there.
Curious how you’re counting 5 for Green Book (PGA, ACE, WGA, DGA) and A Quiet Place (PGA, ADG, WGA, CAS) when I only got four.
Are you counting individual SAG nominations? Only SAG Ensemble is really comparable.
That’s exactly what I did: I’ve been counting the individual nods in SAG alongside ensemble. Note that that I’ve also done the same for The Favourite, Vice, and Mary Poppins Returns.
