Tonight, the ACE Eddie Awards will unfurl, giving us some indication as to what thousands and thousands of people think might be the best film of the year.
A quick look back at ACE/Oscar history tells us that it’s extremely rare to win the Eddie without having a corresponding Oscar nomination.
The films nominated for Eddies this year with corresponding Oscar nominations include:
The Favourite (comedy)
Green Book (comedy)
The films in drama without a corresponding Oscar nod:
A Star Is Born
Films in comedy without a corresponding Oscar nod include:
Crazy Rich Asians
Most likely, the film that wins in either category will have a corresponding Oscar nomination. We did just see Emily Blunt win the SAG without a corresponding Oscar nomination. And it’s possible that things have really changed overall in the Oscar race so that the overlap is not as reliable as it once was. Any of the ones NOT nominated could win, like Roma or A Star Is Born. But the one that actually deserves it is First Man, although it doesn’t have a corresponding Oscar nom so it would be extraordinary if it won. Can’t say it won’t happen, but the drama Eddie most likely will go to either BlacKkKlansman or Bohemian Rhapsody.
BlacKkKlansman — Sasha Stone, Jazz Tangcay
First Man — Ryan Adams, Marshall Flores
Green Book — Stone
Vice — Flores
The Favourite — Tangcay
Deadpool 2 — Adams
Free Solo — Tangcay, Stone, Flores
Three Identical Strangers — Adams
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse — Stone, Tangcay, Flores, Adams
