Oscar season is off and running with Telluride and Venice just weeks one week away. One of the major contenders is thought to be Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” for Netflix, getting a theatrical release in the fall. “Marriage Story” drops two teasers and posters with two different points of view on a marriage breaking up. The film also stars Laura Dern, Alan Alda, and Ray Liotta.
Baumbach describes it this way:
“MARRIAGE STORY is a love story that reveals itself within the breakdown. With these companion trailers I wanted to show the relationship through the eyes of both characters. There are many sides to every story, and the movie embraces these different viewpoints in order to find the shared truth.”
Meanwhile, Baumbach’s significant other, Greta Gerwig, also has a big Oscar movie releasing this year, “Little Women.”
Getting distinctive The Disappearence of Eleanor Rigby vibes. ALWAYS a good thing.
Also, nice to see Scarlett Johansson back to her roots. She broke out as one of the most promising young actresses ever with a long list of memorable arthouse classics (The Horse Whisperer, The Man Who Wasn’t There, Ghost World, Lost in Translation, Girl with a Pearl Earring, Match Point, The Prestige, Vicky Cristina Barcelona). She was very deserving of some serious Oscar love in those days yet it didn’t happen.
Then she spent a decade becoming the biggest female action star of our time (Marvel, Lucy) while still making time for the occasional arthouse fare (Hitchcock, Her, Under the Skin, Hail Caesar!) and NOW more than two decades after her big break (1998 – The Horse Whisperer) she is destined to have a career-best year : she was the female lead of the highest grossing film of all time (Endgame) and has two festival films that could secure her awards campaigns both in lead (Marriage Story) and in supporting (Jojo Rabbit).
And all I know is that it would be about damn time she received her first Oscar nomination that let’s face it, should have happened around 15 years ago. Honestly at this point we should just call it the Romanov Curse considering the other actress who bafflingly enough has yet to receive an Oscar nomination in spite of many brilliant performances, is Emily Blunt who was originally cast as Natasha Romanoff.
I definitely also got the Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby vibes too. This looks like an incredible mix between that and the Before trilogy. Very impressed by the performance in the trailer, this is my most anticipated movie this year!
Looks great. I am not an Adam Driver fan. Before anyone attacks me for that I think the movies he’s done are good but something just doesn’t sit well with me loving him like many others do.
ScarJo is playing Jennifer Jason Leigh, right?
(be honest, a lot of people are quietly wondering if Baumbach is exorcising some demons here)

Uffda. Antlers looks interesting.
I literally just got back from seeing Portrait of a Lady on Fire at my local film festival and can confirm it’s amazing! I’ve just thrown it into my best of the year so far slot for now, –
it’s so sweet and beautifully shot and paced and so easy to just get completely absorbed in the atmosphere of it… Plus it’s the rare film that I think a large range of people will be able to get behind because on the surface it’s really simple and easy to watch but there’s so much going on beneath the surface too. I seriously can’t recommend it enough (and I’m really looking forward to seeing it again).
I’m counting the days until I can see it
So excited to screen it at TIFF. Expecting it to be in my top 5.
