Several of the films have not yet had their required Los Angeles seven-day qualifying run. Submitted features must fulfill the theatrical release requirements and comply with all of the category’s other qualifying rules before they can advance in the nominations voting process. To determine the five nominees, members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch are automatically eligible to vote in the category. Academy members outside of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch are invited to opt-in to participate and must meet a minimum viewing requirement to be eligible to vote in the category.
Films submitted in the Animated Feature Film category also qualify for Academy Awards in other categories, including Best Picture.
Blue Velvet was ranked 3es if the AFU
This is a great year for an indie movie to take the prize. Animated feature has been one of the easiest categories to pick each year, this might be harder than usual.
Unless they royally screw up the Frozen sequel I suspect:
1. Frozen 2
2. Toy Story 4
3. Abominable
4. Missing Link
5. Up for grabs, between: How to Train Your Dragon 3, Weathering With You, Bunuel in the Labyrinth of Turtles
Slight chance for Addam’s Family, Funan, or Okko’s Inn to surprise.
I’m surprised that The Lion King and Wonder park aren’t included. Not that they deserve to be nominated but it’s just surprising.
If there’s any justice in this world, Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles should win this year’s category hands down. Hope it gets nominated as a consolation prize.
Because LION KING is “live action” lol
Shaun the Sheep 2’s absence surprises me the most, given how the GREAT 1st film got nominated 4 yrs. back. The sequel gets released in the UK this weekend and IMDb says it’ll get released in the US on Dec. 13.
Will it compete next year? If so, that means it’ll have to avoid LA County until Jan. 1, 2020 at the very least.
The most likely thing is that they didn’t submit the film for the category and thus it won’t be eligible ever
Which is strange, given the 1st film’s nomination.
Disney+, stream A Rainy Day in New York, you cowards.
Weathering With You should win this, but Disney has this category on lock because this category’s voter base doesn’t even vote based on watching the movies.
It really is the best of the ones I’ve seen. I think it will struggle to get a nom, sadly.
It seems to be Gkids’ main push (it’s the biggest logo on their FYC page), and Mirai proved that there can be a likelihood of anime films getting nominations even in busy years.
Also, it being Japan’s International Film selection is an interesting factor. If Weathering With You beats the odds and gets on the shortlist, that is a lot more Academy eyeballs on that movie.
We all know Disney’s going to win. “Best Animated Feature” is basically the Disney award.
So Toy Story 4 and four others… this was a pretty bad year as far as general animated releases go imo. I would like to see Lego Movie 2 get nominated just to make up a little for the egregious snub that should have been The Originals win that year.
I agree. I actually thought Lego Part 2 was better than the first but regardless, it’s clear from the lack of any nominations, that the Academy hates the Lego movies. Personally, I don’t think Toy Story 4 should win, as it was about on par with the rest of Pixar’s sequels: Monsters University, Finding Dory, Incredibles 2 etc. But unless Frozen 2 is terrific, I don’t know what would beat it. Bummer.
I like TOY STORY 4 fine, but it’s crap compared to the other 3… It’s just a better than average PIXAR sequel at best. This might be the 1st year ever I give absolutely 0 shits what wins this category.
Personal rankings of what I’ve seen at this point:
1. Toy Story 4
2. Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles
3. Missing Link
4. Funan
5. The Swallows of Kabul
6. Another Day of Life
Definitely seeing nods for Toy Story 4 and Frozen 2. Meanwhile, I would love to see one of the GKids anime films get a nod as well (Weathering with You is already Japan’s submission for International film this year, while I am very interested in seeing Promare).
That is.. not many. Wonder if it makes sense to have an Oscar category that picks 5 nominees out of 32 possible films.
Yet makeup still only has three nominees… ? I’m pretty sure 15 is the minimum to have five nominees which is even more ridiculous to imagine using 1/3 of the films as nominees.
I’m honestly not that much concerned with the 5, rather the 32 itself. Should there be a pompous award for being the best among 32? Not sure.
We should not judge a category by the number of contenders at the start but by the quality of its nominees. And if that means reducing the number of nominees to one per dozen (or a straight win if there are less than a dozen contenders) to increase the quality of the final lineup, then so be it. But we can’t just get rid of the Animated Category and ignore a vital part of the art of movie making, which acts as a breath of fresh air and innocence in an otherwise stuffy ceremony that leans heavily toward « more serious » stuff.
I suppose my issues are more philosophical than practical (I’m not actually advocating for the abolition of the category) but the question is, why should a subsection with only 32 films a year have its own category? Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to consider these films in the main categories? Sure, practically this is hard to do, because voters tend to not take these films seriously enough, but if they did, the separate category would become obsolete IMO.
Nope, Makeup/Hairstyling will get 5 nominees henceforth starting this next Oscars.
thank god! That’s only about a decade or more overdue
It’s a lot actually. In 2015 there was only 16 submitted films.
‘The Bears’ Famous Invasion of Sicily’ would deserve a nod. I saw it today and it’s a true marvel! Maybe next year.
What I have seen so far by order of preference/enjoyment:
Missing Link
Toy Story 4
The Secret Life of Pets 2
Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles
(Quite difficult to rank them actually, because they’re so different, yet all equally likeable in their own way. I would give each of them a B-ish grade. I liked them but I’m not crazy about any of them either.)
Looking forward to watching:
Frozen 2
Okko’s Inn
The Addams Family
Abominable
