One of the first major tests of the new Disney+ streaming service, set to debut November 12, is its ability to expand the already ludicrously successful Disney film properties. First up on launch day is the highly anticipated action series The Mandalorian. Disney released a new trailer of the series today, linked below.
The Mandalorian is not only the first major title to launch on Disney+ but it’s also the first non-trilogy Star Wars property since the underwhelming Solo: A Star Wars Story. Solo’s performance, which followed the last major Star Wars film – The Last Jedi – by only six months, was so shocking to parent studio Disney that it put several follow-up film on hold. Probably a wise move.
But The Mandalorian looks to have appeased the Star Wars faithful thanks to a few well produced trailers, the latest of which dropped today. You get a glimpse of the great lengths traveled by the creative team to bring the property back to the visual style of the original film. The action sequences look strong as well. Really, the only thing that would keep it from becoming at the very least a mildly diverting entertainment would be if the supporting cast disappoints. Having Giancarlo Esposito, Carl Weathers, Nick Nolte, Werner Herzog, Taika Waititi, and Ming-Na Wen in your cast goes a long way toward shoring that up.
The Mandalorian will premiere on Disney+ on November 12. Disney will reportedly make a few episodes available at launch and then parse the rest out over the rest of the year.
