And here they are. I do not know which of these will be eventual nominees.
But I’m fairly certain 1917 and The Irishman have a pretty good shot.
“Ad Astra”
“The Aeronauts”
“Aladdin”
“Alita: Battle Angel”
“Avengers: Endgame”
“Captain Marvel”
“Cats”
“Dumbo”
“Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw”
“Ford v Ferrari”
“Gemini Man”
“The Irishman”
“Jumanji: The Next Level”
“The Lion King”
“Men in Black: International”
“Midway”
“1917”
“Spider-Man: Far from Home”
“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”
“Terminator: Dark Fate”
The Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee determined the preliminary list of films eligible for further awards consideration. Later this month, the committee will select a shortlist of 10 films that will advance to nominations voting.
Nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards will be announced on Monday, January 13, 2020.
Hoping the final 5 are out of these.
I’d like ENDGAME to finally win avfx Oscar for the MCU but being a “Oscary” movie or Best picture nominee always helps.
Ad Astra”
“Avengers: Endgame”
“Ford v Ferrari”
“The Irishman”
“1917”
“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
My picks at the moment:
Alita: Battle Angel
Avengers: Endgame
The Irishman
Star Wars
Either 1917 or The Lion King
Most surprising miss to me is Pokemon: Detective Pikachu. It utilized the same affects on its furry main character that got Christopher Robin into the race last year. (Though some of the non-furry pokemon looked a bit rubbery and maybe that did them in?)
Also surprised Missing Link couldnt get Laika back on the shortlist, but then again it isnt as popular or successful as Kubo.
I’d say:
Avengers: Endgame
Star Wars
The Lion King
Ad Astra
Spider-Man: Far From Home
potential spoilers: 1917 (practical works havent performed well recently), Gemini Man (can new vfx tech overcome a bad film?), Irishman (will a great film overcome terrible vfx?)
So, do films make Bake-Offs purely on the crafts people involved … if the movie hasn’t even been seen yet? (Cats) ?? No clue. Anyone know for sure?
Also, I think it’s impossible to make a sound prediction on the 5 right now because there is always 1-2 noms that make it that we’re like …. ohhhh, really? And there’s always 1-2 shoe-ins that inexplicably don’t make it. it’s fun predicting. But this category drives me crazy, lol.
Maybe they did screen Cats for the VFX branch?
I’d imagine that there is a VFX reel that they showed to the committee. From the rules: “The Executive Committee will request that producers provide opportunities to view their films through advance screenings or screeners. This is especially encouraged when a film will be released after the selection meeting to determine the ten motion pictures that will be considered for nomination. If, and only if, the film is not available by two weeks prior to the selection meeting, excerpts may be submitted.”
Cats will win best VFX and you all just gonna have to deal with it!
LOL!
Anything but aTROSity. I don’t care how great that movie looks, it’s garbage and deserves to be snubbed.
1917
Ad Astra
Cats
The Irishman
The Lion King
… surprised that Godzilla: Kings of Monsters did not make the cut.
The CGI is the worst thing about The Irishman. De Niro looks like he’s been plucked out from I am Legend or Prometheus. It’s a shame because the performance is extraordinary. I have no idea how this can be nommed for VFX
Agree completely . The Irish Man for Visual Effects ? On second thought the de -ageing does remind me of a Marvel movie.
Guessing
1917
The Irishman
The Lion King
Ford v. Ferrari
The Aeronauts
Frozen II should’ve made the shortlist, so here goes…
Ad Astra
Avengers: Endgame
Captain Marvel
Cats
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
I’m guessing the 5 will be
1917
Avengers : Endgame
Star Wars – The Rise of Skywalker
The Lion King
The Irishman
Potential surprise : Alita
I’ll go with
1917 (for the practical slot)
Avengers: Endgame
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
The Lion King (for the Jungle Book slot)
Cats (DiGiTaLfUrTeChNoLoGy)
My guess is that they’ll hate The Irishman’s de-aging at the bakeoff.
So is animation really a special effect? At least with Jungle Book, they had to mix the CGI with some live action. Lion King has zero live action.
And here is the first positive sign for Cats.
Ish. It is confirmed to be in the top20 in a below-the-line category that favours big budget studio films. Making the cut here is the bare minimum it had to pull off so far.
Surprises: no Rocketman, Pokemon, Godzilla, Missing Link
Godzilla actually had BEAUTIFUL visual effects. Too bad it was an awful film.
Agreed. Some very nice visuals but how hard is it to get a decent script!?
So it’s like the first Godzilla then?
