Why are so many going gaga over Jojo’s ACE win here? It’s Parasite’s win that is more impressive. Its competitions were all BP nominees including the legendary Thelma Schoonmaker.
Jojo’s only BP competition was Once Hollywood, which wasn’t nominated at the Oscar. So Jojo’s win was the logical, expected choice. Not to mention, the comedy category is the lesser category in general.
Bingo!
I’ve always considered editing, acting and directing the three main categories you have to be nominated in order to win best picture at the oscar. And then there is a fourth HIDDEN category : the social messagge. So let’s see who got all these things and who missed some of them.
-Joker : It has directing. It has editing. It has acting. It has the wrong social messagge. So it’s 3 out of 4.
-Hollywood : it has directing. It has acting. It has a social messagge (a nostalgic and anti hippies one). It missed editing.
-1917 : It has directing, it has a strong anti-war messagge (they told me that). It missed acting and editing. Anyway i would consider the only acting a real miss because the one shot take is all about cinematography.
-Jojo Rabbit : It has editing. It has acting. It has a strong anti-racism social messagge. It missed directing.
-Irishman : it has editing, acting and directing. It missed social message (there is no redemption there).
-Parasite : it has editing, it has directing, it has a strong social message. It missed acting.
I see Hollywood as the obvious Winner. For best director i ask you : Tarantino has no oscar in directing, Scorsese just one in 40 years of career. Do you see Academy rewarding Mendes for the second time the year those two are nominated in?
Absolutely.
Let’s see. I doubt it.
It’s going to be funny when it happens.
If it happens i agree it will. But there is a big if.
Mendes or Bong are winning even with Tarantino and Scorsese nominated.
Cause they did better work!
It will have been 20 years between Mendes’ wins if they happen. The largest gap for any multi BD winner… It’s very feasible and more than deserved.
You mean like Inarritu going back to back?
It’s still weird they gave Mad Max 6 Oscars and then picked Inarritu for directing the second time in a row.
Bong, obviously. Oscars like them foreign directors (14 out of the last 20 winners).
He would deserve that oscar and it’s true that oscar voters like foreign directors BUT bong is not an english speaker (unlike del toro, inarritu and cuaron) and worked on a totally foreign movie. Inarritu and Del Toro won best director because they worked on movies that had american production. As well as Cuaron in Gravity and D.Boyle. Hanazavicius worked on a movie about hollywood.
Good points. But Bong’s interpreter has been killing it 😉 and I’m betting on Parasite as a stats-busting first-time-for-everything winner. Well, I might be after I see how the rest of this weekend plays out…
which is EXACTLY WHY IT well past time for Academy to get back to embracing the filmmakers that made academy great BEFORE the foreign dominance some wins for foreign filmmakers ok but in such a competitive year completely utterly UNACCEPTABLE
Incorrect.
Let’s go. Big Win for Parasite.
Regardless of what happens at SAG, PGA and DGA, and after the Eddies…
1. 1917 – Why? Frontrunner for Director, and probably most technical categories. The first film in a long time that we can picture winning over 6 Oscars including Best Picture (it actually can win 9, only Original Screenplay is a longshot). Plus, I doubt any serious filmmaker/actor/writer would think that, in this case, Mendes used a gimmick instead of the best tool to deliver the message and portray the story.
2. Jojo Rabbit – the lack of Director nom is its only handicap, and that is balanced with the DGA nom. Also, it is the film that jumps above the rest because it is the fun, crowdpleaser, positive one. It is this year’s Green Book. Plus everybody loves Taika, in Hollywood right now, and wants to work with him.
3. Once upon a Time in Hollywood – OK, this is the film Hollywood would use to masturbate in front of the audiences and continue with the trend of, to win an Oscar, you have to talk about the industry or something completely related to it.
4. Parasite – the Eddie helps a lot, but remember… it is winning International film and that is where the duty call ends for any foreign language film. The only difference, is that Bong Joon-Ho already worked with Hollywood in Okja, while other foreign directors nominees for foreign language films, refused to do so (Almodovar) or just agreed to do a shot for shot remake of his cult film (Haneke). They could win the Directing award (Cuarón) at most, along with Foreign. Parasite would be a first time.
5. The Irishman – i do not think it is over yet, however at this point, is likely to follow the Gangs of New York way and end 10-0.
6. Joker – I think the duty of Oscar starts and ends with Joaquin. It may win Score, but hardly anything else. 11-1 or 11-2 at best.
7. Marriage Story – but I really do not see it winning anything but Dern. But its way for Best Picture would compulsory inclued Johansson upsetting at Lead Actress and Baumbach upsetting at Original Screenplay.
8. Ford v Ferrari – It can really win its three technicals and then move on to win Picture. It is unlikely but it could really happen.
9. Little Women – Honestly, this would be a huge shocker and the only explanation would be the outrage of Greta Gerwig not being nominated, paying off.
I like your overview, the only thing I disagree with is JoJo in 2nd spot and that missing a Director is it’s only handicap. The other films historically that have won Best Picture without a Director nod were much better known filmmakers . I also think the film will not necessarily be seen as fun and crowdpleasing as you describe. I really enjoyed it but I can see why it may not be everybody’s taste. Tonally it works for me but it skates quite recklessly at times across farce and satire and gravitas.
Right now I don’t see it’s path to Oscar BP but with PGA, SAG and BAFTA to come, I’m more leaning towards your #1 pick.
– 1917, then Parasite, then everything else (although you’re probably right about Int Feature being as far as Parasite climbs)
– Original screenplay is Parasite vs Marriage Story. Since BP / BD seem unlikely to split this year (how do you award BP to 1917, for example, and NOT also award Sam Mendes? Ditto OUATIH), so screenplay seems a logical “big” award for Parasite (I think OUATIH will underwhelm ito wins)
– I don’t think we’ll have another feel-good crowd pleaser without a BD nom a year after Green Book, so no Jojo
– Joker will probably win Actor, Score (another damn loss for Thomas Newman!!) & something dumb like make up.
– I really want Pesci to win supp actor, but likely he’d split too many votes with Pacino, and Supp Actor will be down to Pitt vs Hanks
So I guess I’m saying:
– The same old 4 wins we’re all expecting
– 1917 for Picture & Directing
– Parasite for International & Screenplay
– Little Women for Adapted Screenplay
– 1917 & OUATIH split most of the technicals
I can see parasite winning film editing, right now
I really hope!
Jo Jo Rabbit, JO JO on other hand i truly deeply thrilled for comedy./ musical it won the ace Eddie.
And, as part of acknowledging why it deserved the Eddie win and why i actually believe it now has a shot to defeat one hopes big time ‘parasite’ to the ace eddie i reflect in my review.
Ladies and Gentleman, this is without doubt the MOST COMPETITIVE HIGH STANDARD OSCAR CONTENDING YEAR IN MY GENERATION AND QUITE POSSIBLY IN THE LIFETIME OF THE ACADEMY
In order of my rankings for best picture graded 1-9 (i swear academy get your shit together either 8 minimum or 10 maximum no logic for 9 nominees in such high quality year for film) and grade from A+ to D as follows:
Seen- doubled my record now new personal best of 6- majority of total no. oscar nominees
1. Joker- A+ 99%
2. Ford Vs. Ferrari- A+ 97%
3. Jo Jo Rabbit– A+ 95%
4. 1917- A- 88%
5. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood- A- 88%
6. The Irishman- B- 80%
yet to see
7. Little Women- est. C- 75%
Unable to see- zero interest in rip off netflix charges (Prime amazon and Disney + superior value for money far more frequent high quality original products emerging too)
8. Marriage Story D- 65%
9. Parasite D- 55%
So as you can see highlighted in Bold, Jo Jo Rabbit is latest film i have seen. I have to say much like JOKER at a very concpetual level- with timing of what going on in real world…to present a perspective initially from the ‘bad guys’ or in lieu in case of JO JO Rabbit the most heinous psychopathic bunch of mass murderer assholes in the nazis world has ever seen..but to adapt point of view seen through eyes of fanatics (well lets face it in a way in JOKER he becomes a fanatic reluctantly but as is his fate embraces it as his journey reaches it climax by films end).
But if JOKER is the construction and evolution of a man living a lie to a man who finds his conviction to beginning of path to twisted evil in a way…JO JO is the polar opposite:
Curious kwirk i mindful that JOKER should ot be reviewed in comparison to JO JO but i have to say as nobody pointed out..that JOKER is set in era BEFORE WWII- JOJO is set AFTER THE THICK and worst of great depression era and in heart of nazi rule of A story takes place in Germany.
On that it been several decades surely! i think? since Casablanca? which incidentally won a huge amount of oscars can anyone tell me how many it won? can’t remember i think at LEAST 7. TOLD the perspective from INSIDE germany. in midst of propaganda to blindside indocrinate and make fanatics out of younger generation to join the g-d forsaken ‘hitler youth’ (note in this review i no longer quoting ‘hitler’ with capitals frankly anyone here who opposes antisemitism and it ideals should not either if they dont believe which i expect all of you post here SHOULD not believe in his sick ideologies and crimes he commited inc to my late grandparents-honestly i do not know how many other family were killed but what i do know for FACT is that like many others grandparents families who post here my gparents family from both sides were annihilated at hands of nazi sycophants).
SO against the backdrop of regrettable rising antisemitism across Europe and unfortunately some parts of the USA..shame on you if your a cowardly antisemite and have nerve and cowardice to post here pretend to be something or not or you past member that was banned cos you shared thoughts of racial hatred tied to anti semitism – directed to the very very minority who not all but some over many years who occassionally post here– go where you belong in hell.
Ok yes even a story bout Nazi Germany and particularly numerous angles past stories have been told before…always hit a raw nerve to me for if they didn’t, whether it be Casablanca- which i m,ust see again on blu ray one day with dad it been sooo long i struggle remember it shame on me, Schindler’s List- Holocaust, The Pianist- German invasion of neighbouring country i think? Poland as seen through perspective of a jewish Pianist- Saving Private Ryan- confronting the nazis in heat of battles in WWII.
But what Jo Jo does and why i accept what increasing no. are saying, that Jo Jo to me has emerged as an equal dark horse to win best picture along with Joker. Why? Cos it dares to parody and KNOWS when to parody, insult and humiliate the nazi way- while showing it..it mocks it but does NOT respect it..and knowing the point when NOT to respect and the point of threshhold where it ok to do a parody or part parody- comedy drama as Jo Jo is and succeeds incredibly well on all these levels.,.filmmaker Waititi takes on material a) understanding his history acutely regarding nazis, what they stood for and b) that not all Germans automatically conceded nazi rule some challenged them..and c) knew the parts to really rub it in and stick it to the nazi fukers- such as the (you never EVER catch me quoting these words from my own fingers or voices so bear with me) “Heil Shitler” there like my susbtitute? and then having the Fukzis, (i think i wont always call them nazis in this review why should i pay respect esp given the film doesn’t thank g-d). make a total fool of themselves by ‘;heiling’ everyone.
Having the character of ‘Shitler’ as the central characters story…being jo’ jo’s otherwise ‘immoral’ conciounce and we see as film pans out imaginary ‘shitler’ attitude change as jo’ jo’s does to his own ideology – in many ways, Jo Jo Rabbit is a coming of age story but more than that it a journey from fascination of fanatisism to dealing with and discovering the ugly regrettable truth- that Jo Jo been manipulated fed lies to which he mentally choked on the propaganda and in time he did ‘Shitler’ his conciounce thrived…and i have toi say why the devil did not actor who played his conciounce get a oscar nomination..takes courage to play ‘shitler’ and no less as a conciounce and make a totla fool of yourselves,.
I have to say i was anxious…looking around the film audience as i do out of curiosity esp last 5 years not that movie (well most movies i see not good enough steal my attention for most of run time) but,… ya know? who doesn’t steal a glance btw us movie buffs..just for 2 seconds? got to say much like JOKER, Ford vs. Ferrari it no coincidence these top 3 films in my choice put bums on seats…big time..and all these films appealed to no less than mature crowd.. With Jo Jo rated less restrictive in Oz we have R18+ , MA15+ , M15+to name a few, but the M15+ by my reckoning given importance for matrue audience i was relieved there was nobody under 20 years by my estimate..even though M15+ was for younger unfortunately in Australia..Antisemitism is a bigger problem (third worst behind Europe and PARTS of USA) and it is proven as police reports confirmed with awful vandal messages depicting swashtikas that most of these crimes people arrested in Victoria no less in my home city of Melbourne aged most of them under 20 yrs.
I have to say..one of only very few criticisms of Jo-Jo because asfter ‘Schindler’s List’ was unvelied to the world became definitive accurate most disturbing but truly powerful depiction to mainstreeam of core of nazi’s true crime against humanity, particularly the Jews in the Holocaust..that Waititi should have i think really do queried whether when released overseas – Jo Jo- could have? got a MA15+ rating simply for ‘mature and war themes’ i didn’t see detail of rating i must confess but it very minor criticism cos i was encouraged film audience KNEW when to laugh and when to take parts of movie seriously.
And THAT is clever filmmaking and RESPONSIBLE FILMMAKING. at its absolute BEST. Jo Jo Rabbit takes idea if you like of any child driven story hollywood has made over the years..and honestly it a huge disservice to the academy to not enable the actor of jo jo to gain oscar nomination to perhaps? become the youngest EVER? oscar nominated actor since Shirley Temple right? who here thinks actor of Jo Jo deserved oscar nomination i pretty sure his screen time given all events msot of them in the over 1.5 hr runtime of movie told from Jo Jo perspective.
This is a film to be laughed at..but full credit to filmmakers they NEVER lose sight of point where must be taken seriously…no more powerful instance than the raging battle and consequences those out on street when war draws to a close..Jo- Jo eventual discovery of lies he been fed as he comes to embrace rediscover his inner child is a precursor intentionally in Waititi’s and other screenwriters script to the eventual fall as fiulm illustrates to precision of inevitable gradual collapse of nazi empire. Thank- G-d that Waititi covered all aspects of the play some film makers when adapting play some not all manipulate the play for saKE of homing in on their agenda and msg.
Waititi agenda was to translate this play on big screen to make it as believable as possible..the great thing bout source play i wish to see one day after seeing this film..that a film can make me care enough to see a play like this on broadway one day well very very few comedy/ drama musicals where i not seen original play or read it online..have encouraged me to do so i bow to take my hat off to Waititi and his ultra formidable production team..particularly costumes and sets…the assembly of and literal destruction of the German village most of film set in is something to behold..he captures scale of destruction without making it too disturbing again he as dfirector and his team are in super control for their technical artistic craft.
This film is a threat for much like 3 other films in my top 4 with good reason, ‘Jo Jo Rabbit’ is very very very rare in this case, likje ‘joker’ first ever movie of it genre type, setting and purpose and style and story and concept to be nominated for best picture..
That it got 6 oscar noms esp. in most of key categories make film great- what a landmark performance by Scarlett Johansson esp i sure given as actress she may have deceased relatives or family who she reflect on eprsonally but to make light in way tribute to fictional characters ex partner and still make audiences laugh without insulting the memory and paying tribute of her ex on screen in character partner i think that ought to be the clip that played on broadcast on oscart nomination night.
It harder than people realize to let facial expressions shape the drama and build up to key moments..but the actor of ‘Jo Jo’ does it superbly through his expression we can tell his gradually changing attitude ahead of his conversations with ‘Shitler’ who could forget the end outcome of that exchange by end of movie? i dare not give it away it gold…cinematic gold.
And the other powerful aspect of thjis movie…is that it so true the few german citizens thjat resisted the propaganda like jo- jo’s mother after she lost her husband in the war who was a ‘Fukzi’. She realised the ‘pointlessness’ of it all and she loved her son her only child enough to begruydgingly accept at surface in front of her son he needed to find his own path..every now and then she gradually reveal more bout truth but only when son was ready to hear it from learning as jo-jo thankfully did on his own journey.
People need to remember in history…Yes Americans, British and European resistance ultimately won the war but when it came to storm Nazi strongholds and central base of operations particularly whern they closed in on Germany…they tapped into recruited, captured and recruited or altered civilians mentality..as towns were liberated volunteers joined their ranks to freee Germany but whole time before that there were individuals and perhaps? some parts of familieis and wives of husbands who stubbornly foolishly fought and died for incresingly vain insane cause that of Nazism and Fascism. who were just waiting just waiting to turn tide of public opinion . All it took was a push..and courage and conviction of those few German civilians in heartr of then Nazi Germany to ‘dismember’ ideology of Nazism – this was critical tool for allied forces to eventually use to destabilise the regime influence over towns allied forces would eventually invade. and liberate.
No matter how brutal regime or how many countries you control hitler’s major miscalculation in the war was that he underestimated strength of minority of the few their voice and their conviction to want German war to end and nbumber of those minority civilians never wanted war tried to preserve life as they wanted it to remian pre- war years..during the war. Allied success albeit gigantic casualties at D-Day was decisive cos over grammophones and radiograms in those days news spread quickl;y and for all nazi’s efficiency they failed to intercept forms of communication never had complete control.
Honestly, in order for Nazi’s to elminate rebels in civilian side of things, they needed to double their man power..thank g-d that never hjappened..it is said it Shitler ego and arrogance and pigheadedness that blinded him from constant threat within.. All more unforunate Johansson as Jo- Jo mother did not survive as some didn’t but for few that did get caught rebelling or hiding a Jew in the attic or basement or upstairs in the walls – as in Jo- Jo, there were 2 more of the minority who got away with hiding a Jew. Baruch Hashem one of fundamental reasons Judaism survives and is on every so painful slow recovery in restoriung the numbers of populace well..at least stabilising it after Jews faced near annihilation in WWII, is cos of courage of minority of sympathetic, independent freee minded Germans…and it them ..as well as Allied forces of course i pay my deepest gratitude any generations of those Germans directly or indirectly who KNOW their own faily history who post here i say deepest sincerest thanx- you helped to defeat Nazi Germany and liberate it! Bles you!
Yes there is obviously a personal dimension i cannot escape about Jo-Jo Rabbit…but lesson ultimately here (honestly i could go on and on and on bout hilarious instances bu honestly of great humour and comedy but realistically aren’;t most you asleep by now reading this post?:P) that this film does not display ignorance to problems with Fascism or in relfecting it presence today..on contrary by parodying ‘personality’ to put entire Nazi movement to shame while knowing when take seriously and through central character demonstrating the dawn of huminising from fanatical manipulated mislead child wannabe servant of thje fuked up ‘Reich’, to discovering all he really wanted was more than one friend and live a normal life free fropm burden of expectation.
To Sum up remember ‘Pinnochio’? ‘I just want to be a boy’- a ‘wish upon a star;’? the defining mantra and theme that dominates presentatrion and identity audio wise of Disney logo? This is the war – time ‘pinnochio’ story.–and it told as close to flawlessly as one could expect..al performances are magnificent..and frankly there should have been 2 more acting nominations..particularly actoir of ;Jo-Jo and parody ‘shitler’ conciounce.
Waititi film is indeed ‘pinnochio’ as it basically and i emphasize bare bones but heart of story…literalkly and metaphorically a journey from a stubborn naive junior fanatic to a 10 year old boy who wants friends has feelings cares for people as he wants to be cared for…he didn’t know it in first part of film cos of propagand and manipulation shitzis instilled in him. The film is without question a masterpiece and gain while i on comparison unlike ‘1917’ i aM WEARY on direct comparison this genre has NEVER been embraced before the parody-comedy- drama least of all one set in WWII about dare it say it infdlurences and waning influence as war ensured their defeat the shitzies and shitler himself..the film educates and inspires our humility and why we should value our freedoms and consequences of living in ignorance and manipulation by a higher order.
There fore it is no coincidence that JOKER at no.1 for sure to me- and Jo Jo Rabbit are indeed top 3 – for me this year..easily in the end..well just. But notable difference to mebtw 3 and 4.
These are the two films that dare challenge their own genres and either go darker (joker) or make light of (Jo Jo) serious issues both films challenge their orthodoxy and conventional wisdom based on morality and human sensibilities to inspire and give reason for film audioences to celebrate why these 2 films are truly deserved contenders and greaty films of bunch nominated this year.
I’m just curious that you keep talking about how the Academy should reward films that the audience sees and likes. You wrote a whole post about how Parasite, a film that only the “lucky few” could see, shouldn’t be in the Best Picture race. But actually, Parasite has grossed 132 million dollars to date. It’s an absolute hit with audiences. It should get more screens, I agree with you, but still it’s a massive success.
Jojo Rabbit on the other hand only grossed 35 million dollars worldwide. Therefore it’s much less seen than Parasite. Why isn’t that a problem? Why can it have a place among the Best Picture nominees, and not Parasite?
Or would you agree with me that while it’s unfortunate that some films don’t play in all corners of the world (something that annoys me a lot) their merits are not measured by box office, and therefore all great films have a rightful place in the Best Picture lineup?
Joker sucks and Parasite rules. End of story.
Jesus give it (and everyone else) a break. No one wants to read this.
But too closed to real world for u is it? Pffft
I voted this down because it’s the longest post I’ve ever seen on this forum, which is saying a lot. Nothing you could possibly be saying requires that many words.
Well your plain ignorant or just don’t give a damn bout being educated bout most important lessons of jo-jo not my problem though
You should have a blog of your own. This is disrespectful and insane.Trying to take advantage of Awardsdaily popularity to sell your strange film theories.
not quite sure what planet your on YOUR selling your own mulch i just voiciung my views oh well..think whatever you want
To be honest, you lost me after seeing Parasite-D, then a million words…
In a comment section about ’editing’. Yes, too long to read.
This all looks very good for Parasite and Jojo moving forward; not so great for The Irishman and OUATIH. But.
I still think it is an uphill battle for Parasite.
Last year, Roma was beloved and a statistical juggernaut and couldn’t win Best Picture. And that was with 2 surprise acting nods (10 overall!?). I realize that Parasite got SAG Ensemble. But unless I see Parasite win PGA or DGA, I just see AMPAS doing the usual “give it International Film, and maybe another somewhere”. But time will tell.
Precisely what it has going for it is Roma‘s loss still fresh in people’ memories. But yeah let’s see what else happens this weekend…
Roma really wasn’t a statistical juggernaut with no SAG noms and no Oscar Editing nomination. Not to mention that it was also Netflix, in addition to being foreign language.
Roma was a very vulnerable frontrunner. Not a juggernaut. Last year’s three frontrunners, Roma, The Favourite, and Green Book, were movies that couldn’t win in any other year, statistically and otherwise. Until one of them had to win.
Parasite marked the Editing nomination and is not a Netflix film, though. But I agree, specially considering it’s from a country that’s getting nominated for the first time.
It will be interesting of Parasite wins SAG Ensemble Tonight! Please god make that happen! ^^
Nope..Parasite is not best editing film of the year because and many of you who not able to see film cos it very restrictive opening- (honestly the cos it a foreign film and film studio has low budget low finance thing excuse for sympathy for a win is wearing thin at very least with me and many other increasingly so- )if a filmmaker is fair dingkom expanding it appeal while it is not expected to open to say 80% of screens of avengers Endgame surely surely for a film like ‘PArasite’ to have ANY credibility or memorability beyond the say at MOST 50% of SOME of the american states and SOME of the smaller towns in Europe and abroad , and those who got access to very LIMITED screeeners at film festivals…SURELY you think by now the Academy if they ever fukin grow up take the irrefutable fact that it the film audiences not just their sponsors that gift Hollywood the profits to pump back in investing in future films this being the bloody case..it ius inexcusable in today day and age..with extensive wealth and profits over losses Hollywood make as a whole to not further expand their financial loan system or market to foreign filmmakers a way to gain cash incentives enabling foreign filmmakers to expand their marketing to ast LEAST compete 70% of screens compared to biggest blockbusters and at least 63% of screens compared to mainstream average box office hits…
It not about money but moral obligation the Academy once respected and reflected as who wins best picture or even the Ace Eddie award- go on i DAREthe academy to blindly foolishly to deteriment of it increasingly declining- look at rapid rating deterioration at minimum stagnation every second year, decline every first year since 1998. to overlook far superior fare competing for oscar than PArasite.
You know..i have fukin Parasites in the house – — their called fruit flies- tiny little bugs- they most unwelcome guests they spoil everything spread germs and disease i had to throw out my juice cos i underestimated the fukin pests presence- now this particular film sound way way darker than JOKER and if i judging by film title i blame Hollywood and filmmakers for failing to agressively pitch through surely there some sort of Hollywood expanded incentive system to expand it screens-
way i see it if a foreign filmaker can put together a not super cheap production or more to the point– they can release film to no even if it minority of few of you and cut and edit to win an Eddie and shoot and have filmmaking equipment if they have that team which ‘parasite’ team clearly have to market for oscars than why the fuk have they failed in broader public eye to those online who not able to see ‘parasite’ in their local cinema why oh why to academy have such a tunnel vision view of broader expectations of community in hollywood and foreign filmmakers take for granted they not obligated if they compete for oscar to make film more widely accessible well..they ough to be ..maybe then i wouldn’t judge.
But Hoillywood invite the judgement and so frankly do SOME lazy filmmakers it should work other way round- earn oscar for being able to grow your public appeal. Bong i researched has done 2 previous movies i liked one i loved credit for that but considering he had bigger commercial hits globally you have to wonder why ‘PArasite’ is so so so limited and barely exists save thimbleful of traditional theatre/independent cinema.
I still think it wont win best picture…not with a field as strong, competitive and on balance far far more accessible to film going public than this excuse for best picture contender.
TS;DR
You are misinformed.
I’m so glad this looks – so far while we wait for PGA / SAG – as a 5 horse race (I am not counting off Joker)
What a great year for Oscar movies. Last year was so mediocre.
what time is PGA today?
I have no idea. I live in Europe so won’t know the results until Sunday morning
maybe for the best to wake up to results instead of bite nails. 🙂
If you wake up early (7 am in Europe) you’ll get the result live.
Well this is a great result. For the record Parasite is my favourite film of the year (and my number 1 of the year in editing – I mean that peach sequence in particular is just such a brilliantly edited sequence let alone the rest of the film that it is in) and Jojo is my second favourite film of the year so this makes me really happy. I’d love it if Parasite could just sweep the weekend – ACE/PGA/SAG would be a pretty amazing combination to win!
In terms of Oscar this has a good but not amazing record. More often than not an Eddie winner will win the editing Oscar but there are a lot of exceptions so we can’t really be sure that this means too much. Also the last comedy /musical to repeat its win was in 2003 (Chicago) so it’s much better news for Parasite than it is for Jojo (I had to double check that because I was sure from memory The Big Short won but even it didn’t). In terms of picture it isn’t that useful but it’s a nice to have – 9/20 times this century the picture winner won ACE.
I think the headline here isn’t even that Parasite and Jojo Rabbit won, it’s that The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the presumed #1 and #2 BP contenders stats-wise, lost. If they can’t pull off either PGA or SAG this weekend, I’m calling it : neither will win BP. And if 1917 or Parasite wins either PGA and / or DGA, then it’s confirmed : four-way race. Only I don’t think the ranking of the four is what we thought it was.
P.S. Also watching out for Jojo Rabbit. BIG TIME. It has massive guild love (SAG, PGA, DGA, WGA, ACE, CDG, ADG) and Oscar nominations in picture, writing, acting and editing. If this film wins either the PGA or SAG Ensemble this weekend – unlikely – then all bets are off and we may just have a 5-way race in the end.
I don’t think that’s a problem for OUATIH. Green Book lost ACE to Vice last year.
As did the five BP winners before it. (Except of course not to Vice.)
I don’t think that Jojo win with PGA or SAG is unlikely. especially SAG.
I agree that this shows that OUATIH isn’t as strong as we thought though I wouldn’t put the Irishman at #2. I think that due to prestige names, people have hard time letting go of that one as a potential Picture winner.
I would like to congratulate ACE for awarding the two best edited films of the year, Apollo 11 and Parasite. Bravo! Two true masterworks of the craft. Fingers crossed for a Parasite editing win on Oscar night.
Remarkable that in the betting markets, Jojo is fourth favorite to win editing (at 25-1) and Parasite is third favorite at 7-1.
Now can we stop with the nonsense that Irishman is winning something? It’s dead.
might still win script and supporting actor, but yeah, looks more and more likely to just take in the 10 noms and feel good about that
Script maybe, but I think Pitt in supporting actor is the safest bet we have this season.
There’s almost no way Pitt is losing but yeah script and I wouldn’t count out vfx – it usually goes to the Oscar nominees among the bunch or the most picturey film if none are picture nominees and even if the aging is imperfect it’s really new and impressive that they managed to do it.
It’s deader than Jimmy Hoffa and Once is about to follow it.
truth.
It’s a two horse race between 1917 and JoJo. But shhhh! Don’t tell the “experts”.

I wouldn’t underestimate Parasite though. ACE win, SAG Ensemble nod, Oscar nods in picture, directing, writing, editing. I’m fairly certain that combination is unprecedented for a foreign language film.
Everyone, what time can we expect PGA to drop the winners?
But there’s also the Editing and Sound categories correlation. The Departed was the last Editing winner to not have a Sound MIXING nom. Parasite also wasn’t nominated at BAFTA. The last film in at least 20 years to win Editing without a respective BAFTA nom was The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo.
So I think FvF and specially Joker could still win this in case they win BAFTA.
This is so interesting. I would do better at predicting if I delved even more deeply into the stats.
Remember last year people were convinced that Rachel Weisz was going to win because of BAFTA. And that Regina King was done without SAG and BAFTA nods. The last person to do that was Marcia Gay Harden – almost 20 years ago. Stats evolve.
Yeah, but King will still be an exception to the rule. That’s what Parasite will have to be in order to win Editing.
Exactly. Parasite will be the exception to a number of rules.
After the Oscar Noms, Jojo and Parasite seemed like possible dark horses. This is a big win for both on the first big guild night. BUT…a lot could change over the next 48 hours.
Pete Hammond does say that Parasite seems the most universally loved when he talks to Academy voters. Interesting…
I don’t think they are dark horses but legit contenders. that people still have Irishman above them is lulz.
I always thought like Parasite was 3 but within range. And I thought it could do well on a preferential.
JoJo I had in the 4-6 range, but all season, thought it could do it. I think its guild showing shows it’s very much a possibility. But I lean toward Parasite getting more 1s and 2s, but we will see.
Funny how people give credibility to Oscar experts when they say they’ve been talking to a few academy members. Imagine how those same people would react if someone told them how the electorate of a given city would vote based only on the opinion of a few of its residents.
Well, that’s often true. But to Hammond’s credit, he easily talks to hundreds of voters a year – maybe far more. He runs many of these screenings with voters, etc. He was right about Green Book last year, and many years before. So, I wouldn’t throw all analysts into the same boat.
Exactly! Right?!
Not only that, who goes to a Hollywood event and runs around asking actors to reveal what they’re doing with their ballot.
Personally, I’d be highly dubious of any voter that would take time to tell me how they planned to vote.
If I’m having a conversation with an actor, I would hope to come up with 75 things more interesting to talk about.
That’s pretty good for Parasite. Drama Eddie is by far the best predictor in this category. I think it’s probably winning this now. It also fits good for its BP chances.
Parasite is winning the Oscar for editing.
It lacks Sound Mixing nom and BAFTA Editing nom, so it’s no gonna be easy. Arrival won Drama Eddie but lost the Oscar to BAFTA winner Hacksaw Ridge.
If FvF or Joker win BAFTA, I’ll predict it for the Oscar.
..THE ACE Eddie is no longer a sure thing as it used to be stats indicators precursors to best picture are changing, as such I must say ironically thanx to preferential ballot system , Parasite almost certainly to not be frontrunner or dark horse some making it out exaggerating it to be
I think that Oscar Editing is quite open, with only Joker not standing a chance. The top two? Parasite is strong here, but Ford v Ferrari is very much in the game. They love big editing over smart editing.
Parasite is the best edited, so ACE got that right.
“Joker” will win Oscar. 🙂
Yes, for Best actor and score
My only take from this year’s and last year’s ACE: they should revise their membership and voting system. I mean, when you award bohemian and jo jo you are just lazy-voting the worst show-off there’s in town.
Last year the ‘experts’ said the ACE editors suck and lack taste for choosing BR. This year most people are praising them for picking Parasite. A little bit hypocritical if you ask me.
Well, I am not. I think they are often voting for the showy obvious option they have.
But on the other hand, neither the dramatic OR comedic winners have gone on to win Best Pic in the last six years. Meanwhile, the winner of the animated category has gone on to win the Oscar all but once since they started the category in 2010.
Six years, shmix years.
Hollywood’s editing snub was a good sign. It’s ACE loss is an even better one- it’s vulnerable for BP.
Go 1917. And if not, Parasite
Jojo Rabbit is a very overrated movie, but it did have good editing overall, so I’ll live.
And people are seriously suggesting Taiki Waititi direct the next Star Trek movie? No thanks. That would be almost as much an acid trip as Jojo Rabbit.
BAFTA really fucked up by not nominating Parasite in Editing. Wasn’t expecting too much from them anyway after giving Visual Effects to Black Panther last year.
Parasite being snubbed in this key category sure doesn’t help when people accuse them of being ‘biased’, to use an euphemism.
FvF and OUATIH have substantial reason to be mighty perturbed right about now….
Let’s wait to see what happens at PGA tomorrow and SAG Sunday, because those are bigger indicators for Best Picture.
Can’t wait for the PGA and then the SAG ensemble tomorrow and Sunday to really screw this season up!
PARASITE!!!!!!!!
Wow. I gotta be honest. As much I want Jojo to win, Parasite would certainly be my choice for BP. I’m not feeling as much for Holylwood, 1917 and Irishman, though they are all good films.
Parasite has been my choice since I saw it. Of the nominees, only Little Women has come anywhere close. I respect several of the other nominees, but these are my passion picks.
This exactly. I live in Asia and they played Parasite in theaters in June shortly after its Cannes win, and I saw it and loved it so much.
I mean I liked quite a few Cannes Palme d’Or winners in the past such as Ther Tree of Life and I, Daniel Blake in the past but Parasite is very much different in that it wows not only the artsy crowd from Cannes but also the general audience.
Reactions from my viewing were wonderful — people cheered from time to time, a married old couple sitting next to me kept talking in an excited way. And me, when I left the theater, the first thought was “Will this be an Oscar contender after Roma last year? Will they go for a foreign film again?” Fast forward a few months, and I almost can’t believe it’s one of the top contenders. This is one of the few times I discovered a real gem way before most people do.
I have a feeling that Parasite will do very well in the preferential ballot. It may not get as many #1 votes as Roma, but it will certainly got a lot of #1 votes, definitely in the top 3. And it will also get a lot of #2 #3 votes, something that Roma didn’t. If it last till the final round, it will win. I don’t see the votes from 1917 & Hollywood go to each other. And the votes from Joker/ Marriage Story/ Little Women are more likely to go to Parasite than 1917 or Hollywood or Irish Man.
The Frozen II smackdown by the Oscars’ damaging fallout is beginning here.
Knew Jojo Rabbit would win. It’s very rare for the prize to go to a film not nominated at the Oscars for editing, so Hollywood’s loss makes sense. I smell a potential Best Picture here — I wonder why so many are so dismissive of Jojo.
Not that I’m saying it will win now, but it’s victory here suggests that at least at this guild it’s better liked than Hollywood.
Many of us are dismissive of Jojo Rabbit winning Best Picture because 1. It’s a divisive movie, and that hurts you on the preferential ballot. 2. It missed the Best Director nomination at the Oscars, and the only films that have won without it are Driving Miss Daisy, Argo, and Green Book. What did they all have in common? Producer’s Guild win. If it can win there tomorrow, I will acknowledge that it can seriously win Best Picture. But I hope not since it’s actually my least favorite film of the Best Picture Oscar lineup.
Comedy Movie: JOJO RABBIT??????????????????????????????????????????
Get used to hearing it
The Good Place’s D’Arcy Carden is hosting and said this: ”No show or movie can exist without editing – except, of course, The Irishman.”
😀 😀
TV awards, comedy specifically, a joke.
Big 3 on deck.
Yes, we KNOW, any show winning any award on the comedy side at any awards show is a joke with the notable exception of The Good Place. You don’t even have to see a single episode or even just a single frame from the competition to know they are all garbage because you are THAT good. We get it. So could we just move on already ?
This is a great omen for Parasite and Jojo since both have SAG ensemble. If PGA goes for either and then SAG, well, things will get interesting.
I feel like this race is starting to get interesting. I hope PGA will surprise as well.
PGA won’t vote for producer deal of the year which is Joker. low budget CBM making money like movies of that kind costing north of 200M. If that isn’t the best producer thing I don’t know what is. First R ever to make 1B (and without China no less). First CBM ever to win Venice. Yeah. But they won’t go for it so…
CMBINO – Comic Book Movie in Name Only. I don’t consider this part of either Joker or DC canon.
but it matters how they see it cause they vote.
If Joker wins PGA on the preferential ballot, any people continuing to dismiss it as a Best Picture contender may well have egg on their face. Especially as SAG has become increasingly less relevant in the Oscar race, and Oscar nomination wise, Joker has everything it needs.
but it’s preferential ballot so something more familiar will win. just because industry supports a CBM it doesn’t mean they are going to put it at #1.
I look forward to seeing what BAFTA does in Best Film so we know what the Academy WON’T go for in Best Picture.
The Bafta curse lol. Probably 1917.
Hollyood will win PGA easily
It doesnt! ^^
Well there went FvF’s best chance at something… It may still win at BAFTA/Oscar but it just got a lot harder… Especially since it’s so clearly “#9″… While I think 1917 has the most impressive editing (for some reason ACE and the academy can’t see the difficulty in putting it together?)
PARASITE is a very good choice. It’s one film where I actually noticed the editing, in a good way, since the whole idea of good editing is NOT to notice it… If it takes it @ the Oscars than it’s BP chances shoot through the roof.
Editing 1917 to appear as one take is amazing editing. I don’t understand the lack of love except from Critics Choice which it won
I’m still keeping FvF as the frontrunner in Editing until BAFTA. If Parasite or Jojo wins there I will change. ACE Eddie +BAFTA is unbeatable imo.
I think what Parasite may have over its competition is that it has a solid shot at winning all 6 of its categories.
That’d be cool yet unlikely.
Maybe not Art Direction but in the other 5 categories (Picture, Foreign Language Film, Director, Original Screenplay, Editing) I think it is a top2 contender.
At least it’s AD is pretty damn cool. If it were to win It wouldn’t be your average “because pretty things” choice they sometimes go for.
That’s a very good point. I didn’t think about that logistically; that Parasite could be 1 or 2 in most of its races.
If both the Academy and ACE thought Jojo Rabbit has better editing than Hollywood, I wonder if Hollywood might be weaker overall than we think. It might just lose all the guilds.
I agree. I am very dispirited. This is the beginning of the end for yet another of my favorite movies, and I am immeasurably less interested in the race as a result.
You’re just waking up to this now??? You’ve been sold a bill of goods by the critics and pundits. The industry is totally indifferent to both Hollywood and Irishman. Just watch the last 15 minutes of Hollywood again and ask yourself, is this an “Oscar” type film? Hell no. It’s fanboy garbage.
I haven’t been sold on it earlier, but it just kept getting in again and again and again. Its first miss was Cinematography at the BAFTAs, but that’s statistically more or less irrelevant. The Editing miss at the Oscars was only its first really relevant miss. Wasn’t that easy to call earlier.
First rule of picking Oscar winners:
1) Never listen to the pundits. They’re pseudo-hipsters completely out of touch with Oscar voters. They’re still waiting for that Social Network/Boyhood/Roma train to come in.
Win that PGA tonight and Best Cast at SAG tomorrow, and then Jojo Rabbit will be a serious contender for Best Picture. But until then, it has no chance.
Jojo won a key precursor. Watch out. If it wins SAG or DGA..
“Jojo” had to win this: it was the only ‘comedy film’ nominated for ACE that is also nominated for Oscar for editing. So nothing surprising here and it still has no chance to win the Academy Award. BAFTA will probably reward “Ford v Ferrari” (they LOVE car movies in this category: in the last 10 years they rewarded “Senna”, “Mad Max”, “Rush” and “Baby Driver”). But can “Ford v Ferrari” win an Oscar for editing without any other Oscars? It’s pretty rare: after “Bullitt” (1968) only “The GIrl with the Dragon Tattoo” won this Oscar and NOTHING ELSE. So I guess that “Ford v Ferrari” needs sound mixing or sound editing but can it beat “1917” there?
Therefore I thing that ‘editing’ will go to “Parasite”, “The Irishman” or “Joker”.
“Joker” is in the best situation, to be honest: in the last 12 years all ‘editing winners’ were also nominated for ‘sound mixing’ (“Parasite” and “The Irishman” aren’t nominated there). And if “Joker” wins here it won’t be its only Oscar (so this is no “Ford v Ferrari” situation).
It defeated the frontrunner in comedy which adds up to the feeling that Jojo may have more support than expected
The frontrunner in comedy was “Jojo Rabbit”. After the Oscar nominations were announced we knew that. If editing branch did not nominate “Hollywood” than the editors liked “Jojo Rabbit” more and now we have the confirmation. But that’s all. It doesn’t mean that “Jojo Rabbit” has broad support which will be big enough to win the main Oscar.
The frontrunner for comedy to win the Oscar is Hollywood and needed that Eddie badly
DGA? Don’t you mean PGA? Because it has zero chance of winning DGA.
I am not convinced of that. I still say Mendes for DGA, but… I would never bet against Waititi. Specially considering Hollywood plans for him
Yeah but the love for him could easily go to Writing. And I know Ben Affleck won the DGA without a Director nomination at the Oscars, but Affleck had been winning everything up ’til that point and Watiti has not. So I feel, even though I’m currently predicting Zaillian for Irishman, if Jojo wins anything it’s best chance is Adapted Screenplay.
Bong ftw
Parasite is the first foreign-language film to win Best Edited Dramatic Feature at the ACE Eddies. Looking forward to hearing “first foreign-language film to win…” a few more times in the coming weeks.
Heavens, no.
You’ll survive it.
Very interesting…
Thank you, American Cinema Editors. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Jeebus H. Christmas…
And here we go, JoJo!
