Off-topic: mixed to positive reviews for the new Charlie Kaufman: https://www.metacritic.com/movie/im-thinking-of-ending-things
Random question – you seem to be one of the more “in tune to how things work” people around here – any idea how metacritic scores are actually calculated? Because I often see the score and feel like it seems low compared to the individual scores so I’ve calculated average scores a few times and they always seem to be higher than the one described at the top of the page. In this case the average score on metacritic is between 78 and 79 but the score displayed at the top is 75 – not a big difference but enough to puzzle me.
Regardless… It looks like a Charlie Kaufman film – those who love it really love it but those who don’t really don’t.
According to the site’s FAQ, it’s a weighted average where “more reputable” sites are given a larger weight and they normalize the results. More information: https://www.metacritic.com/about-metascores
Give Kate her second and Ronan her first Oscar for this. Let Ronan break Kate s record in Oscar nominations for this one. Go girls ❤️❤️
Will Ronan go Lead or Supporting for this?
I think supporting, Winslet seems to be the lead.
Looks dull, unoriginal and uninteresting.
A rip off of better films like Carol, Portrait of A Lady On Fire and CMBYN.
I’m seeing lots of mixed reactions online about the trailer.
I don’t think it will go far awards season wise, there probably won’t even be traction for a nomination for Ronan, maybe for Winslet.
Overall i don’t think awards voters will connect with it, or will be passionate about it.
Did you just upvote your own comment while downvoting every comment that had the nerve not to share your subjective take on this 2min trailer ? Thanks, Barverat, you just told me everything I needed to know about you in the AD context.
This looks marvelous. Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan are each the best of their respective generations. Having them paired together in such an intimate looking film is very promising. I can’t wait.
Can both ladies secure their Oscar wins already? They look both as incredible as one would expect any of them would be in any film and their chemistry on screen looks absolutely terrific. Love the Portrait Of A Lady On Fire vibes this trailer brings me. And God’s Own Country was such a fantastic film.
Not only do these performances look great but it also feels like time for both of them. Obviously we always talk about how Saoirse is so overdue but also I feel like Winslet is starting to feel overdue for a second too! If you look so the list of living women with 2 – Blanchett, McDormand, Fonda, Lange, Foster, Smith, Zellweger, Jackson, Field, Wiest and Swank – she really feels like she should be a part of it!
Though I do tend to prefer to award the best performance rather than who is due so what I’m really saying is that I hope these performances are as good as the trailer makes them look!
Interesting to hear a take about Winslet being overdue for a second Oscar. I’ve always felt the exact opposite, that her career has really stopped moving after her Oscar win. Her large projects after that are Steve Jobs, Contagion, Carnage, the Divergent movies, Collateral Beauty, Triple 9, The Dressmaker, The Mountain Between Us, Wonder Wheel, Labor Day, A Little Chaos and Blackbird. I feel like only the first two of those are movies that people have seen or thought she was particularly good in
Yeah she has had some bad roles recently I do agree with that but I do find her really underappreciated in Steve Jobs and more importantly I feel like most talented actors /actresses go through a difficult stage where they make a bunch of mistakes as their career matures. I think she has been going through this and is due to come out the other side and get her second win… Zellweger just went through the same thing to win her second (though hopefully Ammonite is better than Judy).
I thought The Dressmaker was classic Aussie cinema in the best sense. It’s one of my favorite performances of hers and reminds me of her work post-Titanic in the late 90’s early 2000’s. I also think Wonder Wheel is very underrated and her work was worthy of a nomination that year. Carnage and Contagion I liked too. But in my opinion she was robbed of her second oscar for Steve Jobs. She was marvelous in that film.
I agree with most of that (though I didn’t like Wonder Wall much) but the point that she has made some bad films recently is definitely fair… However, I don’t think that excludes how brilliant she is or stops her from being overdue. I also love the dressmaker and she is a really large part of why it works so well!
I didn’t mean to express that I personally thought that those films were particularly bad (I for example haven’t seen The Dressmaker) but that the general consensus didn’t seem that excited about that film and I doubt many even watched the film.
I must disagree about Wonder Wheel, though. When I was getting into film, I somehow just binged a lot of Woody Allen movies and as a result I’ve seen almost 40 of them, and somehow still Wonder Wheel managed to be for me the absolute lowpoint of his career. It’s a genuine disaster and Winslet is lost in a character and movie that fails to give her anything consistent
You’re certainly not alone in your views on Wonder Wheel which was an absolute flop. I liked everything about it except for Justin Timberlake, and one particular scene which I thought was very bad.
But The Dressmaker actually did quite well with critics and audiences. It wasn’t a smash hit, but it swept the Australian oscars and was their highest grossing export that year, if I recall. Anyway, it is true that it wasn’t a crossover hit, but it was moderately successful in a number of markets. I highly recommend it. It’s my 2nd favorite film of hers post “Little Children”. My favorite post-L.C. is Steve Jobs.
But you are right in that her films lately haven’t panned out quite as well as her earlier films. That being said, her career overall is astonishing (1994-2008 films most notably for sure) and quite hard to keep going for so long without a bit of a dip. Hopefully AMMONITE is a success. She is compelling even in her mediocre films (The Mountain Between Us was dull except for Kate’s work, she was very good actually in the quieter moments in particular)
Ronan can finally win for this! So exciting!!
