Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland has won the Golden Lion in Venice. Since 2000 four films have gone on to get a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars. And in the last three years all have. The Shape of Water also won Best Picture, along with Best Director. Roma won Best Director. Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere won back in 2010, the rare film by a female director to win it.
Last year’s winner, Joker, caused a bit of an upset among Film Twitter but it launched the film into the Best Picture race.

First of all, amazing that the Venice Film Festival actually took place – there is hope, cinephiles!!
Second, happy for all winners, especially for Pierfrancesco Favino, who was really great in “Il Traditore” – a film I just saw a couple of weeks ago.
Just watched it through TIFF at home. Beautiful film. Hopefully Zhao will be nominated for director. Similar style as The Rider which I loved. Don’t think McDormand will win but nomination for sure.
Nomadland starts with 98 on Metacritic with 13 reviews.
One Night in Miami is at 82.
Ammonite is at 78.
They inflated the score for Ammonite!!
They are pretty desperate!
They counted the EW review (91) twice!! so it’s 12 reviews overall, not 13.
This is insane, someone should tell whoever runs Metacritic to repair the mistake!!
I call locks on nominations for picture and lead actress. Twitter will explode if Chloe Zhao doesn’t get in for director.
It’s Fincher vs Zhao.
I’m really happy for Nomadland and Vanessa Kirby.
