We’ve been waiting a while for this one, well those of us who hadn’t seen it when it played on screens. Either which way, here it is. Looks like a cross between Punch Drunk Love and Boogie Nights.

Sasha Stone has been around the Oscar scene since 1999. Almost everything on this website is her fault.

I think this looks cool. I loved Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood. I hope I can watch Cooper Hoffman without thinking melancholically of his dad. That Sunday afternoon news still hurts. Remember when Sasha started her first podcast after his death with Goodbye, Stranger.
Looks super-meh
Great trailer, Bradley cooper could get a nomination here for best supporting actor
I love PTA. He’s overdue as hell. He should have won BP for Magnolia.
I think I’ll love this.
But this is NOT his Oscar moment.
At least on the surface, it looks like a film version of The Wonder Years, with Alana Haim as Winnie Cooper and Cooper Hoffman as Kevin Arnold. Interesting…
This doesn’t look like the type of movie I typically enjoy but, I’m sure it will be a quality film. PTA knows what he’s doing.
Seems they a marketing this more to a YA audience than to a ” high quality” “movie awards ” one.
I love the “minor” relationship movies by PTA, Punch Drunk Love and The Phantom thread and this seems another one.
Got strong “Almost Famous” and “Dazed and Confused” vibes… so I don’t know what to think about it.
But it doesn’t really look “Oscary” or “Oscarbait” to me… however, I could see Cooper winning Supporting, for this one, it looks like a showy role.
It looks reeeally good to me. Obviously marketed in a certain way for wider appeal, and whether it impacts the Oscars remains to be seen, but looks like another PTA banger to me. Between that, Macbeth, Bond, the new Ridleys, I’m just absolutely set for coming months, can’t complain.
It looks very generic. Hope that’s just the trailer and the actual movie is great
This looks pretty good, although not sure it will be an Oscar thing.
Looks like Once Upon A Time In Hollywood meets Dazed and Confused meets Inherent Vice meets Almost Famous meets Punch-Drunk Love. Great!!
My only issue is Bradley Cooper who looks already so bland.
Why Hollywood keeps casting him in high profile roles with great auteurs is beyond me.
I don’t dislike Bradley, however, he is starting to come off as desperate for an Oscar.
Picture, Director, Writer nod. Win for Cinematography.
Much like Phantom Thread, there doesn’t appear to be a Director of Photography, so it’s a team effort with PTA essentially shooting it. I think that will preclude a cinematography nomination.
I declare it the Best Film of the Decade and the Best Picture frontrunner.
Check out Cooper Hoffman in this film and Philip Seymour Hoffman in “Scent of a Woman” https://i.pinimg.com/originals/4f/90/03/4f900346b1339adea554fcfdb4884845.jpg
I am getting Almost Famous feelings from this, which I LOVE…however not sure if this will be up Oscar ally but could be a major surprise because they do love PTA.
Reminds me on Linklater´s “Everybody wants some”. Not necessarily “important” enough for Oscar glory, but will probably be pretty entertaining.
It also looks like the kind of movie that could very much have benefitted from a festival run to build buzz and critical acclaim (I’m thinking of Lady Bird as another movie about teens), a late release often implies the kind of movie that can will itself to become an Oscar contender in a vacuum, and I’m not sure if this will work like that. But ignoring Oscar chances, I think it seems extremely promising.
It’s going to be a tough road for the actors, with some many powerhouse veterans in contention. But I could see screenplay, direction, Picture nominations. Because in those categories it’s PTA who’s the veteran. And I think there’s a growing eagerness to see him on stage.
If the movie gets those nominations, I could easily see Cooper getting nominated because he seems to be giving a really big performance. Actually, since I don’t really think there’s a frontrunner in best supporting actor, a well-liked actor who has four nominations and hasn’t won yet giving a big supporting performance in a best picture nominee could very easily win in that category. But like I said, I have some doubts about whether the Academy will embrace the movie enough to get to the point where that discussion would be had
I guess it lacks the aura of PTA´s ambitious high profile projects like “The Master”, “There will be blood” or “Phantom Thread” but looks more like a small personal, more lightweight film like “Punch Drunk Love” that is not meant to please critics or the Academy. In this regard I´m not sure if a festival run would have catapulted “Licorice Pizza” into the Oscar race – it doesn´t look like that kind of film. But of course, I´m just spectaculating. It looks promising though, I agree.
I tend t0 agree . Th0se three films are masterpieces . Stills l00ks g00d th0ugh !
Alana Haim looks like the standout here. Could she have a shot for a Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress nomination?
Is this a story about high-schooler in love with older girl/young woman? Looks cute.
I get the sense that both leads (Haim, Hoffman) are in high school, but maybe Haim is 2 or 3 years ahead.
Looks minor. Hard Eight Pass.
Meh. Doesn’t look like my thing at all but I guess I’ll have to watch it.
